Classic as Classic Can Be!
When I first ordered this knife, I thought I would hate it; I usually prefer knives on the smaller size for my little hands (I'm 5'6, 115 lbs). But as it turns out this knife is one of the best EDC knives that I currently own! The handle to blade ratio, size, weight, feel in hand, lockup, speed of deployment, and overall quality of the knife is stupendous; I carry it almost everyday at work and at home, where the 4.5 ounce weight and compact size makes this knife a dream to carry. I am utterly shocked that the designers managed to cram a nearly 4 inch blade into such a tight package. I'm a stockroom worker in retail, so I deal with alot carboard, plastic straps, heat-reflective styrafoam, and plastic sheeting on a day to day basis. Although I use a box cutter for 80% of tasks, sometimes I bust out the 710 for really difficult jobs that the thin blades on the box cutters can't handle...and this knife takes it all. The recurve blade makes mince meat out of materials and the Axis lock enables me to quickly deploy the blade, get the job done, and close it in the blink of eye. Obviously, this knife is much larger than most EDC blades and is NOT an ideal choice for a work environment like a retail setting, but I will say it is one of the most EDCable 4 inch blades on the market. I only have two complaints with this knife. The first is this knife came disappointingly dull. I couldn't even cut paper with it out of box, which was frustrating considering the $xxx price tag. This is a pretty common problem with all my Benchmades, and I think it's time they listened to their customers and fixed this glaring problem. They really should back up their relief edges and start looking at Kershaw and Spydercos' terrifc edge geometry. Nonetheless, after a few swipes on a fine-grit-rod, I got it to hair-shaving sharpness levels. Still, I shouldn't have to resort to using my own sharpener to "fix" a brand-new knife. The other problem is I noticed my blade hits the backspacer, leaving a slight mark in the backspacer. I knew about this problem from research, and contacted Benchmade about it. They promptly offered to replace the backspacer with barrel spacers (which I prefer anyways) if I sent the knife in, which I thought was very interesting since few manufacturers are willing to replace stock components with completely different ones. Nonetheless, it's still a defect that may irk people so I thought I'd mention it. Despite these two complaints, I still think this knife is worth every penny, especially considering the absolutely amazing Knifeceneter price ($xxx instead of the usual $150 price tag!? Woohoo!) It's a gorgeously classic knife that can get the job done at a much lighter weight, size, and price than most other 4 inch blades. If you are a fan of Benchmade or larger sized folders, this knife is a must own!
