Lacks against the USA original
In ways I'm glad I bought the new Schrade/Old Timer 44OT Workmate by Taylor Cutlery and in ways...not so much. Plus Sides: -The original 44OT Workmate was made from 1990-1993 so it is nice to see Taylor Cutlery bringing back the Schrade designs that didn't stay around long...oldies but goodies. -The Workmate made both a great pocket knife and woodcarving knife. It's not everything under the sun for a carver but it combines both a congress and stockman knife concept. Now the downsides: -I don't like the steel one bit and that's not only because it's not 1095 Carbon Steel like the American model was, I can live with stainless...but it's not even as good as Schrade USA's Plus Steel. This isn't a 420/440 Series stainless it's a Chinese comparative stainless steel called 7Cr1t7.It holds a fair edge but it doesn't sharpen up that well, it's hard and not soft like an American stainless. To me it's junk steel and reminds of a Frost knife-cheap and cuts but it's low quality steel...flea market knives. In my opinion it's a slap in the face putting it on a Schrade product.1095 though had very high edge life and sharpened up really nice and was Old Timer's signature steel. -The handle material is black and tan not dark and light brown like the USA originals...kind of tacky looking. The scales are hacksaw grooved but I'm not so sure it's delrin because it doesn't feel dense and more like a basic plastic.Delrin is a plastic too but it's a very hard material and feels solid...this material doesn't. In function yeah it's a 44OT Workmate and you'll get a piece of what made it a good knife. But Taylor Cutlery still can't replicate the Schrade USA formula and there's things about it to explain why you're paying less.

Pros: Blade Material, Blade Sharpness, Ease of Opening, Weight, Handle Material
Cons: None
I was very impressed with this knife. Previous "new" Schrade products I've seen have not been very good, but this little knife was quite decent. Quality of the blades was good, general workmanship was good. The only cosmetic flaw was one of the rivets was was slightly long on the face of the knife. But, overall, a good little "carry-and-use" knife. for the price.
