AUS-8 Stainless Steel
AUS-8 Stainless Steel
A very widely used EDC steel, AUS-8 can take a very nice edge while also maintaining moderate edge holding and corrosion resistance properties.

Leather Sheath
Leather is known for its durability and traditional appeal. When compared to Kydex it is preferred for its silence when bumped against other objects, as well as blade retention.

Pros: Blade Material, Handle Material, Weight, Overall Quality, None
Cons: Sheath/Scabbard, Blade Sharpness
Great Value and Practical Performer
This is a great design and a wonderful users knife. It's among the best choices in the price range for a general outdoor hunting and camping knife. It is more than enough blade for any North American game and you can actual carry it and control it. Grippy handles even in the muck, a flat ground blade, which is hard to come by, and a quality stainless steel. Its also fairly thin and wide, so you can use it for food prep when camping. Just a great all around practical design and build. There are better knives out there with better steels and fancier ones too, but for the money and for camping and hunting purposes this is just a great knife. Sheath is pretty much crap.

SOG NW Ranger
Bought this because of plenty of good reviews but the sheath I got was crap, I have to force it in the sheath to hold and the snap will not wrap around the handle so worthless. Knife quality and finish is like cheap mass produced items poor, the guard was sharp with burrs not centered with handle and knife very cheap looking. I have not abused this one like most knives because of it's weight more of a hiking knife for me. Came sharp like most SOGs I have seems like it would be somewhat durable time will tell. Overall not to happy though.

Maybe SOG's BEST!!
I only own a couple SOG fixed blades, and 2 folders. But by FAR i prefer the NW Ranger over their Seal line of knives.Imo i think overall this maybe SOG's BEST fixed blade. The balance is superb.Just about perfect size for a Hunting/Fishing knife.Nice grip. The Aus8 seems to be of good quality. If Aus8 has a proper HT it CAN be a good quality steel. The sheath is basic at best.I wish more knife mfg's put more thought and effort into their sheaths as well. But don't let the sheath discourage you from buying the NW Ranger. It will become one of your Favorite fixed blades. One would have a HARD time finding a better overall Production fixed blade knife for under $100.The only con barring the sheath,is it's made in Taiwan. That's it.Great Knife,Great Price.
