Up to the mark
This the fourth buck that i owned and i am always satisfied with buck. Comes very sharp and excellent for outdoor. Good and sturdy grip, well balance knife.

Great knife
This knife has VERY smooth handling. Maybe my favorite knife from Buck so far. The handle is near-perfect for utility tasks (hunting, camping, field dressing and even survival). The size is just right. Good thickness (about 5/32), small, but quick and VERY sharp due to the hollow grind. Only con: lousy sheath...thin plastic liner inside a thin nylon sheath (what's up with that, Buck?). Knife overall though is 5/5!

Buck Vanguard
The perfect field knife. Covers all jobs. The steel 420HC is a perfect drop point blade. Easy to sharpen and holds a great edge. The rubber textured grip holds great even when wet. This knife will last generations.

Excellent knife
This is a beautiful drop point knife, it takes a shaving edge and fits my larger hands extremely well. It's comfortable both right side up and upside down. Has a great belly for slicing, but is a bit thick for kitchen work. However, the pommel is brass and is threaded on to the rat tail tang as well as glued. The brass is far softer than the 420HC steel. On my first knife I hit the pommel and it became cockeyed. When I tried to true it, the pommel stripped off, and the knife disassembled itself. Buck replaced it no questions asked and the abuse was admittedly my fault, but be wary of this, for it can be stripped off.

This is a great knife. Its got a good Comfortable grip sharp edge. The sheath I didn't like I wish it were more like the 119 sheath but overall one of my favorite knives.

I had a Vanguard in the 80's. It was one of my favorite knives. Loved the way it fit my hand. It had the expected Buck ability to take and hold a sharp edge. With one exception which I'll go into in a moment, it did everything I asked of it, the way a good knife should. But, as too often happens, it got away from me at some point and I never replaced it. Until now. This new Vanguard is exactly the same as the old one, in every respect but one. Maybe two. The new nylon/plastic insert sheath, while functional, is a poor substitute for the nice leather sheath these knives wore back in the day. It's hard to remember, but I believe the old blade might have had a bit nicer polish on it, but maybe not. As I said, there was one thing the old Vanguard simply did not do, and that speaks to what I was saying about today's Vanguards being identical to the old ones. These knives have a powerful chemical odor from the rubber handle material. It is a disappointment that Buck has never done anything about it. I never was able to fully de-scent the handle on my old knife, so it always stayed home on bowhunting expeditions. Bowhunters would be better served with the wood handled version, in my opinion. For all other hunts where scent isn't that big of a problem, the rubber handle makes for a very comfortable, non-slip grip. So, I knock off a half point for the sheath and another half point for Buck never solving the odor issue. Not quite excellent. Still, it's nice to have an old favorite back in the fold.
