Great Choice For-It-All Knife

Work knife, EDC, outdoor knife? Yes, yes, yes. And a lot more, too.

The Rove features a drop-point blade of 8Cr13MoV stainless steel, which offers good hardness, wear resistance, and edge retention. The stonewashed finish hides scratches and looks good. The blade opens quickly and easily with SpeedSafe assisted opening and the built-in flipper. Extra-heavy jimping on the flipper makes it extra easy to open—even in wet or slippery conditions.

The handle is glass-filled nylon with heavy texturing—again, to take care of those slippery conditions. An oversized, starburst pivot adds an extra touch of eye-catching interest.

The Rove's secure liner lock provides for safe blade lockup and releases easy when the job is done. The Rove also has a conveniently large lanyard hole and a reversible deep-carry pocket clip.
  • Flipper - May be used on either manual or assisted opening knives. The “flipper” is a protrusion on the back of the blade that the user can pull back on, or flip, in order to move the blade easily out of the handle.
  • SpeedSafe - Assists you to open any SpeedSafe knife quickly and easily with a manual push on the thumbstud or pull back on the flipper; built into many Kershaw best sellers.
  • Liner Lock - Locks the blade open during use; one side of the knife’s steel “liner,” the steel plate to which the handle scales are attached, moves into position behind the blade to securely lock it open.
  • Reversible - Pre-drilled holes in the handle enable the user to change either the tip position or the side on which the knife carries.
  • Blade Length: 3.3" (8.4 cm)

Considered a value steel, 8Cr13 steel provides adequate corrosion resistance but with slightly more carbon than AUS-8, it will sharpen up and hold an edge better.

Pros: Ease of Opening, Pocket Clip, Handle Feel, Weight, Overall Quality, Lock Ease of Use, Blade Sharpness
Cons: None
Tremendous quality at this price point
Yet another example of Kershaw's ability to produce really well made knives for very low prices. Yes, this is not a USA - made Kershaw. If it wasn't for the price and the tiny little word "China" at the very base of the blade, however, you would never know that this was not one of the domestic models. Kershaw is by far the most-represented brand name in my folding knife collection, and this inexpensive model holds its own against many of the USA - made pieces. It's really impressive how quality has been maintained with overseas manufacture. The result is that the Rove is one of the best deals out there at this price point. This knife is slightly larger than some folks will prefer for an EDC, but if you have large hands, you'll love it. I wear XL gloves, and all four fingers wrap around the this grip, instead of my pinky finger hanging off the end of the handle. The weight is pocket friendly comma no doubt get down by the Zytel scales (handle sides). The Kershaw/Ken Onion Speedsafe system works in its usual excellent way; a snappy, positive open with great lockup at the end, but not so violent so that the knife leaps out of your hand. The liner lock engaged securely and is easy to release in the usual manner. The blade shape is very much the same as the blade on my Zero Tolerance 0770cf, a knife selling for over 7 times the price of this one! I've come to really like this shape of blade in an EDC; great slicers, and very good push-cutters, as well (one firm downward push goes right through the thickest part of a corncob with little effort). Also, the stonewash finish will, in my experience with other blades, hide a lot of the little scratches that would otherwise show up as a result of use. This is not the hardest or the most premium steel in the world, but it isn't the kind of soft junk one sometimes encounters at low price points, either. The 8cr13Mov used in this blade sharpens up quite well to an excellent Edge, and maintains that as acceptable well. Just as important, the knife sharpened up easily and comes back to that razor edge without much trouble. While I would not use this as a primary shop knife, it is perfect for an EDC. It came nice and paper-slicing sharp out of the box, and I took it up a notch from there with a simple ceramic rod sharpener. Oh, and the clip comes set for righthand tip-up carry, and can be moved to lefthand tip-up carry (two torx screws, I think #7 size). It's also the same unibtrusive small-and-not-too-pants-shredding tight clip add on my Zero Tolerance 0770cf. Wow. This one is going into my EDC rotation.
