Great hawk

Great weight and feel. I love the long handle, it lets you get a lot of leverage and creates a powerful swing. The edge has great retention and will stay sharp for a long time. I've done a lot of work with this hawk, chopping firewood and splitting kindling, and it's pretty tough. As and added bonus it throws great too.

I had doubts but NOT anymore.

I bought one a year ago & never used it. I recently put a convex mirror edge on it. Took it out & chopped a 4"x4" hole through a half of a log, 8" thick. Had to go from both sides to get through. When i was done, it would still shave paper. There were NO nicks in the blade. Wood was super hard B-walnut. I am impressed. This would also be a absolutely devastating weapon. I like that you can choose the control & impact force just by changing your hand position on the handle. GREAT VALUE. I did have to use my Dremel tool to make the head fit the handle properly, Mine was a little crooked.

Cold Steel 90TH Trail Hawk Drop Forged Tomahawk 22" Overall

Great little tomahawk for camping. flat head hammer on one side and a shape blade for cutting on the other. I wanted a multipurpose tool to everything to setup camp and in a pinch self protection. Shipping was fast and arrived intact. I liked everything except for the white hickory handle. I just disassembled and painted it black. Looks great now.

Awesome Tool

I spend a serious amount of time in the woods hunting. I carry this Tomahawk with me at all times. It easily slides in your belt in the small of your back for carry. It is the best tool I have found for clearing limbs, brush, and overhangs when setting stands and clearing shooting lanes. The tomahawk works better than ANY machete, saw or limb cutter that I have used in the past. Not to mention it's all those tools and more in a single, easily carried tool. Another plus is that it is a blast to throw when I'm not in the stand. You won't regret having it with you.

This smaller tomahawk is well made and well worth every cent. Refinshed the handle for personal prefence, just love a darker stained look on wood. My younger son really like this tomahawk as well, he can throw at wood targets quite easy. This is a must have for hiking or just exploring through the woods. Highly recommended !

Excellent Tool for almost any occassion

I use this as both an everyday tool and my 3-4 day weekend excursions into the mountains. I also throw it for fun when I'm bored working out in the yard. I've had my Trail Hawk now since around 2009 and I haven't managed to break it yet. It also says incredibly sharp for what I put it through. I've only had to sharpen it i think maybe 3 times in the entire 2 years I've had it and I use it probably 3-4 times per week. And yes, I do use the hammer head side as a general HAMMER. I'm not one of those nuts that buys a tool and sits it on the shelf. I USE it regularly. I was skeptical at first, after reading other reviews thinking "how can something this cheap be that good"...I was sold on day one and still am. My one and only trail hawk is still going strong.

Have used this camping as well as carving wood, like a chisel with a baton. It's a good axe, chisel, hammer and it's a nice light weight. If you want it to look really good you'll have to spend a bit of time on it but they're great for customizing!

great hawk.. better steel than the 420J, I think. figured out one thing! that little set screw? 3 mm hex head! but don't worry about that little wobble. the screw is fully torqued. Hickory is enormously tough. It's used to make baseball bats.

Excellent little hawk for hunting companion.

I mainly use my Trail Hawk while deer hunting. It comes in very useful for trimming small limbs for my climber tree stand. The weight is perfect, in that you don't get tired carrying it in and out of the woods over long distances. I took my Trail Hawk and modified it a bit. I removed the paint from the head and sanded to a fine finish, added a few file markings, and put gun bluing on the head and tung oil. Next, I sanded the handle and gave it a little darker stain finish with a few scorch marks added to the hickory handle. All finished off with a rustic hand sewn leather sheath. The modification gave it a really nice old-time look. I wouldn't want to go into the hunting woods without my Cold Steel Trail Hawk.

Excellent weapon/tool

This particular tomahawk is first a weapon and secondly a tool. As a martial art weapon I use it as follows:1)alone; 2)with knife; 3)with sabre. As a tool is very handy in field use both as an light axe and as a hammer. Its light weight makes it an agile weapon with easy recovery (especially compared with its brother tomahawks).Due to its small head you need good eye hand coordination in order not to miss your mark, either as a weapon or as a tool. Also although its weight is enough to impart serious damage in a fight is somewhat lacking when used as an axe, yet it still manages to get the job done, it just takes a little more effort.

Used it with several other makes and models of Hawks at at a Tomahawk throwing event ant the boy scout Centennial event. Got a lot of "Sticks" with this model into pine wood. Handle did not break. Most boys kept this unit pretty square with the target. Bottom line, boys had fun with it.

Awesome trail hawk

I got this trail hawk mailed to me in Hawaii and it came right on time, so thanks knife center you are awesome! I plan to order again. The edge of my hawk not the sharpest but I thought it was sharper than I expected after looking at other reviews. I will be using it mainly for camping and hiking and ultimately will be in my survival kit. You are going to have to make some changes like sanding the handle, the set screw got thrown out because it's useless, and putting a better edge on the blade. A lot of people customize their hawks like taking the paint off and applying a bluing finish after sanding. I have customized mine where I have sanded the top of the handle to the contour of the hawk sitting sideways and I can use it like an ads tool if I need to. There so much things you can do to customize your trail hawk. I'm going to be doing a lot if cutting so I made mine look good but it's not pretty to where I'll be worried about the cosmetics. All in all it's a great tool, I'm happy with mine and I'm sure you will love yours too. Aloha!

Unexpected favorite

I ordered this along with what I thought was going to be my favorite. Most things in life are not what you think . This hawk is a super sleeper, it wakes up when it finds its way to your hand. The weight of it seems perfect and it sharpens up very nicely. This is my favorite production hawk out of the eight I own. I say I like them all but when I think of it I really only pick up a couple of them. Anyway, the trail hawk is the best one in hand, even if it doesn't seem like it's gonna be

Replaced my SOG with this

I bought one of these about 7 years ago, right after they came out. I used it as a tool and daily thrower for the better part of 5 years, right up until I deployed the last time. I bought a SOG thinking it would be better as a part of my combat kit and truthfully as a plain weapon it probably was. However and this is a big however, the handle broke while I was in Afghanistan while I was using it as a breach tool. Fortunately, I'd thrown my trail hawk in my box as a play thing for back on the FOB. A little work by “Haji the holster maker” and the trail hawk became part of my combat kit. Handle never broke but windows crashed in, door locks, pad locks and hasps gave way, crates were opened, doors were hacked open and the little trail hawk is none the worse for the wear (not much paint left on it though). Never had the call to fight with it, an M-4 and an M-9 do that all too well but my trail hawk is now part of my kit. If the handle were to break, I could cut and shape a new one using just the head - try that with one of the plastic handled jobs (heck, try getting SOG to send you just a replacement handle…) I've ordered a spike hawk to test - if the spike holds up for prying, I may retire my trail hawk but it'll still be in my deployment box just in case. You won't go wrong with this hawk if you are looking for a real world tool.

Great Thrwoer - Handy Tool

Throws like a champ! I have several hawks, carry a SOG Fusion as part of my combat kit but keep this one around for throwing. Light, cheap, easy to throw. Handles are readily available for the inevitable splits when you throw for cold drinks. Constant companion when hunting and camping, drives nails and tent pegs easily. Made a simple sheath for it - very handy.

good little Tomahawk

I am not familiar with tomahawks and was surprised by how light this thing is. That being said it does what it says and is balanced and lightweight if I choose to carry it. Not pretty and rather rudimentary but it is a tool not a fashion piece. I just wish it came with a belt holster of some type, though that does not seem available even on the cold steel web site. Will keep searching for one. All in all a fun tool for a great price.

Nice hawk!! One unsettling thing...the head is "secured" by a shallow set screw that allows the head to wobble. Replacing it with a more substantial fastener brought the Trail Hawk up par. Good balance for chopping, light enough to carry on or in a pack.

Great hawk for camping.

I use the Trailhawk for car camping. It's been great for anything from driving tent stakes to processing firewood. The only thing I've found negative about it is the edge, but that's with any hatchet or axe you buy. Just takes a little TLC with a file and you're ready. Buy it, you won't regret it.

Head to handle fit is sub par, fixed with a file in a few minutes. Also flame tempered handle. Handle material is hit or miss. This one came with a nice straight grain handle. Handle seemed long for the size of head, trimmed it down to size. Great hunting utility hawk.

solid tool

As others have mentioned, the fixation screw leaves the head slightly wobbly, but that's easily fixed by replacing the screw. The edge is a bit dull, but easily sharpened. The hammer surface is small, but functional. The wood handle is solid, but a little slick - fine sandpaper fixes that. A good tool for yardwork or camping, but also has a nice balance and weight for martial arts.

A Great Product With A Little Effort

Cold Steel's Trail Hawk is a great all around tool. I've recently used it to debark several logs for a rail split grape arbor, as a hammer for garden stakes, and a practice thrower. It does all of these well, and is extraordinarily light for such a versatile tool. That said, this is a mass produced product, and does need some work out of the box to reach it's potential. I sharpened mine, de-burred the head, removed the set screw, and sanded the handle down for a better friction fit to the head. Took about 1/2 hr, so no big deal really. I'd say a great product overall, and a real bargain for $22.

Great tool at a great price but it needs finishing work before you use it. Before you do anything remove the setscrew on the side of the head and throw it away. Sand the haft and fit the head to it properly. Great hawk and great choice of steel. Dump the setscrew and fit the head properly. This is a heavy hawk so it's best left at camp or in the car. I'm planning on buying a pipe hawk next.

The edge needed touched up some before it was really sharp, and the handle needed a little shaping to fit the head properly. The handle was too slick at first, but a little work fixed this issue. I didn't like the set screw in the head, but it is easily removed if you don't want it. I wanted to be able to put it in a pack and being able to remove the handle is really nice for this. The lighter weight was nice for this too. Good quality product.

Good cheap project

I plan to modify the head a haft and give it to my brother for Christmas. It's cheap, so it's good for experimenting. What have I got to lose? It's very rough around the edges. The edge is not symmetrical. The haft is marred by the head. Cleaning it up is part of my planned mods. There are several web sites with ideas for modifying the Trail Hawk (e.g. Cold Steel, Stormdrane). It's a fun project.

A working tomahawk

This is becoming my track hawk for brush clearing and everyday work. I got it for both the blade and the hammer head. Early testing is favorable for both. Please note that I do not throw, so this review will not help you there. I like hawks over hatchets as I find the weight distribution more comfortable (I should note that I blacksmith, so forward heavy is familiar). The way this blade swings is nice without feeling to heavy for longer work. The hammer head seems to be pretty tough and should hold up long term. I cannot yet speak on how well it will hold its edge. Being a classic hawk handle, the hand immediately points in the correct fashion, which I liked. The handle is a little splintered in one spot, but doesn't appear weakened. I also plan to tool-dip the handle so that it doesn't slide in my grip (as it isn't going to be thrown). The blade was not sharp at all when received.

Trail Hawk

Got the product in good time. The trail hawk came sharp. Good construction, light weight, yet chops as well as my other hatchets. It will be fun to play around with. I had to take off the head and sand down the handle. My first use resulted in several splinters. After several sanding and some Watco oil the grain has settled down.

Trail Hawk improvements

I found these instructions on google and I do not know the author. But after following these instructions, I can say that this guy is brilliant. Everything worked as he explained. I had a great time with this weekend project and I love my Trail Hawk. And of course Knifecenter's service and shipping were great as always. See instructions below: "While the Cold Steel Trail Hawk is serviceable it won't be winning any awards for fit and finish. The very fact the head is held by a set screw defies the point of a tomahawk. The Trail hawks head fitted poorly and wobbled horribly. Step 1: Removal of the set screw and head shows the eye of the head has never been finished. The rough edges of the eye caused serious handle deformity when they were seated at the factory. Step 2: Soaking the head in stripping compound allows removal of generic black paint. Casting finish is rough under the paint. However, clear lines are visible from heat treating. It appears the heat treating is up to the first third of the blade and a majority of the hammer pole. Step 3: Debur and bevel the eye of the head to remove sharp edges. Work can be done on the cheap with files and sandpaper, but a dremel type rotary tool makes it a 10 minute project! Step 4: Strip the finish from the handle and smooth the upper portion to remove the lines put in by the unfinished head of the hawk. Test fit and mark and remove excess handle material where the head seats until you have a good fit. Smooth the entire handle to 320 grit and refinish with a good stain and poly. Handle looks 100% better and is good to go. Step 5: Finish the head as desired. Some simple options are a patina with vinegar or mustard, cold bluing, or sanding/polishing. If you plan on leaving bare metal you will want to oil your hawk to prevent rust. There are lots of other finishing options that will allow you to make the Trail Hawk your own. Google is your friend here. Step 6: Final assembly. Place the head in the oven @ 200F and the handle in the freezer. Once the head is too hot to touch, place it on the handle and seat it by giving the top of the handle a sharp rap onto an unforgiving surface. If steps 3 & 4 were done correctly there should be 0 play in the tomahawk at this point. You may now happily throw the set screw in the garbage, or place it in a bin in the garage. Step 7: Sharpening. Sharpen your hawk with your favorite method until it reaches a point you are happy. Shaving sharp isn't required for hawks." Cheers!

I ordered this Hawk, for general hunting , and camping use. It is an amazing tomahawk! I found it to have too long of a handle for my liking, so I cut about 3" off the handle, and now it fits my needs perfectly. It splits small wood, chops moderately well, and the hammer end is just right for pounding stakes into the ground, or nails. I like it so well, I will be ordering another, as a gift. The only thing I might change, would be the cutting edge....I'd make it 3 1/2", then it would be "perfect"!

I've used these for years and years and currently have three. The weight and feel are great. The hammer is great. But in the end, the edge at 2 1/4" is just to short to be a go to survival or even camp tool as a chopper. The best use I've found is as a complement to a Cold Steel Shovel. The small edge is good for chopping though tough rooty earth. Since the head can be removed from the shaft, it packs up nice and the extra weight is negligible. I guess the next best use (in my mind) would be for throwing or as a hammer.

Good Hawk

Like most axes this will need sharpening right out of the box. This is a versatile tool for camping and backpacking. The hammer poll works well, and if you remove the pointless screw the head can be removed from the handle for easier transport and a bunch of other uses. It is usable as is, but with some mods it goes from good to great. I am very happy with my purchase.

Love it!!

I really like this little axe. I was looking for a modern version of the old bag axe carried by wilderness travelers from the frontier days. This handy tool fits the bill as a lightweight camper. The blade is just big enough to do some serious chopping. The hammer pole on the back is super handy for shelter stakes and the like. My only problems were the handle and the fit. The hickory handle is nice, but comes with a slick varnish. I fixed it by sanding off the varnish and hand rubbing three coats of tung oil on. The head was seated on the handle alittle cocked but it does not effect the function at all. The axe is so light and quick it's like an extension of my hand. Overall I would recommend this one over the other Coldsteel hawks without the pole, and the price beats custom handmades of similar design.

Very good camp hawk

I purchased this hawk to use kayak camping. It is a little light to cut large logs etc, however it will shear through vines, smaller branches etc. It packs very nice and is very handy. The longer handle makes it balance very nice. I would recomend this hawk to anyone who wants a light hawk to keep around the camp, when you are backpackings or kayaking camping. The reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is because it is made in Tawian, but is labled as American Tomahawk Company.

Cold Steel 90TH Trail Hawk Drop Forged Tomahawk 22"

Received package a feww days ago along with paracords and some knives. As with many reviewers I decide to " redo/ design" the wooden handle and started to remove the screw it was so tightly fitted. I started first manually with an allen key with minimal success. It did not budge.I decided to use allen key bit with my cordless drill. No success. The ultimate decision - saw off part of the handle.Done! right? no,no. Screw was still VERY,VERY dificult to remove. Paint in the tread.... maybe?. Now I have to give more business to Knifecenter. : )

head is laterally screwed into the handle by a tiny hex/star screw...

I haven't had the chance to use this object for its intended purpose, but I have smacked the hammer head and the ax head against wood to simulate camping experiences: after one decent smack, the head is loose and rattles in the handle. This can be temporarily fixed by torquing the star screw tighter into the wood; however, this means that it will eventually burrow far enough into the wood that it will no longer contact the tomahawk head--in essence drilling into the center of the post--which will make the head fall down toward the wrist. I am currently soaking the head in water to swell the wood, and I am going to spike the top, but since the bottom aperture is wider than the top by a lot, I have no idea how efficacious this will be. I do love the weight and balance of this tool/weapon. I do love the handle geometry, which is egg shaped--end on--with the thinner radius toward the ax head and the fatter radius toward the hammer. this lets you feel tool orientation even in the dark. I also love the price, and the coating over carbon steel which makes maintenance easier to prevent rust. If not for the weird lateral screw construction, this tomahawk would have gotten five stars; however, I am a stickler for logic, and an impact tool that has a catastrophic joint failure upon impact is pretty much a toy without some modification.

It's a cheap tomahawk. The edge is beyond dull. I probably shouldn't use it for chopping wood but I have and it's okay for smaller limbs but beyond that, not much. Maybe it's good for throwing but I haven't tried it. The balance seems nice but I don't have anything to compare it to.

poorly made

I bought this partly for the removeable handle, and found that the set screw holding the head on was stripped at the factory. Also the handle doesn't fit the axe head well where it's flared at the end, crudely chipped and splintered. Also not a big deal but they could have sharpened it at least a little? I thought Cold Steel had a great reputation-- not impressed
