Don't know where my original Bird & Trout knife disappeared many years ago. I think "Marble's" was the maker. This Cold Steel version is a combination of simplicity but functionality taken to the level of art. Its hanging from the sturdy Snaps itself out/Snaps itself in neck-sheathe under my shirt now. Knife Centre is a very professional outfit to do business with.
Don't do much trout fishing but a lot of bird hunting. Works great on birds, no more laying down a knife, just to pick it back up. Knife hangs on my little finger. Stays sharp, easy to use.
i use the bird and trout knife for just that. pheasants, quail, ducks and small game. delivery was swift and it came ready to use right outta the box. the finger ring is great especially when field dressing your game.
THis is a great little lightweight specialty knife. It came razor sharp out of the pack. WHen the handle ring is placed around the little finger it becomes instantly usable, user friendly and easily clasped in the palm. I have used it a couple of times in the field to gut fish for which it did a great job, and i have used it on domestic fowl, with equal satisfaction. THe ability to dangle it off the finger when not required then swing it back into action instantly instaead of having to look under feathers and viscera as for usual used knives is priceless. The sheath holds it firmly and when hung around the neck keeps it instantly available with no discomfort. It won't replace my belt knife, but for those times when i have forgotten the belt knife, this little wonder comes in very handy. THe one piece stainless unit appears well made and perfect for what it is. WHile the sheath seems solid enough and certainly holds the knife firmly in place, its longevity remains to be tested. If it turns out short lived, it will be easy enough to custom make a similar sheath out of any number of materials. I am happy to give it 8/10.
Blade comes extremely sharp! Material is very sturdy and strong. I have used this first to slice through the skin of a large rattle snake to gut and it was more than easy. Although I have not used it to debone and make intricate cuts on any type of bird yet, the blade itself is the perfect size for those cuts that require finesse. Overall great product. The sheath comes fairly stiff and is hard to tell how far the knife goes into it after taking it out. Give it a good push the first couple times to break that sheath in because if the knife is in the sheath completely it is very snug and will not fall out even if vigorously shaken.
