BC517D: Bear & Son 517D Balisong Butterfly Knife 4.125" Damascus Blade, Genuine India Stag Bone Handles

Bear and Son Cutlery

Bear and Son does a reasonably good job on these damascus knives. Please do not expect the level of craftsmanship you may find from Boker or Case. These are slightly more crudely crafted but still have great materials and look and feel. Please note the extremely reasonable price compared to other brands made in the US!

Damascus steel combines steels of different properties and produces blades with extraordinary toughness and edge-holding ability. Known as the Steel of the Ancients, Damascus knives and swords have lived in legend since the creation of Damascus steel nearly 2,000 years ago. The ancient city of Damascus was one of the centers of production of this steel. That, combined with the fact that the steel resembled the damask cloth which was being produced in the city of Damascus- both having a "water-marked" pattern - gave this steel its name. Viewed under a microscope, the cutting edge of a Damascus blade displays tiny saw-tooth carbides which are formed by forging in a coal fire. This enables the blade to cut even when it feels dull to the touch. Flexibility is superb. Every piece of Damascus is as unique as a thumb print. When ground on an angle, as in a blade, the displayed pattern is stunning. Note: Limited quantities available. Made in Jacksonville, Alabama, USA.

Maintenance might be required
Dropped the knife once while flipping it about the bone inlay popped off. When I initially got the knife the screws were tight and I could not easily open and close the knife as would be expected of a balisong. I Had to take a screwdriver and loosen one side. Additionally I had to take WD-40 and further lubricate the joints. Latch was hard to utilize when locking in open position and closed position. I couldn't close the knife and needed to squeeze extra hard on handles to lock. Disappointed.

Smooth and tons of fun
I bought this as gift for my son. He has enjoyed the heck out of this knife. At first, for him, it was a little too snug (the blade movement), but soon enough after several days of walking around the house flipping and maneuvering this thing - it was like second skin for him. He is a good boy and is responsible with his knives. He has built up respect, skills, and confidence in handling his knives.Personally, I was a bit intimidated by the size and how sharp this knife was, and continues to be (such a rugged blade). But in teaching my son and him learning the respect needed to handle this tool, well it (the knife) had brought us closer and built his confidence. Bear & Sons - thank you for such a cool, fun, rugged, and quality made product.btw - he has had the knife for a month know and is still as sharp as when first arrived, and even with daily use (and the occasional drop, it is very smooth movement.
