This is a great deal on a great knife. It is a bit long for EDC but, with a slight modification of the sheath, it works well as a horizontal carry across the small of the back. As beautiful as it is sharp, this knife will be a real show-piece should you decide it is just too good looking for personal protection and display it. I consider this to be an excellent addition to my small collection, beautiful enough for display but rugged enough for hard use. Columbia River hit a home run with this blade, 20 years ago (US Army, 5th SFG) I would have liked to carry this on missions.

knife made for serious business

I bought this knife for use in the combat theatre. It is definitely not for use in opening boxes, cans etc. It is for the very serious business engaging at close quarters. It has a solid weigth, well balanced, and seems to be nothing but edge. My only complaint is that the scabbard doesn't feel as if it would hold the blade if jarred too much. It would have been better if there was a notch or detent to secure it until needed.

CRKT Shinbu

As a dedicated knife nut I can say that this is a truly beautiful knife. I also have it's big brother. What do I use it for? Mostly I just enjoy the knowledge that I have a work of art. I have handmades, custom and one of a kind as well as first production runs. I belive that this knife, if asked, could save my life. Would I recommend this Knife as a tool to be used in combat? Not really. I am a former Special Forces weapons specialist, Vietnam. Packing a knife of this size might be a bit much, but the mission dictates the tool. If the goal is to intimidate the opponent this knife will do a good job!

Samurai Knife

The CRKT Shinbu came extremely sharp out of the box. The handle alone is a good enough reason to purchase the knife. The presentation box is nice, though it is quite lightweight. The sheath is quite secure; however I would say it is not strong enough for inverted carry positions. Great feel in the hand. The blade requires maintenance and is therefore something you should realize before you purchase the knife.

Is it just me?

I bought this after reading many positive reviews. Yes, its sharp. Yes, it has a great handle. Yes, the blade is scary. BUT the finishing grind was rather poor. There were noticeable grinding inconsistencies that varied the thickness of the blade near the edge. You can see and feel the variation of the thickness. I know this was hand finished, but I don't think it should be that bad. So I returned it and got a replacement... Even worse. Yes, this grind imperfection probably will not hinder the performance of the blade, but for $200+ knife its a no-go for me. I'm just surprised that nobody mentioned this. Maybe its just me.

blade is good. but cumbersome to thrust. handle is extremely **. hardened linen hurts my hand. so i get rid of the linen. to my surprise, the ray skin underneath is not even wrapping the handle. instead it is just two pieces of ray skin glued to the left and right side of the handle. really a low quality imitation of japanese tanto without much attention to detail. not at all as someone boasts that it is the 'modern tanto'. by the way the sheath is impossible to carry unless you buy a tech lock.
