Great knife overall

The first thing I really enjoy about this knife is the ease of use. The assisted opening has a quick response and the Axis lock is always a plus. I also like how you can lock the blade in the open position which prevents any accidental pressure on the Axis lock lever which will unlock the blade prematurely. The sharpness of the blade is everything to be expected. As with most reviews I have seen on this knife, the handle leaves a little to be desired. The "cheap" feel of the plastic doesn't leave you with much reassurance that it will hold up during any kind of shock. Overall, it's a great knife. If you are looking for something that is quick on the draw and will cut through just about anything while retaining an edge, this knife will serve you well.

Nice assist action...EDC...Good size and weight.

I bought this as a Christmas gift and found the locking slider was a bit rough in it's function. Once fully unlocked, the assist works like a charm. Very nice feel and size. Handle sides are plastic and I would have preferred a non-slip rubberized material. Also the Valox handles sound hollow (a little cheap sounding for a knife of this cost). Overall a nice EDC.

Benchmade Barrage 583SBK

Very good knife. Great steel and assisted action. The only issue I have with this and all other Barrages is the handle material. It leaves much to be desired. The handle is made of very slick material with no jimping on the blade. If this were used in a self defense situation, I feel it is very likely that your hands could slip onto the blade with very little effort. Aside from that, love the design, love the steel, love the action, and still love Benchmade!

583sbk

I just bought the 583sbk knife for an edc. While I do agree with the other reviews that the handle quality may not be up to the 581 you cannot expect the same quality at the price difference. The 581 is more a gentleman's edc but harder to sharpen while the 583 is more of a military knife not meant to be kept pretty. Overall I have no problem with the knife. Benchmade has and always will make a top notch product.

Fantastic EDC

This is my EDC and I use it for everything from cutting open boxes to hacking back stray pricker bush branches up to 1/2" while walking around my property . I have been using it for over a year now and it's held up well. Blade holds a nice edge through a good amount of use and the black coating on the blade is barely worn down. I do agree with the other two reviewers that the handle material is not the best. Handed mine to a friend and told him to use the spine to tap a bolt into a slightly too tight hole. He used the handle area instead. First tap, and bam!!! Found out the handles are hollow. I needed to send it in for repairs anyway. Reason for repairs were the handle cracking and the springs that hold the locking stud in it's upright position failed. This caused unintentional openings and closings (my index finger has a new scar to prove the latter). Sent it in for repairs and got it back ASAP and as good as new. Looking foward to purchasing the new Contego, but if you don't want to spend that much dough this is the best EDC for the money!!!

Overall, a nice knife, except for the handle material

I used this knife on a bunch of heavy tasks on our property; wore the blade out, broke off the tip, and tried to grind it down and put a new edge on it. But, it was still rough. I sent it back to Benchmade, who thoroughly reconditioned it (new screws, clip, reworked the assisted-opening, etc. It’s back to like a brand new knife. I love every single thing about the knife, except for the Valox handles. They work, they take abuse, but they just feel cheap. If Benchmade offered a G-10 grip on this, or Micarta, etc., i would be a solid 5.
