Up until about 4-5 months ago, I didn't know squat, about knives. One of the forums I frequent, has a bunch discussions on the topic. I began reading about, and drooling over, all of the knives being discussed. And one knife kept popping up, no matter where I looked. The Benchmade 940 Osborne. Everyone raves about how it is considered by knife enthusiasts, to be the perfect EDC folder. When my birthday came around, and my wife asked me what I wanted, I chose the 940-1s combo blade. At the time, my current EDC, was a $18 Gerber, with a combo blade as well. I've come to really rely on the combined duties, of this type of blade. The Gerber is still a great knife. But, nowhere near the refinement of the Osborne. The Gerber, is about 6+ oz. And that's being optimistic. The Osborne is under 3 oz. the weight never really mattered to me, until I tried this knife. The lock up, is vault like. It feels like a fixed blade, when opened. Absolutely, no play at all. My blade, came perfectly centered, and shaving sharp. The handles are smooth, and conform to the lines of my palm perfectly. So, I can easily say that this is the most comfortable knife, I've ever held. Even the pocket clip feels good in my hand. Since Receiving this Benchmade, I've purchased 2 other premium knives, including a Spyderco Native 5 and a ZT 0770cf. All have the carbon fiber and premium steel blades. While I like the assist opening blade and blade geometry of the ZT. I keep going back to the Osborne to carry. Of the three, the fit and finish seems to be a tad better on the BM. The carbon fiber handles, are just a little more refined with smoother cuts. Don't get me wrong, the other two, are no slouches. The Sprint Run Native 5, is absolutely beautiful! It's a knife of substance. It even has, arguably, the best edge holding steel available, period. The only steel, capable of unseating the Benchmades s90v,.... CPM s110v. But, the Natives blade geometry, is more suited for a Gadiator match. Not the Every Day Carry characteristics of the 940-1. I feel like, if I pulled the ZT or Spyderco out, around other people, they would all run away screaming. The Benchmade, is more of a gentleman's knife. If you pulled that out around other people, they may look at you strange. But they'd also be expecting you to start whittling a piece of wood.
