  • 154CM: An American made premium grade stainless steel originally developed for tough industrial applications. Known for its best all-around qualities, it offers great corrosion resistance with good toughness and edge quality.
  • AXIS® A patented Benchmade exclusive, AXIS has been turning heads and winning fans ever since its introduction. A 100-percent ambidextrous design, AXIS gets its function from a small, hardened steel bar which rides forward and back in a slot machined into both steel liners. The bar extends to both sides of the knife, spanning the liners and positioned over the rear of the blade. It engages a ramped, tang portion of the knife blade when it is opened. Two omega style springs, one on each liner, give the locking bar it's inertia to engage the knife tang, and as a result the tang is wedged solidly between a sizable stop pin and the AXIS bar itself.

GREAT KNIFE!
Exceeded my expectations! Just wish this model came with a deep carry pocket clip, but not a big deal. My favorite carry EDC now! For the price point, I highly recommend snagging a Benchmade Griptilian! Big fan of the thumb hole versus the thumb studs for deployment. I have a mini griptilian with the thumb studs and definitely prefer the thumb hole design in the 550. The Griptilian 550 is A+++++ !

Griptilian, very popular for a reason!
This is a very popular knife for good reason. This chubby handle fits my paw like it was designed for me. Very comfortable. The grip texture is a perfect. It provides a good grip in my hand but still slides out of my pocket without difficulty. After a little use the knife opening and closing is incredibly smooth. The axis lock is my preference. I don't know much about steel but it came sharp and has continued to retain an edge. I don't use it as a screwdriver or prybar. I own a number of Benchmade knives. This is a favorite. There is nothing fancy about the Griptilian, and that appeals to me. I can't think of anything to gripe about. I doubt you will regret the purchase of a griptilian.
