Exotac

Exotac's biggest firestarter ever, the fireROD XL is the bigger brother to the fireROD and has been brought to life by popular demand! Not only is it larger, but it also includes repair tape which can also be burned to aid in starting a fire.

The fireROD series was created to be the perfect fire starting tool for carrying in a ferro-loop on a knife sheath. The ferrocerium rod is replaceable so you won't need to discard this tool when the rod is worn out. The design is simple, highly reliable, and offers plenty of storage for tinder or water purification tablets.

  • Designed for Bushcrafting
  • The fireROD is designed to be carried in a ferro loop on a knife sheath.
  • Your Knife is your Striker
  • Use the spine of your knife to strike the fireROD. Many bushcrafting knives do not round over the edges of the spine leaving them sharp for use as a striking tool.
  • Tinder Storage
  • Remove the top cap to reveal a large compartment that holds four quickLIGHT tabs (included) or tinder of your choice.
  • Heavy Duty Repair Tape
  • The approx. 12" (4.7 cm) of repair tape can be used for patching holes, as an improvised bandage, creating bush-crafting tools or even as tinder (yes it's flammable!)
  • 1/2" Ferrocerium Rod
  • The included Ferro rod is not only waterproof but replaceable as well. Simply unthread it from the body of the fireROD XL and thread in a replacement rod.
  • Anodized Aluminum Body
  • The fireROD is CNC machined, in house from USA high-grade 6061 aluminum then anodized for protection in one of four signature Exotac colors.

Excellent balanced ferrocerium rods
The metals used in making a ferrocerium rod can run from EBay cheap and so hard you'll need a Corona shears sharpener or M4 lathe mill bit blank to strike them, to medium hardness Bayite rods from Amazon to the excellent dragon goop slinging model once sold by Firesteel dot com for years. I consider the EXOTAC rods to be about the same as Uberliben rods. This stuff works, the backup tinder compartment is well done

Pros: Ease of Use
Cons: Overall Quality
The rod itself is excellent BUT
The ferrocerium itself performs exactly as presented WITH a proper hard,,sharp striker...Mora Bushcraft Black, Kansbol, Cold Steel.SRK 3V etc. But when I unscrewed the waterproof capsule to check if the tinder was there the O RING was broken which renders the capsule all but useless except for grip. The threading on the Ferro rod is well sufficient to hold the rod on the capsule. If I knew the dimensions on the O ring , I would acquire them myself and I will, but for now this is just a pain. Second item I have ordered that is defective from the factory. Sorry KnifeCenter, but I don't lie in reviews
