This knife won the Blade magazine Imported Knife of the Year for 2011!
Butch Vallotton like most knifemakers started making knives as a hobby, had to start selling knives to pay for his hobby and before he was aware of it became a professional full time knifemaker in 1984 with a waiting list of customers at the age of thirty. A self-proclaimed gadget freak, a good part of his business comes from automatic knives and he is credited with inventing the ambidextrous blade thumb stud. His collaboration with Spyderco called the Vallotton Sub Hilt Folder features an ambidextrous thumb stud that both opens the blade (in addition to the Spyderco Round Hole) and doubles as a stop pin keeping the blade from rotating open beyond the locked position. A long time fan of Italian-style, heavy-stock folders the Sub-Hilt bears an international flavor with a modified coffin-shaped handle of polished black G-10 with tongue-and-groove tted stainless bolsters. Further complementing the handle is a Michael Walker LinerLock® a four-way: tip-up/tip-down, right- or left-handed steel clip and screw-together scale construction. Crucible Steel Inc. of New York produces the CPM-S30V powdered steel used for the modified Tanto-shaped blade. The blade is hollow-ground at the cutting edge with a convex-grind at the tip and is offered PlainEdged for the best available cutting performance.

Cons: None
Well done Spyderco!
Took a gamble on this knife for I had never seen one in person. I was not disappointed when it arrived. A lot thicker and heavier than expected but I did not buy this for EDC. I bought this just to build my Spyderco collection but this is a great choice for any collection. The quality is amazing. Great detail throughout the entire knife. Nice hollow ground and convex grind blade in CPM-S30V steel. Beautiful polished G-10 scales with stainless bolsters to add a nice touch. The grip is a little too smooth for tactical use but that's not what this was designed for. If I could change anything about it, I would eliminate all the holes for multiple pocket clip locations. To me, it takes away from the beauty of the handles. If you do not want a large blade, heavy, thick knife, then this might not be for you but if you are really into Spyderco knives and are looking for an amazingly well built quality show piece for collector's purposes, this is a huge win! Highly recommend.

A fantastic (though not practical) knife!
If you are a collector, you owe it to yourself to get this knife! The level of quality is amazing. The knife is very solid, well-made, you're getting lots of hardware for your buck. The handle feels awesome, very comfortable, and looks great too! The locking mechanism looks rock-solid, must more reliable than some other liner locks I've seen. The clip is repositionable in 4 different locations, but I removed it, because it makes a large knife even larger. Also, the knife is quite heavy, so maybe not for EDC use. Anyways, an absolutely awesome knife, highly recommended!
