Possibly needs a >/= 20° bevel angle

This is a follow up to my 4/7/24 review in which I complained about edge rolling with minimal use. Upon enquiry, I learned my professional sharpener had given the edge a 17° bevel (I don't know what the factory angle was). On a hunch, I resharpened the edge with a guided 20° bevel. I then used it to chop and whittle very well-seasoned and hard oak logs from my firewood pile, after which there was no chipping or edge rolling, and it could still slice paper quite well - though not quite as well as my two 3V knives I treated the same way. Some light honing brought the edge back to its post resharpening condition. It appears that the bevel simply needs an angle of at least 20° for the AUS-10A blade to be a reliable survival/outdoors/ camping knife. Still, CPM-3V would be better.

workhorse knife

I actually have three of these babies: two in AUS10 and one in Magnacut. I keep the Magnacut one in my car's emergency bag and use the AUS10 models for camping, random chores around the house, and gardening. I really like the grip and how quick and easy the AUS10 is to sharpen and hone. It came very sharp from the factory, too. The sheath is okay, but not outstanding.

AUS-10A steel not up to the job

Bought this for camping. Razor sharp out of the box. Absolutely LOVE the look, color, balance, ergonomics, and feel in my XL hands as well as the sheath, but I am sadly very disappointed in the blade material. Light and brief batoning of fatwood kindling caused an edge roll that became a chip after honing. Previously used a CPM-3V blade CS SRK much more extensively for the same task without the blade even dulling noticeably. Had it professionally resharpened to a fine razor edge, then used it to cut up two 6-pound grilled chickens - which also caused an edge roll that once again chipped on honing. Again, I had previously used other knives for the same task over many years, including (among others) a 5 inch Wursthof kitchen knife, an old 7 inch high carbon butcher's knife, a Dexter/Russel chef's knife, and a VG10 San Mai CS Master Hunter for the same rask, and had NEVER had this happen before. None of the written or video reviews I had seen prior to purchase warned me of this weakness. I can only conclude that the AUS-10A steel is simply not up to the job for which the FreeReign was designed, and I dare not depend upon it in the woods. Were Demko to make the FreeReign in CPM-3V steel however, it would be an UNBEATABLE camping knife.

Lemon of a sheath

The blade is excellent. The sheath is deceptively bad. It is not able to be used for left handed carry like advertised. The belt loop snap doesn't engage securely. The velcro is below par. Was hiking and noticed my knife and sheath missing from my belt. It had unsnapped itself and slid to the ground. Found it but spent hours retracing my steps. DCA said "you're not going to want to carry a knife if the sheath is unusable ". This is that knife. Super disappointed. One side of sheath has recesses for the screws the other does not. I have spent a lot at Knifecenter but you have to have some quality control.
