Feedback from a SERE instructor after testing a production model of the ESEE-5 (taken from ESEE Knives's website):

Just got back and I am impressed. The knife is everything that we're looking for. Tough, durable, practical, affordable, and useful. I can't tell you how many fires that I started with the help of the ESEE-5 and it was a great trip to try out a knife. The weather was unseasonably cold, mostly in the teens but sometimes in the negatives. My friend and I were starting a fire for some cold students and he was bashing his (manufacturer's name removed) through some sections of a downed tree it broke right at the handle, like most bolt knives and (manufacturer's name removed) seem to do. I don't know if it was the cold weather, the perfect angle, or something else but it was a brand new (manufacturer's name removed) and it broke right in half. At the same time I was beating the daylights out of the ESEE-5 hoping to bend, break, or at the very least damage the paint job. I failed to do any of these things and my friend became more and more interested in the ESEE-5 as I found more and more things that I like about it. I'll get some pictures and a few videos this next trip and send them to you ASAP. Thanks again for the great knife!

("Bolt" Knives are knives built with reduced tangs to accommodate handles. Usually these knives have a pommel cap that is threaded or riveted in place. These reduced tang knives will not accept a lot of prying. Examples of this are standard issue pilot's survival knives.)

Note: Our knives are made from high carbon 1095 steel. And while 1095 is a top choice for professional cutlery designed for hard use, it will rust and stain if not properly cared for - especially on the cutting edge and around the laser engraving. It is the user's responsibility to keep the blades properly lubricated and cleaned. We suggest using a dry film rust inhibitor.

1095 Carbon Steel
1095 Carbon Steel
An excellent hard use steel, 1095 is a primary choice for camping and larger fixed blade knives for its extreme toughness and ability to hold an edge. Corrosion resistance is very limited with this steel (it will rust) and most blades come with a coating to prevent premature rusting.
Kydex Sheath
Kydex Sheath
Waterproof, scratch resistant, and low friction. It will hold its shape and makes a great alternative to leather.
Micarta Handles
Micarta Handles
Micarta is a compressed layered composite sealed within a thermosetting plastic which creates a strong, attractive material that is impervious to water.

What a beast of a knife
Have done a lot of Batoning with this knife and the finish has held up extremely well . The sheath is excellent and works well as I am left-handed and can be turned into a left-handed Carry I ordered this knife on a Sunday night and it was at my doorstep on Wednesday morning once again the Knife Center comes through with flying colors !

Pros: Sheath/Scabbard, Materials, Overall Quality, Weight, Finish, Blade Material, Blade Sharpness
Cons: None
This knife is definitely a TANK. Wicked sharp, the combo edge is amazing and the knife has a good heft. I'm not sure its possible to break this knife under normal use. Kydex sheath is very nice and provides a secure lock-up and has a nice retention screw that makes drawing the knife out extremely difficult (like a child safety) when fully engaged. Again, I wanna stress that this knife is hefty. I just wish the blade was a bit longer to go along with the weight, but all in all, I LOVE this knife. Very satisfied!

Cons: Weight
A very solid knife - rock solid
If you are looking for a small knife that won't add much weight to your gear, this is NOT what you want. This is a solid chunk of steel clearly made to handle business and endure punishment. Due to the high carbon steel content it is supposedly very susceptible to rust. I coated mine with Tuf-Glide and so far have noted no signs of corrosion after a few weeks on my kit. The scales are a little quirky coming on and off and I would not recommend removing them frequently. Supposedly the screws can be easy to strip by over tightening and I could see how that might happen but they could easily be replaced if you did this. A lot of reviews I read recommended not removing the scales for cleaning and just letting the scales air dry after cleaning with really hot water. The hot knife will supposedly dry the micarta scales pretty quickly.
