HOFHBSHB: Custom Belt Carry Bearded Camp Axe
Liam Hoffman Blacksmithing
The one and only Hoffman Bearded Camp Axe is hand forged from a block of 4142 chrome/moly alloy steel in North Carolina, USA and heat treated to provide exceptional performance. It is attached to straight grained ash or hickory wood handles, hand carved and sanded from kiln dried lumber. The back poll is hardened and tempered so it can be used as a proper hammer. This compact model weighs 1.6 pounds and measures 12" overall, excellent for use around the campsite or home. The belt sheath is made from thick USA tanned cowhide with button retention snaps. It is 100% handmade in the USA for the working man or woman.

Blacksmithing has a rich history in human civilization. Everything made out of steel was forged by the blacksmith, including weapons, household wares, tools, and everything in between. In later years blacksmiths became more specialized in what they created. The local blacksmith would have one or more apprentices working under him, following his lead and helping supply the town with necessities of living and working. Once the master blacksmith retired an apprentice would take over. The tools that the blacksmith built were used to clear land and develop early American settlements along with settlements all around the world. Remote villages still exist even today that utilize a local blacksmith. Many techniques used in large drop forging factories today derived from blacksmiths.

Forging is the process that comes to mind when you hear the term "Blacksmithing". Steel is heated until it becomes red hot and malleable. Once malleable, or soft, it can be maneuvered by hammers and other tools specific to blacksmiths. Forging is similar to working with clay or play dough, except you can't use your hands!
Caring for Axes
  • Keep oil on the carbon steel axe head when not in use, and wipe the head clean of anything which can hold moisture. Use any of the oils mentioned above in the caring for knives section. The axe handles should be oiled every now and then with boiled linseed oil found at your local hardware store. If the axe changes climates abruptly a fresh coat of oil to the end grains is highly recommended.
  • Axes should be resharpened or touched up after every outing, and it's easy to do this with a fine Arkansas whet stone or leather strop. Be sure that the stone is a very fine grit. Try to sharpen with the stone flat on the mirror finish cutting edge. There is no secondary bevel on the hatchet, so making circular motions with a flat stone onto the flat cutting edge will yield best results.

The Liam Hoffman Belt Axe is the Perfect Outdoor Companion
When I first purchased this axe I wondered how it would compare with my very capable GB Wildlife Hatchet. I was amazed at the product from the moment I opened the box. The details including, but no limited to a walnut wedge, perfectly executed chamfered lanyard hole, dressing both ends of the perfectly straight grained handle with a smooth bevel, the dressing of the poll and the amazing quality of the sheath jump right out at you. The cutting edge out of the box was also as sharp as any 3/32 knife I've ever purchased. Once I got home I did a 2 hour side by side comparison with the GB with astonishing results. When striking with either the edge or poll side of the axe, the contoured handle always puts the head angle in a perfect "handshake" position upon impact giving maximum control and accuracy and zero vibration. While the edge geometry is a little larger than the GB I found the LH to be a much better slicer as well. Partly in part to the perfectly executed grind and secondly to the attention paid to sharpening the tool. I then hammered multiple stakes I made from wood and even larger steel anchor spikes and the poll drove them home like using a 1.5 lb hammer. After finishing, I ran the poll end over a strop and the satin finish came right back. the edge cold still shave arm hair after testing. The GB website says DO NOT strike your poll on metal, not an issue with the LH products. Overall, I love this axe and plan to have many more in the future. This is a product that you 150% get what you paid for and then some. I also like the fact that Liam controls every aspect of the build and each axe and knife of his is 100% American.
