Excellent smaller, but adequate, tool when more discrete carry needed

I also purchased the larger Buck Selkirk and purchased this one for the occasions that local custom and regulations require a smaller, more discrete, sheath knife. I am an outdoorsman and carry a sheath knife nearly all the time. I find a sheath knife quicker to deploy and get whatever needs to be cut done. I have had the occasion to use the Buck on rope, leather, nylon and wood thus far and it has done admirably on all. It had a good edge right out of the box and was put to work the day I received it. I have big hands and noticed the Buck had slim grips, a common occurrence for me. I will improve the thickness using rubber tape until I get it right and then will make permanent changes to the handle to fit my hand better - all of which will be easy to do because of the screw-attached handles. I wish that this knife had the fire starter that the larger Selkirk has and am working on that with Buck's help (need some parts). The sheath and belt attachment are excellent and facilitate a single-hand deployment and recovery. All in all, a very nice tool at a reasonable price.

So much better than expected

I bought this knife because it felt so good in my hand and was perfectly balanced. I normally buy custom or.more expensive steels, but after 2 elk and 3 antelope, I could not be happier, especially at this price point. I did have a new leather sheath made for it, but that is just a preference, nothing wrong with the Buck sheath.

Excellent Small EDC Knife

The Small Selkirk is a perfect small EDC knife that has an excellent Kydex type of sheath that is kept simple. I say that because I also have the large Selkirk with a very poor elaborate sheath that is NOT very comfortable to carry on the waist belt. I take the small Selkirk on many of my hikes. It's very comfortable and don't even know I'm carrying it most of the time. Highly recommend it. Wish the large Selkirk had the same simple. sheath.

One of my favorite buck knives

So I bought my small Selkirk a couple years ago and I am both pleased and disappointed. The knife itself is a good outdoor knife for almost every task. The grind is nice and slicey but yet strong enough for other harder jobs, and the handle swells are perfect and should fit most hands. The edge retention is good old Buck 420HC quality that hold its edge longer than you might expect from this steel. And now here is where the design falls short. The handle can be a little slippery but not that big of a deal. I will say that a more prominent finger guard would be much appreciated. The sheath however is where this package has its main flaw. The belt loop and the actual sheath are two separate parts and are only held together with one screw. After a while of carrying this knife the grommet the screw holds into broke and the sheath is the rendered useless for carry. That is my main qualm with this knife, not being able to carry it is a bit of a problem. The good thing is that buck stands behind their forever warranty and replaced my sheath with a leather one (maybe from the 103) so now it is just fine. Also on a side note it is made in China not USA. So it is a good blade but not as nice fit and finish as the USA made ones are.

great balance

Love the balance of the knife buck really knows how to make a good looking knife. The only critique is the Micarta handle feels fake and plastic not what I expected.
