CISD35475: Modern Wakizashi

Dragon King

The Dragon King Modern Wakizashi represents a contemporary interpretation of what the renowned Samurai would look like in our time.  Using the best of the latest technological materials, the low maintenance of this katana is perfect for the urban warrior of today. The humble attributes of this katana belie its true strength and resilience.

The differentially tempered 19.5” 1566  steel blade features a real Hamon line with a copper habaki and seppa. The tsuka encapsulates the tang in textured G10 and is dual pinned for a secure grip that is unremovable. The silver menuki on the tsuka are shi shi (lion dogs) which are embedded in the handle. The textured black saya features an olive paracord sageo around a polymer kurikata and kojiri. The Modern Katana also has the Modern Tanto as a companion piece to complete your modern warrior collection.

Pros: Blade Material, Finish, Handle Material, Materials, Overall Quality, Usable
Cons: Sheath/Scabbard
Great little sword, sheath is bad.
So good things first; sword is itself very nice, though the finish is rather bad, it came reasonably sharp, though certainly could use a touch up. Handle is grippy and very solid feeling in the hand, and a few cuts on some light targets have given me confidence that it will remain solid unless it hits anything really hard maybe. Now the bad, unfortunately, the sheath(and mine in particular) is just quite mediocre. It’s at least an actual wood saya instead of being entirely plastic like the Hanwei Tactical swords, but the stippled finish on it is quite ugly in person, and doesn’t feel particularly high quality in hand. My particular example has a strange quirk where the retention is extremely poor, except at one specific angle, which tells me the habaki is not retaining it, it’s binding in the wood of the saya. Either way, the sword itself is quite nice and sturdy for the price, I still recommend it in the end, just figure on needing to shim the saya for good retention.
