Knife Badass-ery

The first high dollar knife I carried was an Emerson with a long clip- I lost it while working within 3 months because the clip snagged on something and was pulled from my pocket. I switched over to Southern Grind and have been carrying ever since. Love their short clip. I have never had any issues and I still get the Emerson Wave feature on the Bad Monkey. Love this knife and the quality is fantastic. They also directly support a childrens camp called Camp Southern Ground so if you purchase a knife you are directly supporting a 501 C3 non profit with your purchase. Great work, Zac and company!

Chicken Fried Big EDC

Pros: outstanding build quality, really comfortable and beautiful carbon fiber handles, love the subtle pocket clip, 14C28N is a very tough stainless steel that doesn’t hold the best edge but is very easy to get razor sharp, rock solid liner lock Cons: blade came slightly sharper than a butter knife, nothing that 10 minutes with a Spydie Sharpmaker and leather strop couldn’t fix :)

Great knife-perfect for what us mere mortals use a knife for

I've had this knife now since last November. I've used it for EDC and it has been my companion during a home renovation and also outdoors. It has cut carpet, boxes, tubing, plastic bags, pruned rose bushes and small trees, plastic sheeting-you name it. The Bad Monkey holds an edge well but is also easy to sharpen. The wave feature is a really nice touch. The scales have a good grip and feel great from a tactile standpoint. The whole knife feels great from a tactile standpoint. My hands are small and I find it easy to handle. It locks up solid and is assembled very well. On top of that it is just a really cool knife. I've not hunted with the knife yet, but for food prep around the kitchen, camp or the grill and smoker, it does just fine. As for the steel nerds, if you have 14C28N someone wants 154CM. If you have 154CM, someone wants S30 or 35V. For the price it could be argued that the steel is a bit lacking, but the other attributes of the knife really do offset any perceived shortcomings in the steel. The barrel standoffs and open construction are classy and practical. The clip is a bit strange but holds the knife just fine. It doesn't wave quite as well as my CQC-7 or Journeyman, but that may be operator error on my part. I'm not a Zac Brown fanboy (do like him as an artist) but do have to say that he really hit it out of the park with this knife.

Great Knife

This is a solid knife. The overall fit and finish is as good if not better than other knives in this price range. This is my second Southern Grind knife and I would highly recommend them.

not bad, not great

My use: holding stuff (bags of feed, ropes, etc...) with one hand while cutting with the other The Not Bad: wave works great - knife easily flips open out of pocket, blade sharp enough as received, scales grippy enough, The Not Great: clip too tight (but easily fixed), thumb stud will not flip the knife open - you need to push the thumb stud all the way to open position (however thumb stud not needed if you use the "wave"), The main issue: the liner lock is flush with the scale making one handed closing very difficult Conclusion: for my needs the knife is just okay since one handed closing is as important as well as opening

If it aint' broke, don't fix it!

I was as equally impressed as the preceding reviewer, with one exception. The design of this knife includes a short pocket clip whose distal end does not even contact the handle scale. Therefore, the knife is loose in the pocket and will drop out of your pocket with ease. My impression is that Southern Grind just wanted to be different; thus, the title of my review. This "feature" caused me to NOT buy the knife. A lost knife is of no use to me, no matter how good it is.
