Iconic design, robust dimensions, and build clearly intended to be used as a working knife by war fighters – this knife thus uniquely, elegant in my opinion. I carry what I like, whether knife or other tools and find a way to do so even a few adjustments in clothing or carry weight have to be gotten used to if you like a slim, lightweight or rounded pocket knives for EDC or just for the hard days work on the battlefield, farm or suburban backyard, this is not your knife If you like a hard-working piece of history, perhaps this is it.

Rugged Knife

Very easy to open, Heavy for its size, feels overbuilt and tough. I like the G10 finish and feel. Blade finish was good, and the edge was sharp throughout. There is no marking on the blade to indicate D2 and the Al Mar logos don't have any red it's all silver on the one I received contrary to the photos. I waited till this was on sale and I was very happy with the cost.

An Updated Classic that Got Everything Right

I can't say enough good things about this knife. It's heavy and rock solid in the hand, with full metal liners. The price of some of the full-size variations of this version is incredible, putting this model in contention with the best affordable Cold Steel knives. The action is great and barely feels assisted, although it clearly is. The mechanism looks fully enclosed inside the handle. I have been disappointed with $200 knives with assisted opening that were either too snappy or too sluggish when opened with a reasonably fast flick or with the flipper. There is something about this knife that makes it a pleasure to carry, if you don't mind the weight (sometimes I am in the mood for a heavier, solid knife). No blade play, a thick partly-serrated blade perfect for a lot of practical applications, and the shape of the handle, combined with the guard formed by the flipper tab once the blade is open, ranks this knife among EDC/tactical knives with the best and most secure grips, as good as any Emerson. The shape of the handle also lets you use the bottom of the knife to strike if necessary. I love that the bottom of the handle is fairly flat. Price is a consideration here, of course. I think this is one of the best values you can get in a knife, especially for those who like to carry a more tactically-inclined knife and who also keep a multitool or a Victorinox when needed in social or professional situations. Finally, the deep carry clip is a bit stiff (pull on it and bend it a little to make it more usable).

Emphasis on combat

I don't believe this knife can be considered an EDC. It is large, tough, hefty and has a big sharp blade meant for some serious cutting, piercing and tougher jobs. I believe this would make for a great outdoors/camping/hunting folder, and if that's the case I believe there are other brands/models more suited to the task. This thing feels like a folding dagger. I would be reluctant to carry this anywhere but in very rural areas. Excellent quality, just limited applications.

Initial perspective

This is not a petite pocket knife. It has some weight to it, I hope that translates to strength and durability. I like the pocket clip, it is low profile so it won't snag things as you brush by them. And the clip has a strong grip. The knife opens strong and locks open solid. Should serve me well as an every day carry tool. The other reviewers that think it it too big for edc, I don't agree with. It is perfect size for edc if you are blue collar and actually work for a living, and are in a more rural environment where knives are just another tool and not seen as a threatening weapon. This knife is small enough to carry cliped in your pocket but large enough to actually be useful. The blade is not marked with metalurgy which is usually a sign of low quality steel, but it is marked with the knife model number so you have to trust that when the knife model description says it is D2 steel that is what you actually have. It did sharpen up fine, will have to see how it holds an edge.

Update from 2021

Update: I bought this knife in Nov 2021, it is now Dec. 2025. I have carried this knife every day sine I bought it. It has held up well and I am not nice to it. The blade assist quit working after a year or so, not a big deal for me, it just takes a little more wrist flick to open. With regard to the blade metalergy being D2 tool steel, this one is not like my other D2 blades. I have to regularly touch up the edge on this blade, it doesn't hold an edge like the others do. It is a very durable blade though. Overall, it's a tough knife that stands up to daily abuse, just expect to sharpen regularly.
