Pros: Blade Sharpness, Ease of Opening, Overall Quality, Lock Type, Weight, Blade Material, None
Cons: Handle Material, Lock Ease of Use
A very capable tool.
This is a knife that has a substantial heft which gives the impression of sturdiness however, from previous experience with aluminum handled knives I know it will soon show dings and scratches from heavy use. The blade is very sharp, with a highly polished edge which allows it to cut very easily and cleanly. 154CM is one of my favorite blade steels, so I expect it to perform very well. I have mixed thoughts about the stonewashed finish on the blade. I prefer to see the finish grind lines of an unpolished knife. The uniformity of the grind tells me something about the quality of manufacture. This knife is easy to open even with heavy gloves. Having said this, I think the sliding safety feature for the blade closing button is not necessary and have found it an inconvenience to closing the knife. The slider seems to move forward while the knife is in use, even if you didn't intend to employ it, which then requires an extra motion to disengage before the lock button can be pushed. The positive action of the button lock on the opened blade doesn't appear to require a safety. My overall impression is that this is a very well thought out and well made knife that is every bit as good as any of the higher tier knives in my collection. I am impressed enough to consider the purchase of another knife from Hogue.
