Description
CR2745: Birler Pack Axe
CRKT

Forged to keep you from being SOL in a FOB. The Birler compact pack axe is light enough to cut down on weight, yet it's still burly enough to get everything you need done on a mission.

Elmer Roush of Brasstown, North Carolina knows a thing or two about axes and life in the battle theater. He spent time in country, in the Vietnam conflict. Today, in the Forged By War program, he's applying his 40 years of blacksmith experience as well as techniques from thousands of years ago to create exceptional tools such as the Birler.

This is an axe that won't go AWOL on you when you need to break down doors, build floors and take down tall trees to rescue a fellow soldier. The blade is forged from 1055 carbon steel and is virtually indestructible. Just like those who use it. The sturdy Tennessee hickory handle ensures that the Birler won't fold on you when the fighting gets tough. The name even relates the tool back to the wooden handle and the art of Birling, being a reference to lumberjacks log rolling. This is one tough tool for a mission or the outdoors.

Looking at the Birler you'd be amazed that it's such a heavyweight when it comes to work, yet such a lightweight when it comes to carrying it into battle with the elements.

If you're fighting to reduce every ounce as you head out into the field, carry the Birler in your hand.

About the Forged By War program

In 2013, Ryan Johnson of RMJ Tactical, designer of elite, military, tactical tomahawks, approached CRKT with the news that he had been working with a few combat veterans that had returned from war with varying degrees of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

To help work through their challenges, they have been designing and forging steel into custom tools. Drawing from their experience earned in combat situations, they have been creating tools they wished they had available to them on the battlefield.

CRKT cares deeply about our returning veterans and they saw a way to give back to the community that created them. In 2016, they launched the Forged By War program.

These are mission ready tools, designed by veterans, with 10% of the CRKT net profits of the program donated to the veterans' charity of choice.

Nice little axe
First I want to say that the handle FINISH isn't very good. The piece of hickory my handle is made of is VERY NICE. Secondly, the edge could've been sharper. I put about 2 hours into sanding, refinishing, and sharpening this axe (It's not really a hatchet, more like a baby axe) and love how it turned out. If you are too much of a puss to do some work on your tools and expect a perfect finished product; I wouldn't advise this axe. If you like to put a little work into tools and give them a personal touch; I think this is a fantastic option.

Nice Axe
I found this axe to be a useful tool and just the right size. It's reasonably sharp from CRKT and holds an edge quite well. I like the curvature of the handle and the shape of the axe head for close work. The rought finish makes for good grip, especially with gloves. Only thing keeping it from 5 stars is the lack of a sheath.

What I was looking for
As the previous reviewer mentioned, the CRKT Birler Camp Axe was not sharp. However, it is a quality piece. It makes for a great survival / Camp axe. In my opinion it is worth the purchase. If it had come sharp I would have given it 5 stars. Also, the handle is a bit thin and takes some getting used to. For those of you with larger hands be prepared to wrap the handle with some sort of grip tape or paracord to fill out your hand. The light weightedness and head design were key features in my purchasing this product. I have yet to split with it but I believe the head design will be much better for splitting than a lot of other hatchets and tomahawks on the market.
