Fallkniven has larger blades, but the F1 seems to me to be the perfect hand-task-tool size. Man, is that blade thick! You could probably pry open a car door with it. The blade has a convex grind, possibly to give the greatest strength with the laminated steel stock. Shouldn't be too difficult to keep the edge sharp. The blade shape, as well as the handle, are absent of any stylistic flourishes, which I deeply respect. The profiling on the handle and the checkering makes the F1 easy to hold while doing real work. They didn't skimp on the leather sheath, either. It's heavy duty, equaling the knife in quality, and sure to last just as long. This is the knife you want on your belt when your plane goes down.

My favorite knife so far
I use this knife every day for every task you can imagine. From cooking at home, to spreading butter on my bread. On every occasion that I get to be outdoors it is used for battoning wood, hammering nails with the handle. I keep it on my belt when I work where it helps me cut various things all day. I am very happy with the quality of the steel. It is indeed tough, there are NO chips on the edge even though I abuse it. I do use my diamond sharpener to keep that edge perfect and it could take some time to get the perfect edge but I am not as dexterous when it comes to sharpening. I am sure someone with more experience will achieve better results faster. My main bush knife used to be the Glock bayonet which is significantly longer and has a very safe locking mechanism on the sheath compared to F1's Zytel. Frankly I was surprised when I opened the F1 box as I anticipated the size to be slightly larger. It did feel small at first and I was wondering if I should return it. However over time I realized this size made it as versatile as it is and it allowed it to excel in so many tasks. It is a pleasure cutting with this knife, very sharp, stays sharp, no chips on the edge whatsoever. The handle is really comfortable and surprisingly grippy even when wet. Very well balanced knife. Has a nice feel when holding. Back of blade is very thick and gives a safe feel to the knife, it will be a challenge to break even intentionally. The knife is small and can be concealed easily, nevertheless it is meant for small to big tasks. I have the Zytel sheath. Don't mind it but the locking mechanism will release the knife out under some tension if upside down. This was impossible with the Glock, so it is good to build a habit of strapping it so the knife doesn't get lost. It will take some practice before learning to do so with one hand as the strap wraps just right around the knife's handle. Zytel is better than leather because leather can freeze if wet. The knife stays firmly inside the sheath and will not rattle. I tried throwing it a few times but it didn't perform very well. So far it has been my favorite knife, it outperforms all other knives I have although I love them all, some of them have saved my life (my Mora 2000). I tried using the Glock once because forgot the F1 home and it just didn't cut through the wood as well although it is bigger and more prone to abuse. It required more effort to do the tasks. Bottom line: if you need to have only 1 knife buy the F1. You can't go wrong. If you wan't a tool that can do anything with an ease then buy the F1. Cons: throwing, hatching

Simple yet sophisticated
I bought a few of these as gifts and was thrilled with the quality - you'd expect nothing less from Fallkniven. I have a folder and love it as an ED, and the F1 is a great fixed alternative for those more serious uses in the field. I'm an experienced wilderness guide and won't go into the field without my F1.

Great sheath
Lots of knife reviews because it's a classic. So I'll review the sheath. Very stiff but it's leather: give it time and it will be like a trusty pair of shoes. No, I don't go swimming with the sheath. But once it has been broken in you can use it with one hand, no issues. When I decided to buy a knife of this quality I didn't want that Mora feeling.

My fav knife by far
This knife is awesome! I warn you it comes extremely sharp. If you make a leather strop with some polishing compounds it is very easy to sharpen and you can get it barbershop straight razor sharp. I had a custom kydex sheath made by Martin Swinkels and this is my EDC of choice in the bush.

Top knife
I use this knife while camping and hiking. Knife blade is sharp and stays sharp. Have now used it for food prep to line cutting to wood carving and wood battening. Still sharp! Light and balanced. Perfect size.

An excellent choice for field dressing large game
I bought this knife 3 years ago, and have now dressed out 3 elk and can reasonably report on its performance at this task. By dressed out I mean skinned and boned in the field, a task that takes me about 3 hours without breaks and involves a lot of bone scraping etc, Blade shape-generally a good design with enough width and curve for skinning. A bit pointy--I put a very slight bevel on the tip so that it would not snag and now consider it to be excellent, Handle. Rubber material does not get slippery and completely encloses the steel, a feature that is valuable when temperatures are below 10 degrees F. It has sharp checkering that improves grip and the design coupled with the handle material really precludes the possibility of having your hand slip onto the blade, regardless of how gory the knife gets. The tang extends entirely through the handle so I can't see any way that this blade/handle combination would fail. Need to use a brush to get the gore out of the checkering, All in all a near perfect handle. Blade steel. I like VG10--I have a several Shun kitchen knives and was specifically looking for a VG10 hunting knife. VG10 readily takes an edge and holds it pretty well. I have used a 440C knife (Rigid brand) for many years to do this same task and I can state that VG10 holds an edge better: not quite twice as long, but close, I also have 2 S30V knives and consider VG10 to be slightly better. Specifically I like the edge it takes, The blade is really thick--probably much thicker than it needs to be. Sheath. The same design that Buck uses for Specials etc. A good, safe, secure design, if a bit bulky. I would rate the sheath as excellent. All in all, a nearly perfect knife for field butchering an elk.
