I'm a fan of the the custom titanium handle folders made by CRK, Scott Cook, etc and I must say that this Boker holds it's own against some of the best. Smooth action. Blade is centered, thick, and sturdy. I really like the integrated pocket clip. It's out of your way when you're holding it. What a sweet knife!

Heavy duty EDC?
The Federal came sharp, out of the box. The overall fit and finish is relatively good, with the grips and inlays giving a good impression. The blade lock firmly into place, with no play. Closed, the blade is centred, also with no play. However, don't be fooled, this knife is a beast. The initial pictures does not capture how thick and bulky the blade is. Although it has a flipper, with the added weight of the blade, it is almost impossible to deploy the blade with just a flip. You flip, then use a wrist flick to fully deploy. Part of this might be due to the slightly rough roller in the frame lock. With some lubrication and time, this might improve. Good buy for someone that requires a heavy duty EDC, but not my first choice to carry every day. The pocket clip, although neat, is not very practical, and for someone working in jeans, this will not work.

I’ll preface my comments by saying that I own several GTC customs so my bar is set pretty high here. There have been a spate of GTC collabs recently: Böker, Kershaw, Zero Tolerance. Because of my interest in Gus’ work (GTC), I wanted to experience them all. I started with the Böker Federal. Handling the knife, the shape is interesting but the depth of detailing and thickness of the scales were thin. The surface feel is kind of dull, the inlays thin and cheesy. The detent is loose and the heavy (but nicely satinized) blade rattles out and clanks into position. Although there is noisy play in the blade while opening, it locks up nicely. I like the blade. Although ‘only’ 440C, I’ve learned from the work of a few makers to respect it when properly heat treated and sub-zero quenched. It is well-sharpened and—as I mentioned before—the shape and surfaces are attractive. Although the blade is thick and heavy, it needs and begs for thicker scales with deep, sculpted details. The clip is innovative and ‘very GTC’, yet not practical for thicker materials like jeans or just pants pockets in general. The clanky deployment was not easily adjusted out without tightening the pivot to the point the blade was tight to move and off-centre. Oh, well. This knife suffers badly when compared to a GTC custom. It is not a great value at this price point. It lives in the bottom of the cabinet now, forever entombed with the other McKnives and regretable purchases.
