I just got my Apex 818 today and I couldn't be more pleased. China made or not, these knives are beautifully finished and designed. The thumb jimping is very secure and the blade centering is near perfect. The carabiner spring is strong, as is the pocket clip. In addition, the detent for holding the blade closed is smooth and secure. The blade opens with a secure snap and there is no play in any direction. The Carbon Fiber feature is a nice touch too.
This is a great little knife for everyday use. I wear it clipped to my pant's belt loop. Very easy to get to, don't have to have a bulge in my pocket that digs into me. Sturdy and sharp. This is my 2nd one as I lost the first. Didn't hesitate a second to replace that knife with another one just like it.
This is a pretty innovative design. It combines some elements seen in other knives, eg, the carabiner/bottle opener, with some nice touches like the carbon fiber. So, the design is a five. Fairly unique is that there are no sharp edges and rough spots. It's been smoothed out nicely. No smoothing required. Blade is nice, nothing special, but appropriate to the price point. First thing I did was remove the pocket clip. It makes the knife even thinner and lighter. I'm carrying it along with my Nitecore flashlight and small Leatherman tool. The one cautionary note is the liner lock. It just barely locks against the base of the blade. This is not a heavy duty tool, and all the usual caveats about any blade locking device apply. Nonetheless, the lock is rates a three, at best. My standard on fairly compact EDC's is the Kershaw Half Ton Truck. Great knife and outstanding blade, especially for the price. But much larger than this Buck. The Buck will work just fine for the little things that a knife like this is designed for. And its design, works/feels quite nice in my hand. On balance, it's a perfectly serviceable small knife that will work for the small/light tasks that one would expect for a knife of this size.
I really like this knife. It's light weight, easy to open and close. Lockup is firm with no play. The carbon fiber is a nice touch. Not a fan of how it sits in my pocket though.
