1095 Carbon Steel
1095 Carbon Steel
An excellent hard use steel, 1095 is a primary choice for camping and larger fixed blade knives for its extreme toughness and ability to hold an edge. Corrosion resistance is very limited with this steel (it will rust) and most blades come with a coating to prevent premature rusting.
Nylon Sheath

Too Nice
This was a gift, and my experienced deer hunting friend says the Rat 5 is too nice to use, almost. He loves it, pointing out all the little extras the knife and sheath offer. With big hands, the Rat 5 is his kind of knife. Having bought 9 Ontario products for gifts and for myself, I can say that I do not regret purchasing any of them.

Pros: Sheath/Scabbard, Materials, Handle Material, Weight, Blade Sharpness, Blade Material, None
Cons: Finish
The handles were not "finished", to a high grade of fit for the price. The blade, is excellent, holds great edge, and once coating was removed at groove, it showers sparks, with feral rod! Case was good. Would like to have option for good quality leather case of same type of design. Would like option of hammer butt also instead of the glass /skull, cracker... Over all, a good knife, but I spent over an hour with files and sand paper to get handle fit well, expected it to be more fitted. Ontario Knife is slacking in handle dept. I carried an okc, Kabar, while I was in the Marines. It was a Great knife! It broke my heart to turn it back in to supply, when I got out. Granada-Beruit Era Marine. Semper Fi...

Very pleased
I borrowed this knife on a weekend and oh boy it was good, i was batoning wood every day with it and it held an edge very well and the blade didn't wiggle anything at all. The coating is good because it keeps the blade from rusting but the coating will of course wear off eventually but i suppose all coatings do that. Sheath is also better than the sheath from an older RAT-7 i own so thumbs up for that. Ain't much else to tell since i only had it for 3 days.
