BM5551: 555-1 CPM-20CV/G10 Sheepsfoot Mini Griptilian
Benchmade

A Benchmade classic upgraded with G10 handles and premium steel.

The Griptilian is born of custom knifemaker Mel Pardue's passion for functional designs. You release the creature's ferocity with a thumb stud. At the very heart of the Griptilian, is the exclusive AXIS locking mechanism. This modern marvel gives life to a cutting tool like you have never experienced before, especially in a lightweight folder. Rock-solid ambidextrous function is sure to tame the most die-hard of traditionalists. And you can grab onto the lightweight, handle with its grip-textured surface and rib covered spine that grabs you right back for a "can't let go" grip. This model comes with gray G10 handle scales, blue G10 accents, blue barrel spacers and a reversible deep carry pocket clip for right or left side carry. The blade steel has also been upgraded on this model to CPM-20CV stainless steel. CPM-20CV is virtually identical in chemical composition to Benchmade's current M390 steel but is made in the US by Niagara as opposed to Bohler which is based Austria. It offers better edge retention but is not quite as tough to resharpen as M390.

  • AXIS A patented Benchmade exclusive, AXIS has been turning heads and winning fans ever since its introduction. A 100-percent ambidextrous design, AXIS gets its function from a small, hardened steel bar which rides forward and back in a slot machined into both steel liners. The bar extends to both sides of the knife, spanning the liners and positioned over the rear of the blade. It engages a ramped, tang portion of the knife blade when it is opened. Two omega style springs, one on each liner, give the locking bar it's inertia to engage the knife tang, and as a result the tang is wedged solidly between a sizable stop pin and the AXIS bar itself.

Pros: Blade Sharpness, Handle Material, Handle Feel, Blade Material
Cons: Pocket Clip, None
Awesome knife
The extra money compared to the original mini griptilian gets you g10 grips and a much better steel. The steel is a little harder to sharpen, but any diamond stones will do. The G10 grips don't have as pronounced of a checkering pattern, but they still grip just as well, if not better than the original material. The pocket clip is now a deep carry clip, but overall is still just a painted metal, which will show signs of wear (this is the only part of the knife that will show wear) If that bothers you, contact benchmade and they will ship you free clips. The only con I have about the knife is that the screws going through the grips are not recessed. you wont notice them when the knife is in you hand, but you slightly feel the if you run your fingers over the grip. The CPM 20CV steel is well worth the extra money. I love to have a razor sharp knife all the time, and this knife will keep it's edge better than the 154 or the D2 that the mini grip usually comes in. The other steels will keep an edge, but I sometimes don't have the time to touch up my knife on a weekly or biweekly basis. Also, this steel won't rust under normal use. I always use a knife to cut fruit while I'm at work, and I never have to worry about wiping it down completely before it's back in my pocket. A quick rinse of the blade will do. The only other difference between this and the original mini grip is the barrel spacers on the back of the knife. Some people don't like the open back since pocket change can get caught in there, but it's not an issue for me. I would 100% recommend this knife to anyone looking for an EDC, with a steel that will out perform just about anything else. Knife center got this to me in only 2 days, and threw in bandana and some other free promo gear. Awesome service from them! The knife is a little pricey, but will last you forever, even if you use and abuse this knife due to the materials it's made out of!
