Pros: Head Material
Cons: Balance, Construction, Handle Material
If it ain’t broke….
I’ve been a loyal Cold Steel customer for over twenty years, but this axe was an unexpected disappointment. My grandfather had an old Hudson axe long ago and I remember how solid and tough it was. Naturally, when my favorite knife brand came out with one I bought it. WTF?!? The clamped head is too light to handle any heavy chopping and it wore loose after only ten minutes of work. Eventually, I had to remove, adjust, and tighten the head back on. Unfortunately, it still didn’t stay put and the handle cracked. The good news is I found another brand that made a stronger, more traditional Hudson Bay axe for almost the same price. Cold Steel made a mistake trying to “modernize” a proven classic and I’ll be more careful when buying from them in the future.
