Wow!

A hunk of 440C this size would retail for > $100.00., let alone, a rescue/extraction axe. You don’t see many axes/tomahawks made of 440C. Overkill? Under-kill? Heck, I don’t know, but I know I like the high carbon (edge retention), toughness, and corrosion resistance of 440C in many knife and tool applications. I suspect cost, and difficulty/skill to work with 440C to be the reason we don’t see more ‘hawks in 440C. >>>>>>>> Weak Point: Not crazy about cutting a hole in the middle of a high impact tools. I’m not an engineer, but, it seems there would be greater risk of failure with the gas shutoff wrench cut-out design, when using this axe for cutting/chopping/breaching. We shall see. Not a deal breaker at this price. I’ve had my eye on another rescue axe on, KnifeCenter.com, with the gas shutoff wrench cut-out in a different configuration, but almost 3X’s the price. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sheath: This is not a quick release sheath, as you would expect with an axe touted as a combat tool, but a nice sheath for storing in the truck/basement/garage. I plan on making a leather, drop-out-the-bottom, quick release sheath, with gas shut-off wrench cut-out in sheath (for added grip), so the sheath can be left on when using as a pry bar. A slip under extreme force while using this as a pry tool, and blade/spike could slice you wide open. Be nice to have some sort of cap on the end of the, “pry tool” handle while using it as an axe, but haven’t figured that out, yet. I may wrap it in padded bicycle tape. A quick slice with a knife would expose the pry tool when needed. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The spike (or, “Rear Application Piece,” as Timberline calls it) is my favorite spike of all my tomahawks. This thing means business. The bottom edge is like a hollow ground serrated knife blade. I keep getting the Gallagher-esque, urge to breach a large can of baked beans with this thing. So far, I have resisted, but it hasn’t past. This spike (“rap”) is wicked. >>>>>>>>>>>>>> The bit of the axe seems to be angled about right for a breaching axe. Grip is comfortable/grippy with one, or two hands. This T ’hawk measure 13.25” from top of head, to end of handle (pry bar useless as a grip). Well balanced, feels rather quick and spry for an almost 2 lb. tomahawk. This is full tang/handle 440C, no crappy nylon/plastic handle to replace, ever. Everything about this T ‘hawk is well designed, and well executed. For practicality, if you only had one tomahawk, this would be the one to have. I believe this may have collector’s potential. This is an excellent value at this price. You may want to hop on it, before they’re all gone.

Someone Have an Axe to Grind?

My apologies to Bp, of Qatar (below). Sorry you feel mislead. “Differences of opinion, is what makes horse races,” my grandpa used to say. I sold SOG Tomahawks for many years as a hunting/firearms sales associate at a big outdoors store that rhymes with, “Dander Fountain;” and on weekends thru my own business at gun shows. They are fine, inexpensive (I’m avoiding the word cheap) tomahawks. SOG will replace your handle when it fails, just mail it back to them (kind’a inconvenient in a tactical/rescue/extraction situation). I have kept two SOG Tomahawks, a Tactical Hawk, and a Battle Axe. The Battle Axe (now discontinued?) is the only SOG ‘hawk I know of that was one piece steel construction (+ 2 camp hatchets). Battle Axe is a fine, compact ‘hawk that I keep in the cab of my truck to smash out a window if I ever go in the drink, and it has butchered much game. No SOG Tomahawk I know of is touted as a rescue/extraction hawk, and I trust none of their ‘hawks to do, so (other than smashing out windows). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I stand behind my review, below. Timberline, Dave Young CBT is an excellent rescue/extraction ‘hawk, and an exceptional value at this price point. It is made of the original, “Super Steel” (nothing cheap there, go read up on 440C at custom knife maker, Jay Fisher’s website). I defy Mr. Bp to destroy/damage this tomahawk (failure; not chipping/rolling of edges). I’d try using it at about -40 F., where steel becomes brittle, if I were inclined to achieve failure. I can achieve failure with my SOG Tactical ‘Hawk in an afternoon. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> A piece of 440C bar stock 0.25”X8”X24” to make one Dave Young CBT retails for $376.11. Bar stock to make the 420 stainless head of a SOG Tactical ‘hawk retails for $143.33 (1”X3”X24”= $429.64 , divide by 3 ‘hawk heads out of this size bar = $143.333…). The price of nylon/fiberglass handle + screws is unknown, but definitely a weak link in the SOG ‘Hawks. You get what you pay for; and every once and awhile, you can find an exceptional value, like this Timberline, Dave Young CBT. The price to have this custom Kydex/nylon sheath made would be more than the price charged for the total package, here at KnifeCenter.com. Looking for a cheaper ‘hawk? Schrade’s, SCAXE4 is a good value, one piece hawk. Looking for something more expensive? Check out the 21.6”, Ontario, Fire SPAX Firefighter Tool (part # ON8419), both available at KnifeCenter.com.

The Sheath Doesn't Suck , WOW !!

This hawk comes with a very nice sheath , especially compared to other hawks. The one star review says rather buy a SOG . Seriously? SOG is a kids toy compared to my Timberline.Plastic/Nylon handle , bolted to a small head and very short tang. With Timberline, can you say FULL TANG !! It has an overmolded handle , no bolts or screws , it is one piece of steel. Excellent Tactical Hawk, with a serrated spike that will shred holes in anything you hit. If you want to split wood , buy an Axe. If you are SWAT or Military , excellent piece of gear. 5 stars no doubt.

Dissapointed!!!!

The only other review is what convinced me to purchase this axe. On receipt I was very disappointed. The axe looks cheap and in my opinion is not woth the price, nevermind the so called original pricetag before discount. Rather buy a SOG for half the price!!!! Much better look and quality!!!
