Back to the future

It is such a treat having a real shave and this baby hasn't disappointed. Great design, really well made and easy to use. Heavier than I was expecting but getting used to that. Haven't used a safety razor for 20 years and even then I hardly did. This is easy to use, cuts really well and looks cool beside the sink. No problem for novices (me really) just took my time at first. I had some shave gel left over and gave that a try before going to creams and badgers. No problem with the gel and much quicker. Highly recommended product.

Merkur Long Handle DE Razor 180

Gentlemen, if you haven't tried the old fashioned method of wet shaving with a double edge razor, you should. The old ways still work, and in my opinion - better. This razor is made of high quality metal, is affordably priced, simple to use, provides a clean close shave, and is much less expensive in the long run than the very expensive "modern" razors. I started shaving with a DE (because that's what my dad used), then moved to the "new" multi-blade razors, and eventually came back to the trustworthy and dependable DE. As a bonus, there's far less waste going to the landfill and that's good for Mother Earth.

Great razor!

Been using this razor for the last 15 years. Just take apart and clean it a couple times a year. Works great, and doesn't break the bank. Used Merkur blades when they made them in Germany.

Love it

Wanted to try getting away from the high price cartridge Ive been using. Im very happy with my choice. Razor seems to get as close as my 5 blade cartridge, but it take a couple swipes. It takes me a minute or two longer to shave, but Im going fairly slow till I get used to the razor.

Great place to get knives and all your shaving needs. Started with a safty razor and have made fool circle. Merkur razor was everything they said and more. Best with there blades no nicks, no so with dollar store blades. Tread myself whole new kit. Pre de Provence balm and soaps where great. In fact put balm aftershave in hot water before you start your shave. No need to say more. The col. Conk Italian scissors cut great. Unlike most these days. And the 14" old timer butcher knife makes good backpack machete.

Excellent Razor

This is an excellent razor. It will shave your face as Smooth as a mirror. Don’t buy the disposable type from the drugstore. Buy this razor and some double Edge blades. It’s vastly superior to disposable razors. Then buy a silver tipped badger brush and some shaving soap. Lather up and shave with it and you’ll be amazed at its quality and the quality of the shave you will receive. You will never return to disposable razors. Plus you will save a pile of money over time.

Love It !

I've used a shaving brush and mug pretty much since I've been shaving (35+ years), but always used regular razors and disposable blades. I finally decided to go completely retro and get a safety razor. This one works great and is a great price! No issues with nicks and shaves as cleanly as any of the new-fangled ones I've used.

Long time satisfied user.

I have used the Merkur Long Handle Double Edge Safety Razor for around 15 years, now. I don't know exactly as I didn't write down the date and it certainly shows no wear. What I like most is the long handle, as it truly fits my larger hand. I use it with a brush and soap cake; gel stuff clogs up the bathroom sink. I am over 70 and have never used an electric "razor". I have had the same full-beard for 37+ years, but trim the neck, cheeks and under the lower lip. Thank you for your product. I certainly fills my expectations.

Very good razor!

I bought one of these because it is so much cheaper to replace the blades on this than it is on my gillette fusion. I was tired of paying so much money for just a replacement blade. I bought this to try out and I've been very happy with it. I've been using it for weeks and it works great. This gets a good shave, but in all fairness it's not as close of a shave as the gillette. It's a nice fine shave about 95% of what a gillette would do.

Great Razor - Especially for a Beginner Like Me

This is a great razor. I am just learning DE wet-shaving and this razor has been very forgiving. It certainly doesn't irritate my face like the old cartridge razors did. I could kick myself for not getting into this sooner. I have no complaints and would certainly order this again. Great razor with great quality.

Razor

Well this was my first razor of this kind, at first was a bit scared about shaving with it. After the first time I gained confidence, the only reason I do not give it a 5 star rating is cause the shave still is not as close as my schick hydro 5, maybe 95% there. Overall love the razor and will continue to gain experience with it!!!!

Surprisingly Good

I grew up shaving using modern, multi-blade razors and had never tried an old-fashioned one like this. My main perk at looking at one of these was that I wanted more affordable refills, as other name brands can be pricey. Overall, I am pleased with this razor. It is taking a little getting-used-to, but it does the job. I really have only two gripes, which is why I gave it 4 / 5: 1) it seems like I have to take some extra strokes to get as even of a shave (I guess that's the difference between one blade and five blades in a single pass?), and 2) it's a little harder to reach tight areas, like directly under the nasal septum, as the safety-head on this makes tight access a little more difficult. The cons aside, though: this handle has a nice weight to it, and is easy to operate for changing blades and during shaving. Since I have slightly longer fingers and larger palms, I think that this 4" variety works better for me than the 3" variety. My current shave gel worked fine. And although I had to take, say, four passes instead of two, I had equal closeness and results. After my first use, I let my wife caress my cheek, and she commented that she couldn't tell any difference in quality versus my old multi-blade razor.

Off to a great start

...as opposed to a grate start, like so many razors do to your face! Having grown heartily sick of the trend to go with more and more blades in disposable heads (Gullet-Ripper with 128 Blades!) and reaching an age when my vision and hand steadiness is making straight razor shaves more risky, I decided to go simple. I ordered the Merkur Long Handle along with 30 additional Merkur double edged blades from Knife Center. Arrived fast, normal for KC. Loading a blade is pretty intuitive, just be sure to hold by the narrow ends that are not sharpened (but if I have to tell you this, maybe you need to sell your sharps and buy an electric shaver, ok?). In reading reviews of this and other double edged razors, I understood that the threaded screw in the cap bears all the responsibility of holding things together, so I did not cramp down tightly, simply snug. Further reading in the last few days further supports this as overtightening can change blade geometry and cause nicks. I followed my normal shaving regimen, namely dropping the shaving mug in a sink full of hot water, taking a hot shower, then retrieving the now warmed porcelain mug from the water, putting in the shaving soap cake, and applying the brush to make foam. With my 5 days of beard growth soaped up, I began to take slower than normal strokes with the new razor and blade. Lacking a pivoting head, it is critical to learn the angle needed to get the proper contact. A stroke or two and I had the feel for it. The feel of the razor is very smooth, no pulling of whiskers and virtually NO DRAG. A single pass of the razor in the direction of the hair growth was sufficient to make a perfect depilation. Getting under the nose and around the mouth was quite easy and left no patches. A quick rinse of my face with cool water and pat dry with a towel....excellent shave. At no point did I find the razor clogging with the 5 day stubble, something I struggle with when using modern disposables with multi-blade configurations. Forty-eight hours laterr I was exhibiting a little stubble. Excellent. I now have 7 shaves on this same blade over the last 12 days. The blade is not noticibly any less sharp, nor dragging across my face. Three shaves off a high end disposable blade and my face feels raw and abused. Face it (HA! Get it?) This is a great entry level double edged razor, and after initial purchase, replacement blades are 50 cents each or lower in bulk, all while lasting longer than disposable plastics. I figure I'll be paying a nickel a shave on replacement blades for years to come.
