11 Years And Counting!

A Spyderco Double Stuff/medium and fine ceramic do the edge just fine. Lose the O rings and use a wrap of 90mph/Electric Boat (submarine) Green/ tape or Gorilla Tape for safer retention-and less noticeable by someone handling what you want him to think is a regular cane! I've abused the blade and reproduced a shaving edge after killing 2 adult water moccasin snakes on a gravel walkway and one fast Eastern diamond back rattlesnake on brick. I get along fine with this cane despite having no feeling in one leg from the knee down. The dang VA should have bought it for me, ha ha! Hopefully yours will work as well for you!

The blade is excellent and the aluminum shaft is quite sturdy. So far, it is a fully functional sword cane. However, as stated by others, the O ring retention is somewhat poor--one ring snapped after my third time unsheathing--but replaceable. All in all though, extremely satisfied with my purchase ^^

Feels very solid and sturdy, I use it as a cane every day. Does not wobble in the slide and are not skidding with the rubber tip against any surface. It is a little heavy but it has to be that considering the quality and thickness of the metal. I also like that the whole cane is made with a metal tube. Can probably be used as a baton if needed. The blade is not razor blade sharp, like some revues stated, but it is sharp. The tip on the sword edge is very sharp! Be careful when adjusting tour personal height of the sword so you don't take of to much and the cane become to short for you. I had no problems in doing this because I took it in intervals a bit at a time. Nice feeling to have this sword cane as a daily companion, hopefully never needed to be used in self defense.

I've had my Cold Steel Sword Cane for a little over 2 years now and don't leave homer without, it even if if my sciatica or arthritic back is acting up or not ,it just common sense never show your cards till go. My Cold-Steel Sword Cane blade I can shave with and take care of other business if necessary.I also found that the O rings can be be more a nuisance than help,so I also chose to use the tape after a couple of O-ring fails,just try it a wing at a time till you find your sweet spot and it works perfectly.It is definitely not a toy ,just watch some YouTube videos and learn the easy way or be obstinate as I am and be a Blood donor which by the way waste a lot of blood..A lot also to learn on YouTube about cane fighting as an art to its-self and swordsmanship ,leverage etc .Magick is the unexpected .

Pretty close to awesome

I am disabled by back problems and legitimately use a cane. I always wanted a sword cane, and when I finally had a reason to get one I jumped at the chance. This item did not disappoint! The sword itself came VERY sharp, surprisingly sharp, and is made out of good carbon steel. Actually wielding it is a little awkward, not quite enough weight in the handle, but, it's a cane, so I think it would be rather difficult to make it handle like a real sword. It is still possible to make nice cuts, although it is more of a stabber than a slicer being so thin. It does appear to be an innocent cane, as long as nobody else picks it up. It's weight is definitely an indicator that something about it is unusual, but I don't find it too heavy to use. It actually creates a nice pendulum effect, and at least for me does not create any undue fatigue. It was a bit too long, but there was plenty of room to cut a couple of inches off the tube with a regular hacksaw. The shaft also doubles as a blunt weapon for parries and blocks and is quite sturdy. The rubber tip does not stand up to regular use, but I had no trouble ordering a regular rubber cane tip in the proper size. It's a little wider than the ones I generally found in stores, but the internet provided. The two rubber O rings that keep the sword friction fit onto the shaft broke rather quickly, but Cold Steel was quick to replace them at no charge and I alleviated the problem by using a touch of fluoronated grease. Not too much, or it will slide too easily out of the shaft. All in all I find the price very fair for the quality. It is not fancy looking, but is very utilitarian which is more important to me as a daily user.

An amazing item in many ways!

I was surprised and so happy with this sword cane. The fit, finish, quality, sleek design, ease of withdrawl and versatility were all far beyond my expectations. The blade is razor sharp and light weight but tough and easily controllable. In a tight spot the whole thing assembled would make a heck of a club! Then draw and do the sword work. Proud to own it, and NOBODY would ever suspect anything out of the ordinary unless you show them. An excellent find, I highly recommend it.

I love my Cold Steal Sword Cane and take it everywhere I go! I'm a disabled X Marine (68 years old) with a walking problem so, I just scream "Here I am thugs, come steel my money!" ...And in Feb of this year, that's exactly what one tried to do! It happened in broad daylight on Main St. here in my home town. I fought the bastard off (as best I could) until passers by came to my assistance. If a big clown like that tries it again, he'll be in for one hell of a surprise! Had to saw mine down about 2 inches and replace the rubber tip but, not a problem. I noticed a bad rattle but fixed it using cotton balls super saturated with Vasoline. It is now absolutely quiet and completely stealthy. I highly recomend this product as both a heavy duty walking stick and weapon combo. Love it.....

HD Sword Cane

I use the cane when I go for walks on trails. It helps me climb minor inclines. I also use it to do stretches and squats while I walk. I like the size a weight of it. So far the two rubber rings are holding up pretty good. Ultimately it is my first line of defense if I am attacked by unleashed stray dogs however, I hope I never have to use it.

STURDY, UNOBTRUSIVE, WELL MADE

I've been researching this weapon for some time, reading every review that I could find. I got the cane yesterday and was nonetheless pretty amazed, first at the weight, then at the quality of the blade and the secure way it's attached to the handle, and finally at the overall appearance that doesn't yell "look at me, I have a sword!" Yes, there's a chemical smell from the preservative used, but some airing out and vigorous cleaning took care of that. The shaft is heavy and capable of being an effective bludgeon while the blade is deployed. This monster of a cane will easily support my weight and carry a deadly surprise for any assailant. I'm pleased as punch.

This is a very robust piece of gear. You might be able to overcome any odds by just using it as a club. The sword is very well made, and sharp, and any would-be attacker would be in for a very nasty unexpected surprise indeed. I keep mine beside the dog's leash, and when we go for a walk I probably look like a defenseless older man with a cane - Oh boy, what an error of judgement that could be. I highly recommend it.

EDC cane

The cane is my EDC! I have used one of these for 4 years. Had a problem which I expected. Cold steel sent me another. Guaranteed for life, of course inspection is done for abuse. I need a cane this is real. Excellent! Attractive as a cane alone. For the price this cannot be beaten. Wanted to have some self defense, can't fight anymore. Retired Marine! Blade is full shank into the handle. Excellent steel, 1055C for most swords to use. Height measure cut is easy. Directions come with the sword.

It is amazing well constructed with functionality as both a very good cane coupled with a fine blade. It does not rattle and it is very easy to deploy. I used it as my day to day cane. Cold steel 88SCFD Cane

Problem knee sometimes, due to arthritis ... the cane is solid and useful ... easy to trim length with a simple pipe cutter. To people complaining about the sword rattling in scabbard, problem easily solved by adding a piece of that pipe wrap used for hot water pipes ... just trim the foam to fit the point of the sword. Adding a smidjin of Vaseline to the two O rings will insure easy removal of sword from scabbard and insure long use of the O rings ... An attack from a big dog as I was passing in front of a property was cut short without hurting the animal seriously ... just a prick and the dog fled.

Great build quality, this is no decorative junk. Like the blade profile; sharp and thick. This is a heavy piece. Keep the o rings lubed, and they should be fine. Going to wrap the handle with some pistol grip tape, if I can keep it discrete.

Cold Steel at it's best

Cold Steel has one of the best blade out there. I got mines in today it took a week and a half to get here. And this sword is awesome. Came in brand new fresh out of the box, nicely polished, very sharp, lightweight, easy to handle, O ring fittings are tight and holds well no movement or rattling, good steel, well oiled the oil was very fumy can be cleaned off. Awesomely made. No complaints here. I got myself a good one I'll be adding this to my private collection. In CA you can legally own a sword cane but must be kept at home, you don't want to carry this around and get caught with it or show it to the wrong people. You can own one as a private collection. I highly recommend it, affordable this is much better than getting a $400 katana or $300 saber. This is one of the best swords that money can buy, and worth every dollar. Watch out for the O rings they can come off there's been complaints about it go to a hardware store like Home Depot and buy some extras. I am satisfied with my purchase and will buy from knifecenter again, also will buy another Cold Steel they have the best blades.

Superb product

I have a game leg after vascular surgery and, although I live in a nice area, I am a 65 year-old female and, thus, might appear potentially vulnerable to those who might consider to do me ill. But with this cane I am neither indefensible nor vulnerable. The steel feels quite sturdy, with a bit of flex and I was greeted with the fragrance of fresh machine oil as I drew the blade from the cane/scabbard. The blade has a nice, sharp edge for it's full-length and is double-edged for the last eight inches. The cane itself feels quite sturdy and would serve as a weapon itself, should a non-lethal situation present itself. Otherwise, I have a little secret and a nice cane to support me. The purchase was problem-free, shipping was reasonably priced and extremely rapid. Staff are very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Both this item and this company have my highest recommendation.

Great Cane

Very strong and sturdy. Just twist and pull and out comes the sword. You can use this as a function cane or self defense both the sword and the can since the cane is just as sturdy. Instead of carrying a Zatoichi with me on hikes and risk being confronted I will just carry the cane and noone will be the wiser.

HD sword cane

Have bad knees and needed not just a solid cane, but wanted something that could also serve as a protective device if needed. Cane is definitely solid/strong and also serves very nicely as an edged weapon as well. Well finished cane, steel blade is nicely polished and indeed sharp where it should be sharp. Grip/handle comfortable and able to attach cord to it for times when both hands are needed, very convenient to use. Excellent value in all respects. If you need a cane that aids in walking and to protect you as well, this is the cane.

Opened the box and the cane looked very good. When I pulled the sword out I was really impressed: the blade was polished and sharp. I looked at the o-rings and they were in good shape, I put a little anhydrous lanolin on them for protection against wear. Sharpened the blade. Then I cut off about an inch from the bottom of the cane so it was comfortable for me. This is a quality product, good to have in case you need it for self preservation. After a Year of Use

Well, I was already using this a year, then saw a leg surgery for two broken bones and a split ankle, and an eight inch titanium plate put in my leg for, yep, a simple fall at home from a medicine reaction and blackout. The cane really became even more vital after the crutches could be set aside. My 6', 300 lb, already large frame body has had no problem leaning on it, the handle is great for that. The original SINGLE WRAP OF GORILLA TAPE, replacing the O rings, has held up just fine. I like to be proactive, not wait for the repair need to happen. The double edge has remained razor sharp, despite my apparent need to touch up edges already well honed, ha ha! During the recovery, all the heavy leaning to the cane was done with no problems at all, despite the ankle's unsteadiness. I suppose that if I were to change anything at all, I would make the same shape handle, but with an all stainless steel material. Great product from Cold Steel, once again!

Just got mine in today, very nice. The blade is secured soundly by rubber seals, you have to give a good tug to get out the blade. It looks just like a cheap old cane you'd get from a pharmacy, but that is a GOOD thing. I'm going to serrate the top back blade for added cutting power. :)

Great backup for concealed carry actually 2 weapons in one, bludgeon and sword . Great qualaty and sharp. A litle heavy.Thats good and bad. As far as a liner goes and nicking the blade how mwny times are you reaaly going to pull this out . Be careful with this and it should last years. As far as O rings ripping a little oil on the inside of the tube makes it verry easy to draw, Blade could use a dark finish to hide it better. Tried to blue it but would not take must be plated or something .

First impressions

I bought this as I have severe back and hip problems and already it’s been a big help. I’ve always trusted Cold Steel and their reputation for reliability and durability and from what I’ve been able to see thus far is that this project is no exception I have no doubts that this can will probably outlast me and that in the event that I ever do need to use the sword in combat (God forbid) I have no doubts in its ability to hold up and be just as good if not better than any of the other swords I already own. Truth be told I’m already contemplating buying more to be used as gifts for those I know who could benefit. I give 5 stars but I can already tell it deserves far more than that.

Perfect Defense Accessory!

I live in a tough rural area that includes an abnormally high number of ex-cons, and not the one-timers! Given my age and deteriorated physical condition from old injuries, i need something that provides effective yet subtle protection, and this item is just perfect. The cane is too long for me but can be easily shortened by about 5", which means that it is just about a universal fit. The hand meets the shaft neatly without any sign or fitting that indicates it comes apart - great! The blade is a substantial piece of work that will survive any kind of 'defense work' you may be forced to undertake. It has a decently sharp full-length lower edge with a substantial length of the upper edge, although i will sharpen both sides to a razor+ capability which the quality of the steel should permit. The shaft is quite heavy and would let you put up a good show on its own, but when combined with the lethal and smooth action if the sword, you should be able to defeat any single opponent - opposing firearms or flamethrower excepted! A knife-wielding attacker would be suicidal to continue once he saw your set-up. It IS heavy, so you should practice unsheathing, stance, and the all-important lunge repeatedly until it is second nature and you have the weight working for you, not inhibiting your moves. Best Cane Sword available / Absolute Quality

I just received the Cold Steel Sword Cane, Heavy Duty, CS-88SCFD as a gift today from a friend that knew I have been looking at it for awhile now. This sword cane is flawless both as a cane and as a sword. It does not rattle like most sword canes do, It is the definition of discrete as you can not tell looking at it that it is really a sword. it is solid and will easily support my weight (and I'm not a small guy) Some comments say that it has a strong pungent smell at first, Cold Steel has apparently fixed this issue other than a light coat of oil on the blade that wiped right off with a rag the blade was perfect, razor sharp and did NOT have a bad smell at all! The fact that I got this as a gift has entirely made my Christmas this year!! I still plan on buying one as I was going to anyway, but now I plan on giving it to someone else that needs one and maybe it will make their day just as it has mine!!

Don't look anywhere else

This is a great piece. A few customizations made it excellent. I am 6'4" 255 and the size of this cane is perfect. It is solid and sturdy without standing out as a personal defense unit. It is hefty (a plus). Like some other suggestions I put a rubber sleeve in the tube (shower basin liner at Lowe's $5.00)to protect the blade. I use "door ease" on the o-rings,available at auto parts stores, and after much practice I still have not torn a seal. Although I never had a rattle issue I did install a piece of foam from the kids "swimming noodles" (free)in the bottom to seat the blade. I also removed the rubber tip (a little too slippery when wet)with a razor and installed a softer one from the local drug store ($3.00). I would buy this again in a heartbeat.

Cold Steel Sword Cane - Top Quality Blade

Being from Cold Steel this, like all their products, is top quality and good value. Take a look at the Youtube videos of this sword blade being tested. It is very sharp and very sturdy. The sword cane arrived a few inches to long for me (I am 5' 7") and it was an easy fix. You can pry off the rubber end cap and trim the sheath shorter. However, measure carefully as to not trim the sheath shorter than the blade! A hack saw did the job in about 5 minutes and I dressed up The end with a file. Pry the rubber end cape off carefully with a screwdriver. It can be glued onto the new shortened sheath. I used epoxy. A US Quarter (coin) was put in the rubber cap first so the cane end would never cut its way through the rubber end cap. The cane has a lanyard loop hole in the handle. I added a short section of black 550 cord. The cane does not have a cross guard. If one struck a solid object ones hand could slip forward onto the sharp edge. The nylon loop I added prevents this as long as you put you fingers/hand through it when gripping the handle. . Note: Make sure a sword cane is legal to use in your state!

Don't particularly need a cane to walk, but this will support my 280 lbs no problem. Was able to cut 3-1/4" off if the bottom and re-tip easily. As of Sept 1, 2017 it's perfectly legal in TX......Thank you Gov. Abbott!!

Not just a cane!

First, for the price, this is an excellent tool. The blade is sharp and stout. It does not in any way feel cheap, flimsy or poorly made. It does not rattle around in the cane, and the release is perfect, meaning that it requires a sharp tug and that gives me peace of mind that the blade will not accidentally slip out of the cane making it much more safe and ultimately usable. Bottom line is this actually works as a cane capable of fully supporting a man and like I said the sword is excellent for the price.

Definitely Heavy Duty

I tore my meniscus on a backpacking trip and I need a cane to get around until I have it surgically repaired. I thought this would be a good excuse to get a sword cane, but since I'm actually using it, I thought I'd get one that's actually made for everyday use, not just a pretty wall decoration. Since I weigh about 300 pounds and I put as much as if not more than half my weight into the cane when I stand up, it really needs to be sturdy. This model from cold steel definitely fits the bill. It holds its edge, too.

Actually supports your body weight!

Many products of this nature are merely wall hangers and as such I question their actual value. In what context or in what collection would that product likely be displayed? Perhaps as toys??? Well this cane is just right for one who desires or needs some extra support to their stride. The height is better than most and it is completely solid. I've not deployed the blade many times, so complaints of rattling don't apply to me. While the carbon steel makeup of the blade has not yet been an issue, I do wonder why stainless was not used. Overall I am quite pleased.

This cane is sharp looking, no pun intended. It's fully functional as an every day cane. The 37.5" length is perfect for taller people. The blade is high grade, and very sharp. Comes well oiled. I wiped off some of the extra oil. My one and only concern is that the cane has a very distinctive look. A well trained law officer might know what it really is. I plan on custom painting it, and wrapping the handle with leather. It has a lanyard hole also, making it easier to keep hold of. You could use it just as a large bottom, without even needing to deploy the blade. Five Stars. This one's a keeper...

Cold Steel Heavy Duty Sword Cane

Great cane! After all the reviews on the cold steel heavy duty sword cane, after I received it as a Christmas gift, I was still surprised and pleased with the look and quality of this product. I found that I was able to adapt to the different handle from my old cane which has the T handle. It is a little bit heavier than your normal standard wooden cane. But if you know how to walk with a cane properly you will adjust to the weight just fine. It does rattle a little bit if you hit the tip on the ground at an angle otherwise it's as quiet as can be. I did make some modifications which were suggested by many previous reviewers. Such as I cut it down to 35 in because of my short Heights. I changed the tip to a drugstore rubber tip. And best of all I double lined it with shower curtain rod liner. That made all the difference in the world and no more rattling or blade rubbing against the inside of the shaft while sheathing and unsheathing. The sword could not be any better than what it is. Very sharp tip. Sharp blade but not razor sharp. I am retired military and feel confident that this sword will protect me if ever need be. I pray I never have to use it!!! This product is top quality all the way around. You will not find anything better, especially for the price. But then again it's made by Cold Steel and I wouldn't expect anything different. With the arthritis being in my lower back and hips this came really supports me and gives me my three-legged support. I highly recommend this product to anyone and everyone.

MORE than adequate for any need!

Very high quality finish and execution (pardon the pun!) The blade is so sharp on arrival it shaved hair off the top of my arm with lightest touch! I believe this blade will deter or shred anyone that is on the wrong side of it. Only thing I would change would be to install a polypropylene guide inside the tube for the blade. Highly recommended!

'Great power & great responsibility'

Shipped across country to me with no problems. I'm old but, not too old to use this product for my exercise walking and hiking when and where appropriate. Until then it will be a nice addition to my cane collection. I'm about 5'5, 255lbs (on a diet). It's sharp but not too sharp. Heavy duty and rugged but not overly heavy. Robust 420 Steel Sword part does not rattle in the tough aluminum shaft due to the quality construction and dual rubber O'rings... nice touch. The substantial rubber tip on the end of the aluminum shaft is excellent. For me it is perfect in every way. The strong cane handle even has a small hole to add a lanyard in the future. Thank You!

Saved My Life

I was an out patient at a Baltimore Hospital when I left my apartment in the evening to get a bottle of water and some dinner. The next thing I knew two young men about six feet tall and 180 pounds were coming up behind me fast. I back up against a wall and one of them shoved me hard against it and demanded my money. I dropped my wallet on the side walk. as the man in shorts bent over to pick it up I swung my cane as hard as I could at his knee. I hit about an inch under it, and you could hear a load cracking sound for a block away. His friend looked puzzled at him as he felled to the ground, but even more puzzled when I brought the cane hard into his crouch. He rolled back onto the ground with both hands holding his privates. I picked up my wallet, and went back to my apartment, Thanking my wife for buying me this fine cane. I have had no problems with this cane at all. It provides great support. Looks good. Maybe a little heavy, but I well live with that.

Line the tube !

Hi folks, I had the misfortune of needing to use this wonderful tool when a few thuggish miscreants felt thier numbers were in thier favor. The only thing I said was "You don't have to do this". I either slapped thier mother or looked too soft. (Mama wasn't there) So I had no choice. Since my father finished service in Korea he taught us self defense and made sure we went to good schools and knew what and how to do. The sword cut. The handle bashed and as hard as it was to do. It broke after some very effective use. (That took alot to do) Thier scars and all; the weapon works. If you feel the sword is too dull; the weapon works. So sharpen it. It took alot to break that handle. Extreme circumstances made it break. Smell will go away. Cold Steel is reliable and worth the money. Most policemen won't bother you for walking with a cane. A product called FiberFix and some epoxy fixed the break. As far as dulling the blade. If you buy a thing called a" SHOWER CURTAIN ROD LINER" it will line the inside of the tube in plastic. If you do it right. It will deaden any noise the sword makes inside the cane. The tube can be touched up or repainted with Rustoleum. (Pink or lavender for the ladies.) Can't go wrong with cold steel. And the price is great at knife center.

I purchased my Heavy Duty Sword Cane from Cold Steel 5 yrs ago just before my back surgery. After surgery I needed a walking cane for balance and support but I also desired having a concealed weapon I could trust in a life or death situation...as there are those who take advantage of disabled individuals. I carry a concealed weapons permit so this cane is legal for me to carry and use if necessary to protect my life or the life of another. Cold Steel has made an excellent product in this sword cane. It's sturdy, reliable, sharp, easily deployed, and completely concealed. I have no fear when carrying this sword cane along with my pistol...this way I have a choice of what weapon to deploy and when. shaft liner

If you are worried about blade getting nicked in shaft, jus slip in a bathroom curtain rod cover (available for a couple bucks at any hardware or bed/bath store -- cut to right length to not interfeer with handle when inserted). Put a cork or piece of foam inside in bottom inside liner to hold it in place, and your problem will be solved!!

Additional Notes - Cold Steel Heavy Duty Sword Cane

HI: Now that I have been using my Cold Steel Heavy Duty Sword Cane for several weeks I thought I should add a few additional notes to the review I posted on 25 June right after I received it. In that review I explained how to determine your individual cane length and how to shorten the sword cane if it is too long for you. Since then I have made a couple of other modifications which I think are worth mentioning. Others have noted that the sharp edges of the sword rub against the inside of the aluminum shaft with a metal-on-metal sound when the sword is drawn or replaced. This may not be too important. You may like the sound and the steel sword is harder than the aluminum shaft so the sharp edges are unlikely to be much dulled by rubbing against it. However, if you, like me, prefer a "stealth" draw which cannot compromise the edges of the razor-sharp sword there is an easy and inexpensive way to line the shaft with plastic. Go to the bathroom section of Home Depot or a similar store and buy a length of shower curtain rod cover. It is a thin hard plastic tube split along one edge so it can be compressed to fit into the cane shaft. It will cost about $3.50 and will be more than twice as long as you will need. Insert the tube into the shaft until it rests against the rubber plug at the base of the shaft. Use a pencil to mark where the tube comes out of the top of the shaft. Now pull the tube two inches out of the shaft and mark it again. The second mark should be exactly two inches below the first. Cut the tube cleanly at that second mark with a razor or other very sharp knife. Push the cut tube down into the shaft until it rests against the rubber plug again. The end of the tube will now be two inches below the top of the shaft. This is necessary to clear the two hard O-rings which are set into the lower part of the sword handle just above the blade. The tube will expand against the inside of the shaft and friction will keep it in place. Now the sword will go in and out almost silently with no metal sound. I also added a lanyard to the cane handle. This is easy because there is a hole in the handle just big enough for parachute cord to go through (if the end is first tapered) You can buy lanyards on the Internet but I just used about 2 1./2 feet of black paracord, knotted it to form a wrist loop and trimmed the excess. It looks and works fine and is invaluable when two hands are needed to accomplish a task (like counting change) and you don't want to bother putting the cane down or leaning it somewhere. THREE YEARS AND STILL TOPNOTCH!

I just wanted to update, it has been three years. Like I said before, I took the O rings off right away, put a single wrap tightly in their place of GORILLA TAPE. Still takes a yank or running start to withdraw,just as I want, because the canes have occasionally been places they may not quite have been, um, welcome, but the Glock 20 and pre-2005 Ruger Vaquero with Buffalo Bore .45 LC +P had to stay in the truck.(check THAT out, it'll stop a truck!) The draw has to be intentional, the scabbard can be a great counter or block-and I prefer the grip like a dagger, so if need be I could backslash. Still all the parts are holding up fine-and a good thrust or strike can be done with it as a blunt cane.The edge is just a breeze to touch up-nothing's as sharp as just after honing freshly. I use them all the time,I was a hit and run victim with skull fractures. I worked with inmates for yrs and was a range instructor and recovery agent, so I have need to be armed at sometimes the least places you'd think of having an encounter. If you have troubles drawing the blade, and are able,even if disabled, start wrist rolls and short curls with a weight-roll all the way to the fingertips slowly and back-you'll be there in no time! Just don't ask me how to lose the chemical smell inside the shaft-I'll just point the open end towards the opponent! Stay Safe, Stay Armed!

Hello, just got my cane and was impressed. The blade is ok, nice length, nice edge and sturdy. Hope I don't need to use it but it'll be there if I do. Cane itself is 37.5 in - same as old cane but heavier than my old cane(which I paid $29.95 for n have used it for years) and the shaft is 1 inch, old one is 3/4 in, all in all I like that feel, I've spent far more on lesser quality canes. Think a Sharisaya(neat but not actually stealthy) type cane/walking stick, they are horrible to get the blade out. On to address a few issues and some remedies/preventive maint. As far as the plastic tip goes, am thinkin a 1 inch crutch tip with a 1 in washer inside(to prevent metal cane shaft cutting through it) no more possible slippage n cheap fix. Don't want the blade rattling and getting dull so the idea for shower curtain rod cover(great idea) is cheap, doable and easy, am going to do it also right away. Now the hand grip, my old one is 4.5 inches you can wrap your fingers around, CS cane is 4 in of which 1.5 in is directly above the shaft so you can't wrap your fingers around it, making it only 2.5 in wrappable(?). It still works for me but took a little getting used to. An idea for Cold Steel, make it a T handle, would work great n get good wrappage(?). To camouflage it I'm thinking blue or purple swirls pattern on the shaft like my old cane and maybe a 4 point tip/bottom for winter slippage here in iLL and it could stand up by itself. Cold Steel keeps improving their products and I'll keep buying them. I also have their Dragon head cane. At 39.5 inches tall(a foot taller n you might be able to use it as a a crutch) I need to grow or something and it's really rough on the hand. Hack saw n file could fix all that. Kinda like walking with a 2 X 4 and very intimidating. Will definitely be coming back for more at KnifeCenter.com. Take Care.

If you're one of the folks thinking of sending it back because it's too hard to pull, then please read this. Mine didn't come direct from Cold Steel and didn't have directions for care in the box. I degreased it with alcohol (no more smell) but didn't know to do more. After it sat for a week (dry) in a warm house I had to stand on the handle and pull the shaft with both hands to loosen it. Started trying other O-rings thinking I'd get a better fit. Nothing worked. Finally called the factory. They were totally helpful and friendly. Sent me new "D"-rings (doesn't take O-rings) and directions for care and told me how to replace them (Clean ring grooves with acetone or nail polish remover, then clean them with alcohol, squeeze new rings to elongate so to avoid the cutting edge, install into grooves round side up, then spray lightly with silicone spray. Now it's perfect. Love it.

Great cane/sword

This is a well made cane/sword, I've read other reviews where people say that the O-rings that hold the sword in broke after only a couple of times pulling the sword out and that it makes noise when you use it as a cane as the sword hits the inside of the cane tube. The funny thing is I haven't had any of those problems with it, so I really don't have anything bad about it. I'm very happy with it, one thing tho yes it is on the heavy side but to me thats a plus as one can use it to hit with it and know when you land the blow that it has the weight to stop someone if you hit him in the right place with out having to pull the sword out.

Heavy, tough, reliable, thrusts AND cuts!

If you've bought sword canes in the past only to find out that you ended up with a flimsy piece of trash barely suitable for display and not at all for personal defense, this is the product for you! The CS heavy duty sword cane doesn't even LOOK like a weapon, but rather like a piece of medical equipment. There is no shiny chrome release button or dividing separator partway down the shaft to yell "Bust me, I have a sword!" When you pop the blade out, which is securely held in place by two O-rings, you'll see that the 1/4" thick polished blade is combat ready, sharpened on the swedge and the full edge, plus it has a needle sharp tip. It will slash, cut and stab equally well. Additionally, the long tang is secured to the Grivory handle with three stout steel pins. It'll stand up0 to the abuse of combat! The shaft, lacquered and polished thick aluminum, will act as a bludgeon or parrying device. There's a rubber tip at the end, completing the medical appearance. When Cold Steel says "heavy duty" that's just what they mean. I cannot think of any negative observations. This is my first "non cheapie" sword cane, and I'm more than just well pleased; I'm amazed and delighted. If you buy one of these monsters, I know you will be as well.

Excellent sword cane. It appears the complaints below have been adressed. I just got one of these I cut mine down with a hack saw. The tip has a long insert that the tip of the blade sits in when sheathed. remove the rubber foot before you size it. clip the rubber insert and glue it back on.The D rings are perfect. Excellent producr. Thank you knife center.

I recently lost a leg due to a motorcycle accident, and I am now learning to use a prosthetic leg. We have recently had attacks on elderly and disabled people in my community, and I was very worried about being out by myself and what I would do if I was attacked. Being too tall for me at 37-1/2", I wrapped a single layer of Scotch Heavy Duty Packing Tape around the area to be cut so the pipe cutter rollers wouldn't scuff up the finish, then I took 3" off the top, chamfered and polished the inside of the rim so the two rubber O-rings on the handle would slide in smoothly. I also cut 3" off the top of the rubber insert that goes up inside the bottom of the shaft that houses the tip of the sword, which keeps it from rattling. I put a 7" long x 1" i.d. high density NPVC foam tubing grip over the shaft just under the handle so the shaft can easily be held and used as a club. I used a 1-1/2" stainless steel "D" ring shackle through the factory lanyard hole to hold a decorative, solid stainless steel snake Triquatra pendant and a functional nylon lanyard. I drilled a hole and threaded a glass breaker into the end of the handle that can perform multiple functions. I saved it from an old, broken OTF automatic knife. I also replaced the rubber ferrule that came with the cane with one that is heavy duty and heavier than the one that originally came on the cane. If I were able to upload a photo of the finished cane, I would have, but there is no option to upload photos.

A Great, Timely and Most Excellent Aid and Urban Survival Tool!

I bought this a few years after having a need back in 2006-I bought the excellent earlier, triangular blade sword cane then. I lived with it night and day following a stroke-by-migraine. I was very happy to have that tool to level the playing field then. I healed, and had often wished I had a double edged one too. I got this one about a year or so ago. I read all about the O-ring complaints and all, and I easily fixed that problem with the first item in all tool kits-Gorilla Tape! One wrap is all it took, and since being hit in my truck by another at 80mph, I now have a real great cane and a real edge on defense. If you think of any other way to carry an excellent, super sharp and a genuine combat sword in broad daylight better than this-let me know!

Two years and still great

I've had mine for over 2 years, I've wore out the tip and better figure a new one before the ice and snow up in Canada. I live in bear country in the north, l had another bear charge me this summer again, l also have cougars around coyotes (no big deal them) Anyway considering the dog put the run on the bear this cane is a great equalizer if it wasn't close. Excellent Product

The first most obvious thing I noticed was just how much it looks like a genuine, off the shelf, cane. You would never know that it was a very good self defense weapon. As far as quality, I don't think that you could find a better one. The blade is very sharp and the high carbon steel means that it's very strong. I was actually surprised as to how thick the blade is, not like those $20 cane swords that are thin and flimsy. Overall, it's a great buy.

Great gift for your old man

Got the Cold Steel Heavy Duty Sword Cane for my father who goes on walks with his dog twice a day. He would always take a walking stick just in case of snakes, other animals, or dogs. I really wanted him to have some real protection other than a stick. He is going to be 74 and just doesn’t have the strength anymore to truly use a walking stick for protection. You Will Not Regret Buying this!

Came combat ready edge. It is very sharp on both edges. Only required a few strokes on the butcher's steel to make it shave-able sharp. View the Utube review for the best review available for it's cutting power and piercing ability. Only negative issues are the odor of the preservative coating the blade and it's residue inside the aluminum sheath, and the rubber foot fitted to the bottom is very durable, but for use as a walking assist can, slippery on flooring. I will fix that issue by replacing it with a standard cane foot made of a softer material. I use this as a daily cane, a little heavy, but well worth it for the piece of mind it brings. Thank you Cold Steel, for an outstanding product!

I don't see how it could be improved

As a 2nd degree black belt in a style that has two sword katas I have seen and used a lot of swords over the past 38 years with most being little more than junk or wall decoration. This cold steel cane sword is the real deal. I have been in law enforcement for 23 years and would not hesitate to take this weapon into harms way. Warning, the preserving oil the blade is shipped with STINKS !!! After inspecting the sword, drawing it a few times and getting a feel for it I put it away as someone knocked on the door. It was my friend and when he came into the room where the sword was in he asked if I had just got a cat.

Cold Steel Heavy Duty Sword Cane

I have always wanted sword cane but could never justify it until, after a recent TIA, my doctors told me to use a cane while I was recovering. I looked over various sword canes on the Internet and found that they were just toys or fashion accessories. I needed one that would reliably support my full weight, with an effective sword (not just a short spike), easy to get into action and, very important, did not look like a weapon. The only one that matched my requirements was the Cold Steel Heavy Duty Sword Cane/ It was available from a number of vendors but Knife Center had the best price, under $100. Many of the toys and fashion accessories cost three times as much. I was delighted when it arrived. It is just as advertised, It looks just like an orthopedic cane with nothing to indicate that it is anything else. It is very strong and I do not hesitate to put my full weight on it. It does not rattle at all. The sword is the real thing, long, strong and razor sharp. I am very careful whenever I draw it. It is a very dangerous weapon. There is nothing of the toy about it. NOTE: I live in Florida and have a concealed weapons permit, which is necessary to legally carry a sword cane in this state. Like a handgun the sword must not be displayed in public except in an emergency. Next to a handgun, there is no doubt in my mind that this sword cane is the most effective weapon that can legally be carried concealed in public. It is evident that Cold Steel read the early reviews of this item and took steps to improve it. I have had no problems at all with the O-rings. Just lightly lubricate them when necessary. The sword is held firmly in the heavy aluminum shaft but draws easily if you twist sword and shaft in opposite directions as you pull the sword out. There is a rubber sleeve glued into the lower part of the shaft to prevent the sword from rattling. You cannot hear a thing when you shake it. At 37 1/2" the cane was 1 1/2" too long for me when I got it. My cane length is 36". It might be right for you if you are tall. To determine proper cane length stand up normally and put the rubber cane tip on the floor. The handle should come up to your wrist. I phoned Cold Steel and asked how to best shorten it. They told me to remove the rubber tip (it is glued on but can be worked off easily) and cut off as much as necessary from the lower shaft, then replace the tip. You can do it with a hack saw, but I had a machinist friend cut it with a band saw. It took only a few seconds. Don't worry about the rubber sleeve. Just cut right through it. Then go to your hardware store and buy a fender washer which will just fit into the rubber tip. When you replace the rubber tip you will find that the shaft is a little too small to hold it on firmly. Just wrap a few turns of scotch tape around the lower shaft to snug it up. The tip will cover the tape; it will not be visible. The fender washer will prevent the cut edge of the shaft from damaging the rubber tip. That's it. You will love it. Just don't whip it out in public unless you want to be arrested. This is the real thing. Phil .

Great cane for walking around light weight durable i had to cut the shaft myself to get the perfect length as required with almost every cane for myself but easy to do with a hacksaw Time required three minutes. I use this everyday for walks in my old age it's nice to have something to keep the dogs away unfortunately I had to use this once on the pit bull I believe it save my life! only downfall to the product is that it uses O rings to keep the shaft you to replace them if used every day once a month

Heavy Duty Is The Right Name

Some reviews that I read before buying this cane suggested that there were problems with the "O" rings, I have had none with mine. I have bad knees from an accident so do use a cane sometimes. I am 6' 4" and weight 281 lbs. If you need a cane that can take it, this is the one. I have a canceled carry firearms permit but am finding more and more I am comfortable going out with just my cane. I found that as shipped the cane was 1 1/2" too long for me and I was not crazy about the tip as it was plastic and slipped on hard surfaces. In 10 min. I cut the can to size and replaced the tip with a rubber one from the hardware store which I adhered with construction adhesive. From the box the blade is sharp enough to shave with, for real. If your considering such a product, don't hesitate on choosing this one.

Great tool

As a senior citizen living in these days of increasing lawlessness (including from our federal government), it helps to have something I can take on walks that will offset most threats. I looped a rawhide cord through the two holes and tied it in a knot. I slip my wrist through the cord which allows me to carry the cane easily. I don't really need a cane, but it's always at the ready for a quick up-thrust to the groin, then a few wack on the head. If worse comes to worst, the handy gadget inside can come into play. It's sturdy and looks cool.

Darn near perfect

I had read all of the past reviews and was prepared for what to expect; the rattle of the sword in the sheath, dried / broken o-rings, hard to pull the sword out and slippery cane tip.. What I received instead was darn near perfect. The o-rings are in great condition with a slight lubrication making it easy to remove and insert. (Give the handle a slight twist when removing and reinserting will make it very easy.) There is no rattle in the cane at all and I discovered why. I had to cut off about two inches from the bottom to get the best length for me. They have installed a short plastic sheath in the bottom to keep the sword tip from rattling around. The hard rubber tip seems to be okay, but I replaced it when I shortened the tube length. The tip is glued on, I think, and had to be replaced anyway. The sword itself is very sharp (can easily cut you) without being too sharp (the edge isn't easily chipped). The tube sheath is fairly thick walled and heavy enough to be used as a club. Like I said - darn near perfect.

I needed a substantial cane so I could be confident as I walk with my new prosthetic leg. This cane provides me that confidence. I also needed a sword cane with a blade that was truly a defense weapon and not just a trinket like most sword canes are. Hi great service, shipped early. As with 99% of them the O rings broke, contacted them and they send out 2 sets now, you can buy them at the local hardware. I suggest a variety pack so you have a choice to get one that fits right. I'm over 60 I need a cane for the rough ground (I live on a remote property in North Canada) and I have wild dogs, mostly pit bulls left by drug dealers who chase the rabbits for food, so you need a tactical stick (or cane ) when you go for a walk, these dogs are tough enough if you drive by them slow they bite (and make holes ) in your tires. I don't know if it would help against a black bear, I got them in the driveway some days, but way better than nothing. If you don't get an update this Spring, Bear 1, people 0. Everyone mentions the stinky oil in the tube, well they are right. No doubt about it. Anyway a gun cleaning kit makes it a snap to wipe that out KnifeCenter, thanks for the great service, people they are great to deal with. Have a good day God Bless

I'm 59. I use a cane for stability. This one's just the right hight for my 6'3" frame. It is a little heavier than I was used to but swings nicely and looks almost elligant in its simplicity of form. This is a long, full tang, heavy, razor sharp and useful accessory. Only problem was the cane tip which was of a hard rubber. It allowed the cane to slip on smooth surfaces. I purchased a package of two very good tips for under $2 at the local pharmacy. Product is as advertised and I couldn't be more pleased with it.

Now after purchasing this "Cane" I regret that I spent so much time getting my Concealed Carry License. With the handgun there are so many places where you can not go, but with this "thing" you are a free man again! People complain that the tip is not good. So what - buy yourself the one you like. There is no way Cold Steel can make a tip which will keep everybody happy. I got myself 1-1/4 inch cane tip (pretty big) and put it on the top of original tip without taking it off. Great, great "Cane" ! I am very pleased. And The KnifeCenter is the place to go !

I put a rubber cane tip on it for greater grip on smooth floors and I did a para-cord wrap around the handle. It helps when I'm walking my dog on rough, uneven terrain. It's rugged and swings naturally with my stride and it doesn't rattle!!!! It is a very sharp item and all that I expected. And it arrived a day early.

Cold Steel HD sword cane

I just received my CS HD sword cane, on time and undamaged. I will use this cane as my everyday cane. It is so inconspicuous that it draws no attention. It appears that the manufacturer has paid attention to the reviews suggesting improvement in certain areas. I found only one small issue with my cane. The tip is plastic or very hard rubber making it a bit slick on hard or wet surfaces. Otherwise the entire product is perfect. The sword cane came with a sharp blade. The "o" rings are true "o" rings. The shaft and "o" rings had been lubricated with machine oil. The sword came out of the tube with ease. Overall fit and finish is perfect. I can honestly give this sword cane 5 stars and would recommend this product to anyone. Don't waste your money on cheaper sword canes.

A nice implement that is a 100% functional walking stick. And it looks like an everyday, ordinary cane. But inside is a extremely lethal double edged sword. The can itself makes a pretty good club if needed. All Cold Steel products are excellent and not outrageously expensive. They are not cheap but a cheap knife is worthless. Don't waste your money on junk.

A great real cane!

Due to hip replacement surgeries, I need a real cane from time to time...and knowing that this one also has a surprise inside is a reassuring feeling! The quality and strength appears to be top notch. I have not used it on anything, but it is also quite sharp...so should I, it will make quick work of whatever that is. The only thing I would change might be a larger, more ergonomic handle.

Excellent Product!!!

Bought this after I fractured both my tibia and fibula requiring me to receve an 18 inch titanium rod inserted into my leg. Naturally I wanted something to help with my recovery and offer a sense of protection.This is a very dependable and sturdy orthopedic cane. When they say heavy duty, they are not kidding. Blade could have been a little sharper but I still have no doubt it could easily take care of business when you need it to. Looks just like a normal can you'd buy in a drug store, which is great as no one would ever suspect.

Good but needs tweaking

I purchased this cane just prior to knee surgery. Found it to be a bit too tall for me so I shortened the "tube" with a pipe cutter. Easy fix, just be careful not to cut it too short, the blade still has to fit in there. Wanted to change the ferrule as the one CS uses is not very grippy on smooth surfaces. No luck, it's a permanent fixture. Ended up ruffing up the bottom of the existing rubber foot for traction. The overall design is all personal protection vs medical device. I'm completey good with that.

Strong and dependable

Very nice! Had to make a few changes. The cane tip was to slippery. Replaced it with regular cane tip. Cut cane to a proper length for me. Shortened rubber tube that sword tip fits in and reglued it to the tip. I used a piece of construction paper fitted inside the cane to protect the edge of the blade. Debured the opening with a small knife to prevent damage to the orings on the handle. Lubed the orings with door ease. Polished the blade to a mirror finish with flitz metal polish. Resharpened the blade. Now I love it. Blade comes out much easier. I had been using a 12 oz cane, did not realize how much strength I had lost. The cold steel cane weighs 1 pound 12 oz. after the modifications. After using it for a month or so it feels much lighter to me now. I would recomend this to anyone who needs a cane that can be used in a life or death situation. It is a confidence builder after you have learned how to use a cane to defend yourself.

This cane is called heavy duty for a reason...it is! I read some reviews prior to purchase and most people said the same thing. I found the item to be very well made. It is sturdy and usable wether for walking or self defense. The sword is tightly secured in the shaft so no fear of it sliding out unintentionaly. If you give a slight turn as you draw the sword it comes out with no problem. The blade is sharp and ready for business. I wish there was more room at the base of the blade, near the handle, for a two handed grip. The handle could be a little more comfortable but its not too bad for walking. The only reason I did not give it a 5 rating is because it should have some kind of blade guide in the shaft to protect the blade when drawing it. If one is planning on using it for self defense, one should train with it. I believe the constant drawing of the sward during training is going to damage the blade.

Best stealth I've ever seen

First the reason for the 4rating...in my opinion the sword was dull, that's like buying a gun without rounds to go with it....nothing unethical about it but it would be nice to let the buyer know or offer to sharpen for extra charge....another great cold steel product!!! Otherwise researched it a lot before purchase...I remember seeing the guy with sunglasses in his garage giving a review on YouTube . He said that he always wanted one but never came across one that was more that a showpiece ...this is it. I read a lot of complaints on it, most B.S....like the smell...clean it if you want, but I'm sure that when I need to use it I won't be thinking about the smell or that it Dulls on the tube upon insertion ...if I need to pull it out I will dull it before it goes back in anyway. I bought 2 one as a gift and one for me 10 years from now when I can get away with using a cane. I only buy weapons that are real. This is fully functional sword and would no doubt do the job. You will need to cut it to the correct length if you plan to use it as a cane easy job. Probably illegal to Cary on the street but great if you want a stealth weapon to lean buy your door .

Super sharp! Heavy duty blade to be sure. This is just what I was looking for. Will put some foam down the shaft to keep the tip from ratteling, replace the rubber tip with one from the drug store, and get some replacement O rings for when they wear out. I have been wanting this for a while and I finally have it in my hands. Yes......it does stink when you pull it out. I can live with that. Thanks Cold Steel for making such a great product and thank you KnifeCenter.com for making it affordable!

have been using cane as a stabilizer , Bad knee after 3 surgeries still have to wear hinged knee brace , has good heft to it . good to know is blade inside just in case , only suggestion , possibly sometype of lock to keep blade in cane till needed , and maybe make handle more of a shepherds crooked shape . I did add an more flexible cane tip only a few dollars at local Rite Aid store.

Best Sword Cane for the price

I have owned, colleted and used antique and modern sword canes for over 25 years. This is by far the best cane for the money - and far better than many costing four times as much. Blade design, heft and balance are excellent and the edge is razor sharp out of the box. Unlike many sword canes, this one is discreet, showing no buttons or joins that could give it away as a weapon. Yes, a little plain and orthopaedic looking, but that is a positive. Only minor drawbacks are you need to care for the o-rings regularly with a little silicone and keep the carbon blade oiled. In all respects - value and funtions!!

Some thoughts about the Cold Steel Heavy Duty Sword Cane

I just purchased the Cold Steel "Heavy Duty Sword Cane," (the 100th sword, in my private collection) after watching multiple on-line demonstration videos, about it.. I held a degree of trepidation about buying this somewhat "stodgy-looking" sword cane, because I was (am) *so disappointed* with the quality of Cold Steel's "Aluminum Head Sword Cane"--which, sadly, turned out to be the 'crap,' that Lynn Thompson so fervently tells us in his sales video, that his sword canes, are *not* ( ... compared to his competitors' sword canes)... But, having an "instinct" about the Heavy Duty Sword Cane, I ordered one from the folks at The Knife Center... I have had it for about a week--and to my pleasant surprise, I am beginning to like it--appreciate it--more and more, as the days go by... Yes--as other people have stated, on-line--one of the O-rings, employed to suction-grip the hilt to the thick aluminum shaft, did break-up, with only a couple of hard tugs on the crooked-handle.. which I must caution, that after extensively handling all types of swords, over the past 40 years, the Heavy Duty Sword Cane was initially, the most *difficult* to extract from its "scabbard" (its aluminum shaft)... which in a dire, "threat-situation," can leave you, *dead*... Ironically, the partially disintegrated O-ring (half of it, remains within its deep, circular groove), has made it easier to extract the hilt from the shaft... I am also pleasantly surprised that the finish on this stealthier-looking sword cane ("stealthier"--because of the very fact that it *does* simply appear to be a piece of "medical equipment") , is much *better* than the vulnerable, and *easily* scratched or chipped fiberglass-composite shafts, and aluminum heads, of Cold Steel's "City Stick" and "Aluminum Head Sword Cane"... But, saving the best-for-last-- it is the 24 inch 1055 high carbon steel blade, that has garnered my *admiration*, for what I feel to be, one of the only, true, highly-functional sword cane blades on the world-market, today... This 3/4 inch-wide, stiff-but-resilient, partly double-edged and nicely-finished blade, is not just--as they used to say--a "pig-sticker"... not just a glorified bayonet: it's spear-shaped tip and sharp edges, *will* save your life, if the horrible need ever arises... It is very light, quick and maneuverable, featuring a fairly thick spine, that extends approximately two-thirds the length of the blade's topside, which then transitions into that double edged (eight inch) "coup-de-gras" blow for any opponent wishing you ill-will... What remains to be seen, for me, is just how well the various parts (including the thick, rubberized drag-collar) of the Cold Steel "Heavy Duty Sword Cane," holds-up with everyday use, over a period of time.... But for The Knife Center's price of $89.95--I would be hard-pressed, not to take this bargain-for-the-money, over almost any other sword cane on the international market--some which will literally cost you * ten times* the price, and will not protect you better... The questions to ask yourself, are: "What do I *want* from this product...? Do I simply want a reliable "third leg"...? a staunch medical aid ...? Or do I want a "tool," which will combine the best features of personal stability when walking, with the *most efficient* means of repelling a potential armed-attacker...? The choice is ours... As for me--if the Cold Steel Heavy Duty Sword Cane does indeed last well, and last long, I will be buying two more of them, as "back-ups".

Everything I expected

I received my cane this morning. As expected, within minutes, the O-rings broke. I took the advice of other reviewers and put Gorilla Tape on instead. [I split the tape and wrapped it in three places, doubling the wrap as I did] It works great now. You can hear a suction "pop" as it is pulled out with only minimal effort and it does not rattle at all. I also cut an inch off the bottom with pipe cutters and replaced the plastic end with a rubber one. I do actually need a cane to walk after hip surgery that didn't go as planned and this one is very usable and doesn't look like anything special to advertise what it really is. The reviews were extremely helpful in knowing what to expect. This was my first order from knifecenter but I will definitely be shopping there again in the future.

Have to give only 4 stars

We purchased this cane for actual use as a walking aide, and we love the self-protection aspect. The cane is very well made, and the sword is the real deal. We are going to take lessons from a self-defense instructor on how to use this for protection in a safe manner. But, I had to give it only four stars because after deploying the sword for the very first time, an o-ring broke in half. Then, another one broke the next time we pulled the sword from the "baton" scabbard. When we contacted Knife Center about this, they told us we had to contact Cold Steel. Where's the customer service. Yes, it is a simple thing, but having had my own retail business, I would have called Cold Steel for my customer. Just saying...in my not-so-humble opinion, the sword was in Knife Center's inventory for a long time, and the o-rings dried up and became brittle.

Discreet Protection

The main thing that prevented me from buying sword canes in the past is that they all had some kind of visible button or lever to press to unsheath the sword. This one has no button and no rattle.. nothing to lead anyone to believe this is nothing more than a piece of medical equipment to help disabled people walk. This discretion is key and masterfully done with double O ring suction lock. Items like this are expected to be less than razor sharp so I dont consider that a con... just a realistic expectation. This one is quite dull but I know how to sharpen a blade.

Came today and very pleased

Right off, I was well pleased with the feel and looks, the size perfect. I use a cane every day when out and about due to leg joint and back problems. I 300 pounds and the cane appears sturdy enough to support my weight. Likely I’ll buy a larger rubber tip to go over the one it came with as I can tell right off the hard tip will never hold up to daily use. The blade is obviously well made but mine was not razor sharp by any means. Paper cutting test the blade cut was not smooth. I would have preferred the blade sharpened more and longer, at least sharpened a good foot (12 inches) would have been better in my opinion. Like it is it’s more of a stabbing or jabbing blade. For the money paid it really leaves no room for argument. I would have given it a 5 had the blade been as sharp as advertised. It the condition the blade received I doubt it would cut bamboo much less a pineapple. It could be sharpened with some work. I doubt if I’ll pull it from the sheath that often in jest or play as pulling it could wear its holding ability over time and reading the reviews makes me think the o rings could snap. Overall, I’d buy again with hopes of getting one that is actually razor sharpened. Packing was good with quick delivery.

it got 4 out of five cause the bottom tip of the caine (part that touches the ground) is plastic and not rubber, also that is not in the product description, the product is great, only way to make it perfect is if the bottom part was rubber like normal caines, FYI this caine sword is useable as a caine unlike may other cheaper nock-off's

The part that hold the sword is good for walking only unfortunately I had a self-defense situation to arise I didn't want to use the sword so I tried the cane well after 2 hard sold hits upside the head it stopped him but now I have no way to carry my sword make the handle none slip and the cane stronger thicker and harder the sword is perfect it can cut someone head off or limb with one swing blade gets 10 stars sheath gets 2 its not for self defense

Wasn't sure exactly what to expect after reading some of the reviews, but I'm very satisfied. Very sturdy, very orthopedic looking. Just what I wanted. No odd looks from the general public. The blade came pretty sharp, but does bump the inside of the tube when drawing or re-inserting the blade. I used the shower rod cover trick mentioned previously and make sure to insert so only the back edge touches the inside before it reaches the liner. The inside of my tube was smooth, so I don't anticipate excessive wear on the o-rings. Put a little silicone grease on the o-rings to insure less abrasion. Showing no signs of wear and still holds tight. Can't shake the blade/handle out, upside down. A slight twist drawing and re-inserting makes for a smooth action. Whatever the material they put in the bottom of the tube as a blade protector has a very harsh solvent odor. I drilled a small hole in the cane tip to help accelerate the out gassing of the solvent. The pins holding the blade to the handle look sort of small, but I guess the fact that there are three of them should make it secure. Time will tell. Not a classy looking piece, but flies under the radar by looking orthopedic.

Nice cane

Got the cane as a gift. Pretty neat in general. I really like it, because once I pull the sword out I could use it as a bat and a sword... The only reason I give it 4 star is because it is so hard to pull out. The manufacturer needs to make some improvement on the part which connects the blade and the handle. It took me several minutes to pull the sword out for the first time.

I am able to use this cane for walking in the woods and walking at night for self protection. You never know when you may need it. If it had a twist lock or a button release it would be that much better. Although it is a bit long by about 3 inches but other than that it is a great value.

Hello i had my heavy duty sword cane for about a month now, i bought it here at knife center because there price and quality items. Im happy and dissapointed in this item. For the price and quality of the blade they could add some more to this cane. I have a disease in my spine and needed a cane and sword canes here are legal to carry thats why i orderd one. Some things i did to it was. A shower curtain rod inside the shaft. Took a razor blade and a screw driver to pop the rubber tip off. Added a much better one with alittle gorrila glue to stay place. Ive also added 100ft of paracord on the shaft in a samuria weave. And a strap for my hand. I have 100usd in the sword and another 100usd in mods and oil and o ring lube. The blade is amazing. It is sharp. It might be more effective stabbing than slashing aswell. Im 350lbs and put my weight into the cane and i have no problems with the cane itself. My disease in my spine makes it very painful to try and loose weight and im in and out of the hospital but i ike this item when im out. And the paracord is reflective black so at night people can see me ect.

A little attention to quality wouldn't hurt

The case isn't lined with anything which allows the blade to contact the metal case with a tinkling sound when walking, so if you want to actually use the cane as a cane be aware of this, the upper inside of the case has a ragged over-spray of the exterior coating material and will probably lead to premature failure of the rubber retaining o-rings, easily replaced, other than that, a solid piece of personal protection gear and a functional walking stick albeit a bit heavy, but you knew that.

Oh no! Bad o-rings! Otherwise, now that's a sword!

I needed a cane after 3 mini-strokes. Of course thought of Cold Steel first. This cane/weapon is solidly built and the blade is high quality, razor sharp, sturdy and balances well with the handle. It is a serious weapon and can add much more reach than even the largest folder. Only negative is the o-rings that hold the sword in place. They split and fell of with first pull. Asked seller and cold steel for replacements. I am getting along just fine with rubber bands. Take a punch and make a few very small indentations at top and sword fits perfect. Put tape over strike area to avoid marring the finish. Would have like to have seen better retention system. The heavy duty cane is just that and is well worth every penny. The cane itself is sturdy aircraft aluminum and just the right thickness. Adjustment was a snap. I used a screw driver to gently pry off rubber foot. Then placed cane in a vice with a gun barrel insert. You can use two pieces of wood with small "v" notch also. About twenty passes with a hack-saw and it is ready for your height or taste. You will need to re-glue the plastic insert in place. I shopped many sites for a sword cane. Nothing came even remotely close to this fine cane in this price range. I am ordering another just because. Would get six stars if not for the o-rings. Great Job again Cold Steel!

Better than expected

I purchased this cane because of my experience with the Cold Steel pistol grip sword cane as well as dozens of other CS products I own. My main reason was because I wanted a blade that would work well for a slashing attack as well as thrusting. I have not been disappointed! The blade is typical CS quality & very strong. Used properly, this thing will definitely do the job & it looks like any other medical support. With no release button to give away it's little secret you retain the element of surprise, a big plus to me. I only had two minor issues with this piece. 1. One of the o-rings used to keep the blade in place tore the second time I used it. This was easy to fix with common o-rings found at any hardware store, I got mine at Lowe's. 2. There was some issue with the blade rattling inside the shaft if it was bumped or the tip hit the ground at an angle. This was easy enough to solve as well by inserting a piece of sponge rubber into the bottom of the shaft. The piece is now perfect & I love it! I would highly recommend this item to anyone looking for orthopedic support as well as defensive capabilities. My only recommendation is this, learn how to use it! A sword is not a point & click weapon like a firearm & it is only as good as the person wielding it! If you are looking for this type of defense tool but don't want to invest high dollars like you would with a Berger, take a serious look at this offering.

This is a great cane for the price. It needed some attention. The o-rings came broken. I replaced with heavy duty rubber bands. Works great. The tip is plastic and worthless. I upgraded to large rubber foot. The cane was easy to custom fit. I easily trimmed three inches off. There is a round plastic insert in the bottom. I cut off three inches and replaced with electrical tape around it to hold in place. I plan to have lead added to bottom, as much as it will take. I drilled out the small hole in handle and added lanyard made of parachute chord. The blade is what you would expect from Cold Steel, robust and razor sharp. This cane means business and will be one heck of a surprise when the cretins challenge! Cold Steel needs to up the ante and tweak this cane to make it perfect. Shaft is made of what appears to be aircraft aluminum. It seems just the right thickness to make the shaft stout. I would like to see more cane options from Cold Steel. This cane is definitely heavy duty. "Cogito, ergo armatum sum!"

The "smell" from hell

I purchased the cane as an Orthopedic transition from weeks of crutch use (that was not only painful but would knit your armpit hair into braids that rival the Swiss miss hot chocolate chick). As a cane it serves its role (turns you from a bipod into a tripod) . The materials used in (as well as the construction of) the blade are purposeful to its intended use. Grinds are symmetrical (but wavy). Sharpness is esoterica and individual to each purchaser, mine was not shaving sharp. The design as previously reported (hither and yon) has area’s in need of tweaking. The often touted shower curtain rod cover as a sheath liner/condom was installed to fix the telltale blade/sheath “tink” when my cane tip hit any hard flooring surface off angle. On my iteration, the modification did little, to nothing to muffle the blade tip bounce. The insertion of the shower curtain rod cover as a sheath liner does have merit, if only to protect the supplied edge from contacting the inside of the aluminum cane/sheath body. The oxidized surface of aluminum sheath can be hard on the sharpened edges when you un-sheath and re-sheath the blade. My fix for blade interface comes with an unintended consequence. It helps to eradicate the legendary “Funk” that from emanates from the sheath at every blade pull. A stink that makes a burning car tire extinguished in a septic tank smell like a breath of fresh air. The process begins with removing the cane tip. The recommended method of working it off with your fingers/thumbs was a fail. A douche of boiling water poured into the aluminum cane body and a soak in a coffee can half full of boiling water for 10 minutes loosened the tip enough to be forced off with an oak dowel slid inside the cane body. The manufacturer glued a poorly designed standoff inside the cane body in an attempt to capture and quiet the sword tip and that structure needs to be removed. My hack/fix is simple. I cut the locking end from 12 inch nylon cable ties. You will need around 50 or so (depending on the particular thickness of the cable tie purchased). The cut ends are bundled together and tied with a constrictor knot using bow serving thread. The assembly looks like the bristles on a shaving brush. The shower curtain cover mod is trimmed to length and inserted into the cane body. The cable tie mod/assembly (bristles first end) is inserted 1 inch past the bottom of the cane. The empty space was filled with hot glue. When the blade is inserted the blade tip is held away from contacting the wall of the cane body by the long bristles (if you will) of the cable tie assembly. A small twist after insertion of the sword will help also support and isolate the sword tip. A chamfer is needed at the inside edge of the sheath opening to help with wear your O-rings. I cut mine with valve grinding compound applied to the peen end of an appropriately sized ball peen hammer. The cane shaft was twisted on the peen end (upside down to mitigate the entry of crap to the cane body) until the wall thickness was reduced by 3/4. The chamfer allows a gentler transition for the O-rings. When the sword is unsheathed. The aluminum cane body can be used as non-lethal thin walled truncheon/escrima stick (bad idea). If the chamfered sheath is held at the cane tip end and soft tissue anatomy is targeted. If you thrust the cane body with the force of a punch. The chamfered end has a cookie cutter quality and potentially could extract a 1 inch skin divot with every contact. My mod to address the slick round sword pommel is to apply shrink on tubing that is used for grips on salt water fishing rods. One last tip, lubricate your O-rings with Renaissance wax and leave as applied (do not wipe off).

Could be better

I really had high expectations when I ordered this sword cane. I was looking for 'an ace in the hole' weapon which would be strong enough for daily use as a cane, look 'orthopedic' and yet provide a rapidly deployable rapier with slashing capability. At first glance, I thought I had hit the jackpot. The weight of the unit isn't prohibitive, the looks are orthopedic, and the blade is quickly retrievable. The problems are in the details. The aluminum shaft is excelent as a 2d weapon but; the sword rattles in the shaft. Cold steel had a piece of light plastic tube inserted and glued to the plastic cane tip (I think they used bear-barf for glue-it STINKS) but it didn't surround the blade. I tried to replace the light plastic tube with pvc pipe but couldn't find the right inside diameter to protect the blade and still fit into the shaft snuggly. The closest I could find fit the shaft but wedged the blade if you dropped the unit. I finally reinstalled the plastic tube and held it in place with a heavy piece of foam. I threw the hard plastic cane tip away and replaced that with a standard large cane tip. There is a real balancing act that must be done to get the ratteling stoped without wedgeing the blade. The plastic tube and the pvc both will come right out wedged to the blade when the blade is drawn, IF you do not have them spaced right around the sword tip. And, the rattling inside the shaft takes the edge off the blade. I think cold steel could line the shaft with something that would not rattle nor dull the blade. I'm thinking either leather or ???? Still, all in all, the unit is well worth the price, just be prepared th mess with it awhile until you get it right.

Way more sword a lot less cane

I was looking for a daily self defense item, it's quite heavy which I don't mind terribly but the "cane" portion is really just a thin walled steel tube. No style or craftsmanship really, the handle is also very bulky. The blade is definitely the best part about the item strong and balanced. But overall I'm kind of disappointed in the bulky nature of the whole thing.

Rock solid, real sword,. good fit and finish. I just had a total hip replacement and was looking for a cane.It looks like any other orthopedic cane plus the advantage of having some personal protection.Overall weight is a little heavier than a ortho cane. If they could make the tubing lighter that would be better.

Finally arrived...

Blade seems nice and sharp, but it seems to get hung up easily drawing and re-inserting into the shaft. The Two o-rings on the handle which assist in keeping the sword seated in the cane got torn up on the 2nd or 3rd pull (which has been reported in other reviews so I expected that.) What I didn't expect was the sword to get stuck part way inserted into the shaft. Re-inserting the blade into the shaft was very difficult and perhaps I leaned on it a bit too hard which has now jammed the hilt into the cane shaft and I cannot remove it. It also seems that there are grooves inside the cane which are carving into the hilt leaving fine scratches that will only get worse as it's used.

From A Long Time Cane User

I have a degenerative disease that's slowly taking away my balance and ability to walk, so I've been relying on a cane for a minimum of a decade, and slowly transitioning to a walker and a wheelchair. Still, I keep a cane with me so I can get up in tight places and maneuver around, like in corner seatings in restaurants. Over time, I've managed to collect 40+ canes, and this is my 4th sword cane. My review here is less about the sword than about some of the comments about the grip and the "stealth," and it's use as an actual cane. The grip is pretty horrible. There's two primary cane grips: a t-grip and a crook grip. A t-grip is preferred by most people who need a cane for ortho purposes. This is very close to a t-grip, but a little short. A normal t-grip extents in front of the cane slightly to alleviate the stress on the hand from extended use, especially in long-term standing. Also the back of the grip is usually a little longer. So in terms of "stealth," the cane already looks much different than a normal cane, and is a little more painful to use over an extended amount of time. There is a mod for this, and a way to hide it, once I get to the slipperiness of the handle. The grip is nice and fat at both ends, and you can make two round "extensions" out of simple spools carved to shape, and attached to both ends of the cane. Obviously this is going to stick out like a sore thumb, and mostly it's just a cosmetic effect. It will never be as strong as long as it's not part of the integral design. You can skip doing this. I did. But that brings us back to the "plastic" handle. Maybe you don't live in a wet climate, where it doesn't snow, and you don't have to use gloves. I hate your guts. Slippery, wet canes just slide out of my vinyl gloves. So I took Plasti Dip and dabbed it on thick onto the grip with those foam brushes. Dabbed it, not painted it. This gave the handle a textured, aggressive grip, and can cover up the cosmetic "extensions" to both ends seamlessly. It also really makes the grip comfortable, and looks more like a custom orthopedic design. Of course, the "slippery when wet" thing means I have to figure out a way to make the tube part discretely "grippy" enough to pull without looking weirdly out of place, unlike the grip. Making the cane tube look as plain as possible works against the idea of "stealth," oddly enough. If you look at most canes, you'll see that most of them have a faux gold or silver connection between the top of the tube and the bottom of the grip. You can mimic this with carefully cut to size layers of silver foil tape, or if you have a rotary cutter, a rounded plumbing joint. I actually just cannibalized one of my other sword canes. Finally, the tip. Yes, the tip is awful. This was designed as a sword cane, not an ortho device. Cut the cane to size and find an appropriate tip. A crutch tip fits better than the standard cane tip, but I really recommend the Thomas Fetterman Crutch Tips. For the guy that wanted to add lead to the tip, well, that's extreme, but these tips are heavier than normal tips, but they're unbeatable for slippery surfaces, and, well, you just have to see them at http://www.fetterman-crutches.com/tips/cane/. Remember, if you cut the cane to size (which I recommend), and use a cheap replacement tip, stick a washer the width of the cane tube into the tip so it doesn't eventually push through the tip as the tip wears down with use. Great sword cane, okay ortho cane, but a lot of mods to get it there, and still look normal as well. Obviously made by sword cane makers who don't use canes.

Tip replacement is the only weakness

Based on many online reviews, along with years of personal Cane use experience, I feel that this is a fine cane. However, I’m not certain why many, many online reviews portray tip replacement as a simple, straightforward procedure. It is anything but that. First of all, the tip is GLUED in place. Removing it is EXTREMELY difficult. I was able to remove it with great difficulty and a pair of channel locks after holding the tip under scalding water. I needed to adjust the lengths of my cane. When I finally managed to pry off the tip, I found the shaft to be packed full of material with a tiny tube coming out of the middle, likely to help dissipate moisture. This will absolutely, positively not come out. I finally, out of frustration unnecessarily caused by Cold Steel, took my saw and cut through the shaft where I needed to. There is no difference in the performance, draw or carry after cutting 3/4” from the tip. BE ADVISED, this cane is extremely difficult to replace tips and/or size. That is the only reason for the 3 star rating. If sizing and tip replacement were easier, this cane would be a solid 5. It is however an excellent setup for the price!

I like this sword, decent scabbard, solid built, nice blade shape. My sword delivered with a blade that won’t cut butter, literally, very disappointment. I watched several YouTube videos on fit, finish, and quality before purchasing and all stated razor sharp out the box, NOT MINE! Piercing Is great and that it. I will have to spend hours putting an edge on this sword. Ask KC to check The blade sharpness if considering a purchase If the blade was reasonably sharp, the overall rating would have been 4.5, a Rating of 3 is being generous

Fix the problem

As many others have correctly reviewed the "O" or "D" rings are of extremely poor quality. They broke the first time I drew the sword. Left unchecked the sword will rattle and easily falls out of the cane body. The easiest repair is indeed wrapping with tape to make a snug fit. Otherwise it works well and is useful as a cane. Its difficult to understand why CS does not address this despite the multiple reviews stating the issue. I will not buy another nor recommend to others and would not buy another. It also raises questions about the quality of other CS products.

Got my "cane" today. I was underwhelmed. The O rings fell apart right out of the box. The "Gorilla" tape fix works ok. The grip will take getting used to. I am used to fine quality from Cold Steel. This product is not up to par with other offerings. A little quality control would help.

house defense - extreme intimidation once drawn because the 1 time. I have popped it out they ran, this sword cane is one size fits all. The 0 rings suck as far as a vacuum lock so as a mod I cut the steel pipe to my size. then replaced the rubber cap with a another cap. and a wide rubber band I replaced the o rings with 6 pieces of grip tape. each 3 inches long in this way you have an extremely good tactile grip. the grip tape also takes up all the space of the o rings. so the blade dose not clunk about.

VERY POOR DESIGN

I've only have my sword cane for about two hours and when I twisted my torso to stretch my lower back the blade came flying out of the sheath and almost killed my cat. If you trip or fall the handle could easily snag onto something and the blade is gonna slide out and kill you. Someone needs to add a locking mechanism into the handle to stop it from sliding so easily. Not to mention that the handle is made out of plastic and will probably break off in your hand. It's only a matter of time before you hurt yourself with it.

Not a great fillet knife...

I originally bought this to function as a giant fillet knife for large saltwater trophy fish, with the added bonus that the sheath would be sanitary and disguise it so kids wouldn’t mess with it on the boat... but beyond the edge not getting sharp enough to process fish, the blade rusted while dry docked on a boat! The o-rings are not sufficient to keep out marine environment, beware!

I bought one a couple years ago. That O ring that holds the sword is a real problem. So stiff you can hardly pull the sword out. Also easy to break the o ring. & is a very poor design. The balance of the sword, when held by the handle is also very bad.
