Super strong + good value

Super-sharp, well-made knife with usual high-quality CS Taiwanese manufacture. Closing is a bit awkward - be careful the first few times. For this reason it's perhaps not ideal as one's first "proper" knife. Comfortable enough. Full flat grind makes it a *great* slicer. Strong construction - potentially the most indestructible folder at any price. A lot of knife for not too much cash.

Cold Steel Pocket Bushman

This knife is quite minimalistic. Sturdy, tough, strong, and crazy sharp! Nothing fancy or pretty on it. It's a very large locking folder, that can handle large tasks. It's a knife that commands respect and caution with use. Opening and closing should be opened and closed slowly and carefully, with two hands. This is a very serious knife for serious work. Since the handle is a hot spot, I found that a split rubber hose can be slipped over both top and bottom of handle if being used for extended work. Though it was strenuous, I have managed to open it by slowly, using the thumb stud. Over all this is a great, large, locking, heavy duty knife. By our state laws this knife cannot be carried legally (longer than 3".) I recommend using it camping, work, survival and bushcraft. I don't recommend it for people inexperienced with knifes (not a first knife). It requires slow, deliberate, careful opening and closing, and handling. Overall I am more than satisfied with this knife and do recommend it for the experienced user. I plan to carry it in my survival pack, to have a hefty tool as needed.

Cold Steel Pocket Bushman

The Pocket Bushman is a tank of a knife. The blade is made of 4116 steel, a premium steel also known as German Krupp steel used extensively in high end chef knives. Easily sharpened to a razors edge and has excellent edge retention. The Bushman is not a "tactical folder". It takes both hands to close,that being said it makes an excellent hunting,camping,hiking and fishing knife. It also excels as a work knife and everyday carry knife. Being an all steel knife it's virtually indestructible The wedge lock is practically fail proof and about as close as you can get to a fixed blade knife in a folder. The Bushman is a HUGE BANG for your buck. The slim profile makes it comfortable to carry with a pocket clip that has very good retention so it's very unlikely to be lost from falling out of the pocket. It's such an inexpensive high quality knife I suggest getting two. One for your pocket and one for your pack.

Best $30 MSRP folding knife.

Contrary to urban legend, this knife CAN be closed without the lanyard, but its a PITA. The handles are smooth slick steel. There is however a deep finger choil that locks one's hand in place. Judicious use of grip tape gives a drastic improvement. I strongly recommend using a lanyard that will fit around your hand to create a positive stop against thrusting motions if you consider yourself likely to be using thrusting type motions with this knife. One thing not mentioned previously is that the handle is long enough to be used as an effective short stick (kubotan, yawara, etc). By using the aforementioned lanyard looped around a couple fingers The knife can be wielded with a sharp increase in reach and striking power. I value the tendons in my arm too much to see what this knife would do wielded like that in the open position.

POCKET BUSHMAN ON THE JOB

I use my pocket bushman in the oil field to cut heavy hose, rope, cable cover and tarps. I like the size. I can lay a large rope or hose on a 2X4 and whack it with a dead blow hammer. BANG! One whack and I'm done with that cut. It's easy to sharpen with a good steel. Easy to open with two hands. The only thing I didn't like was that it's difficult to unlock but it's part of what makes the lock so strong so I can deal with that. Warning: To all users the knife snaps shut at the end of the closing stroke so you must have your fingers clear of the channel. sounds easy huh? It is so easy I cut the tip of once finger that was slightly handing over in the channel. I know I know you are smarter and would never do this. that's what I said right before I asked my friend for a rag to catch the blood. overall: great knife for the money. Are there better ones? Sure but not at $29 bucks.

This is a great option whenever I need a knife I cam shoot out of a grenade launcher and blow a hole clean through the side of an M1 Abrams battle tank. The lock is strong enough to stand up to a jackhammer. Need to take down a giant red oak? No problem. You needn't even deploy the blade. Just throw this bad boy at the trunk of the tree and run. (It's no fun getting crushed by a giant oak tree.) Tactical use? Again, no need to deploy just throw it at your attacker's head. This knife is guaranteed to concuss. Cheese falls into perfect 12mm slices in the mere presence of the 95FB Pocket Bushman. It's great for EDC. Lighter than a Steinway, thinner than John Goodman.

This is probably the best deal on a knife I know of. It comes shaving sharp. The handle is surprisingly comfortable due to the palm swells. Lock up is very solid. Opening and closing the knife is stiff but i have no problem with it having large hands. I don't use the technique in the video. (1. I cradle the knife like a large sandwich, blade up 2. With my right hand I place my thumb over the stud and index finger curled over the stud on other side, pinching it 3. I pull the cord with my left, until the lock releases 4. Close). That seems safer to me than palming the back of the blade with the potential of cutting your fingers.

This knife is probably the most bang for the buck of all the knives on this site. It's big, it's pretty light, it's sharp, it's monstrously strong, and the price... well, just look! Now, granted, it's not the most comfortable or convenient knife. And, yes, it is potentially dangerous, but thats only if you didn't look at thee directions and aren't paying attention. i have used the knife a lot in the yard and have taken it hiking and camping. It will cut through almost anything and you will not get the feeling that the lock is under strain like you can get with many other knives. It's just a strong, beefy knife at a tenth of the price of knives that are comparable is strength and utility. Also, many say that the knife is hard to open, but I don't find this to be the case. I have small, spindly hands (thats my curse), and I can open the knife with one hand using the thumb stud. Anyway, this knife is awesome. Buy it.

No Frills, No Joke

I wanted a dependable, durable, quality blade that I can take with me everyday and anywhere; So far this knife is the best folding knife I've ever owned. Opening boxes to slicing tomatoes, this is the perfect portable blade. It's a little stiff to open, but it certainly will NOT fold closed on your fingers. Blade is super sharp and high quality, as well as the handle. I am a fixed blade guy and this knife only feels like a pocket knife when its tucked away; Just like it should be! I highly recommend this product for the person who wants a nice sized, hard core blade, that can be tucked away from skiddish eyes.

First week on the job with the pocket bushman

I work in the oil field and needed a large folder to cut rope, hoses, tarps. This is a no nonsense work knife. It's not for tricks, games, fast opening and such foolishness. Just a good solid knife. I watched the stupid videos of a man trying to beat it through a log. They have chain saws now days so only a cave man would attempt to build log cabins with his pocket knife. If you want to beat it through something try an apple or a fat rubber hose. You could not build one for the price. I gave $25 for mine. I love it.

No frills, excellent knife. The blade holds an edge very well and the knife is very well made. The blade lockup mechanism is world class and this knife is not going to fold up on you during use or in a fight. I rate it AAA for over all value and workmanship. I have seen knives in the $100.00 range that aren’t as good as this knife, a very good buy and worth the money. The knife does not come with a sheath, order an extra large nylon sheath from Gerber knifes and it will fit the knife perfectly.

can't peel oranges...too sharp!

EDC...it rides in back pocket really easy...lots better than my XL voyagers...in front pocket its ok...no worse than medium sized 3 inch voyagers. It's a bit too sharp and big to peel oranges...it slices right through them all too easy. Gotta get a duller knife. I can make 1 inch radius s-curves in paper right out of the box. The Bushman drop point seems more handy than that on the Voyager XL drop point and the Bushman lock seems harder and more solid than the Voyager. It feels more like a fixed blade than the Voyager's. The 4116 Krupp steel blade is much sharper than the factory edge on the AUS 8 (A?) Voyagers. The Bushman shaves OK right out of the box. I wasn't used to such sharpness and managed to poke a deep hole in my palm trying to loosen the knife up first day I had it. I was my fault..mishandling...I merely changed hands to better do a two hand close by gripping the blade tip with my Off hand. I snagged the tip on my palm somehow and went in maybe 3-4 mm. Sheesh...watch yourself with this thing...it's not for the unwary. They are a bit scary. To me it cuts like well honed carbon steel. What is the new CTS-BD1 steel going to do...cut molecules? I looked up CTS-BD1 on the Carpenter steel website...the planned CTS steel is high on corrosion resistance but not so much on edge retention. I can't vouch for AUS-8 but the new CTS-BD1 has pretty much the same ingredients as the super edge steels just less of them. I'm guessing baking time for the super steel is longer and makes the steel more expensive...Oh Well....I love Cold Steel prices...nice it's USA steel now...probably from melted down plowshares.

The sturdiest most secure feeling folder ever- closest to fixed blade

There isn't a more solid or sturdy folding knife to be found ANYwhere. That does cause some compromise in the way you have to be really careful to open and close it with both hands (unless you have really really massives hands and finger strength) (bigger than my XL) but it also makes it great for use with gloved hands, in contrast to most if not all liner locking or back locked folders. The blade arrived sharp enough to amputate digits with if not handled carefully and, given the enclosed (and attached around the closed blade and handle) warnings on how to CAREFULLY open and close the knife, you'd have to be a total zero to cut yourself with it then. However, I got a little careless with it a few days later and got a nick for my lapse of attention. My B-I-L was so impressed and complementary of mine, I ended up buying him one too for his birthday. I of course bought it from knife center because there is no lower price to be found anywhere. To be fair, I did find the inside edges of the handle a bit sharp when grasping it for use barehanded, so I used a sandpaper drum on my Dremel to take them down amd round the over just the smallest little bit, which made a huge improvement. That said, the handle was created by folding over a single smooth piece of heavy stainless steel, so it's not very grippy at all, and I am thinking of adding some ridges of Sugru to improve my grip on the metal. All told though this was the sturdiest folder I have ever picked up, and the blade was sharpened second to none right out of the box.

Super tight machining, fit and finish is simply amazing at this price, there isn't a better knife at this price or three times the price in a folder, when the knife is open it's amazingly strong, make sure you get one with the replaced spring mechanism and you're good to go, a little large but i love that, slim design, great company, I'm buying a backup but simply because I just want two.

When open its as close to rigid strength as you are going to get. Be careful closing it. It did truly shave my arm, not pull hair or leave most of it. Sharp as any new Mora. The clip is in the way during use by hand. It needs to come off. Feasible but the tiny allen head screws holding on the clip just deform my allen head drivers rather than come loose. Maybe some heat. This is my second of these and this one still utilized the premium steel that current ones do not. The newer ones probably will do all you want anyway. These are for tool box, truck box, garage peg board etc.It is sharp enough to skin large animals but you have to back pack it as a back up to whatever other knife is on your person. A good idea at that. This knife is perfect for many of us for EDC IF ONLY IT HAD A SHEATH. Cold steel take note. A quick draw weapon it is not. I walk a lot, have to confront vicious dogs. Plenty of time there, and substitutes nicely where a fixed blade would be preferred. Seeing the knife causes dog owners to quickly come to the rescue instead of enjoying your predicament. Custom knife sheath craftsman take note there is a need here. The thing is indestructable. As it ages it wont break your heart because it did not break your bank to purchase.

Reading other reviews most people said it's a huge knife, and you don't really take it seriously until you get it in your hands. This is a HUGE knife. Exactly what I needed too, it's razor sharp right out of the box like all other cold steel products. The clip is very tight on this knife so it will not be coming out of your pocket. The thumb pin for one handed opening isn't very practical for me, it seems like it's placement is too close to the pivot point. Bottom line is, I can't open it that way, might be my weak thumb, but that's just my experience. Overall, excellent knife, I would recommend this knife to anyone who's in need of a large pocket knife.

Seems to me that there are always some negative reviews however personally for me this knife is well put together. I will say it definitely is not a knife for beginners. The opening and closing can be difficult but when you get use to it, it is not that hard. Considering the name is "pocket bushman" for an everyday carry to me might not be the best choice. I use this as a backup carry in my back pocket. Overall all strength is a plus, edge retention is great and it has a very sturdy pocket clip. For the most part if you are using it to clear bushes in your yard a machete would be a better choice. In my opinion it's not a pry bar slash hammer, it's a tool for cutting. Obviously in an emergency situation you would be prone to use it differently. I am a professional truck driver with over thirty years experience and have over one hundred different varieties of knives that I rotate daily for many different uses. For me this knife gets an A+

I was looking for a knife to do some light chores and some farm work and also skin a deer if needed. I like folders so finding the bushman and learning about it's locking system and actually handling one sold me because other knives in the past were made for one purpose at the expense of others. Tough but not sharp.....sharp but not tough....Blade play after about a month or a chip in a high carbon blade; these things turned me off. This knife isn't easy to open and it's not supposed to be. If you try to break this knife, be prepared to use up some vacations days, it takes some work. The mechanics of breaking it are easy, take out the spring....breaking it in use is tough if not impossible.

While I'm not a knife geek like so many on this sight—whose expertise, BTW, has been extremely helpful to me in determining purchases—I do love my blades, and have purchased several in the past year for different functions. Even though I had just purchased a robust Spyderco folder, given my supreme satisfaction with the Cold Steel Trail Master I could not pass up the great deal on this Pocket Bushman. I checked it out pretty thoroughly online before purchasing, but, really, at this price it was a no-brainer out of the gate. Admittedly, the open/close mechanism is awkward, but this is an awesome knife. Even sharper than the Trail Master out of the box (which is saying something), this is definitely a "handle with care" knife. But what a beast! I put it through what I consider to be hard use, clearing out hunting areas, whatever comes along, including harvesting fat wood. I have zero doubt this knife will do whatever I ask of it for years to come, and I intend to purchase another for my truck, and likely one for a BOB I'm putting together. Love the slim profile and fat blade. IF it weren't for the price I would knock it down a notch for the open/close mechanism, but it's such a steal, that's like somebody giving you a Cadillac and b****ing about the color. Also, ignore the YouTube guy who breaks this knife, no normal person would use the knife in the way he did. Dude, you DID bend it, you DID misuse it. Annoying. Anyway, buy this knife, it's the best bargain I've seen anywhere for a long time.

I work for a company that cleans out abandoned homes. I needed a knife that could handle serious work but also protect me if we came upon aggressive squatters. I think the Pocket Bushman is nearly the perfect knife. I use it to pry, cut, hammer, stab, and unscrew just about everything you could think of that you would find in a home. Its locking mechanism is great. It is super strong and reliable. Opening requires two hands to do safely, as well as closing. But if you're looking for a dedicated self defense knife, there are other better candidates out there.

Great, beefy knife!

I recently bought two of these knives. They are great, simply, no nonsense knives. The pocket Bushman is an extremely rugged knife ment to handle anything you can throw at it and still get the job DONE. The knives come shave sharp right out of the box. They are comfortable in hand with palm swells on both sides of the handle. The lock is the most secure, toughest lock I have ever seen on a knife, and I own many knives from different makers. This one is by far the most solid. The lock turns it virtually into a fixed blade, NO PLAY! NONE! That being said, the lock does take sometime to get used to. Once you read the directions and work it a few times, it becomes easier to close. This knife does have a usable thumb stud, although I would recommend using two hands to open and close it. If your looking for a great knife that is basic but beefy, THIS IS IT!

'cuz this thing KICKS A--! I bought this as a cheap heavy-duty "beater" work knife. My job is dirty and sometimes my stuff gets abused just to get the job done. This knife can take it, I'm sure. It's huge, has some weight to it and a SOLID lock, plus it's shaving-sharp out of the box. If you like the old French Douk-Douk or the German Mercator K55 knives, you will LOVE this one. I like it so much, it might become my everyday carry blade instead of my work knife!

If You Could Only Take One Knife...

I took my Pocket Bushman to the Washington Coast recently and spent some happy hours gathering driftwood limbs for making walking staffs. I did a lot of batoning into wet, salty, sandy wood, and the knife retained its edge very well. The saltwater started to tarnish the finish a bit, but I cleaned and re-oiled the whole knife at home before any lasting damage was done. I doubt if fresh water would affect the steel as much, if at all. Naturally, the blade pivot and locking mechanism didn't take kindly to the sandy grit, but it was easy to clean it out. You will never find a tougher folder than this one. It is a large knife, and feels great in hand. The locking mechanism is very stiff and basic, but the knife absolutely will not fold up on you. I'll buy a couple more of these, for sure. Cold Steel is to be commended for producing this elegantly simple, sturdy knife, at such an affordable price.

I'll be honest, I took a shot on this one because it's cheap enough. Some of the reviewers complained about the opening and closing, so I didn't know what to expect. I watched the video though and it looked like the knife was pretty tough, so I went for it. I have to say, I'm really nicely surprised, this has to be the most solid feeling folder at least that I've ever seen. Sure, it's stiff at first, but it works in once you use it a couple dozen times. I find no issue at all with the way it opens and closes. You just have to be careful, just like you are with any knife and especially any assisted or semi-assisted knives. In fact, I find some of the assisted knives to be much more tricky than this one. Keep your fingers out of the way of the blade, just like you do with any knife, and you're fine. The benefit of the locking system is that it really, really locks. No looseness anywhere on this baby once the blade is open. It's pure utility, that's for sure, although it has a sort of "industrial chic" look. My only wish would be that they knurl the scales, as the bare metal can get slippery when greasy. Definitely, absolutely worth the price and I'd buy one again, no problem.

amazing survival folder, great value

I touched up the edge as soon as I opened it(as I do with all of my knives) then went into the woods. After splitting three large logs into kindling, delimbing a small tree and whittling a large pile of shavings for a fire starter I can still shave with the blade. I then opened a tin can with it. The can only caused very minor damage to the edge just behind the tip which was fixed in about 30 seconds with a ceramic stone. During all of the beating and pounding I did on this knife I never once felt the blade lock slip in the least. This is as close as you can get to a quality fixed blade and still keep it in your pocket. My only complaint about the knife is the handle. I understand that they wanted to keep the cost down, however, I would happily pay another $15-20 for a version with a decent set of micarta grips.

WARNING: Owning this knife will make it hard to justify buying any of those other cool expensive knives you want. It does it all for cheap. Locking device is as strong as they come. First thing to do when you get it is to remove the three Torx screw holding on the pocket clip, and put a thread locker on them. They will loosen otherwise and get lost and they're hard to find. Other than that, this is all the knife you need for the apocalypse.

Really Impressed with this knife!

Pondered a long time before getting this knife, could not be more pleased! This is a hefty, beefy folding knife as strong as any fixed blade i have ever used.shaving sharp out of the box. It reminds me of a "folding SRK". I thought maybe the construction would make it difficult or painful to hold while performing strenuous work, but it is a pleasure to hold. The difficulty others have stressed about opening and closing it are exaggerated, if you follow Cold Steel's instructions and treat the knife respectfully, you will be fine. Finally, KnifeCenter's price made it to good to pass up. I will never purchase another knife retail again!

Really cool, tough knife

This is a tough knife! I have hammered it through 14ga sheet metal. I've used it as a prybar. I've used it to cut drywall. For what it lacks in holding an edge it makes up for in sheer toughness and strength, which I value greater than edge retention. The lock is not hard to use. I use it differently than in the product video by holding it as though you are gripping the knife, and placing my thumb on the spine of the blade. I then pull the locking mechanism and push the blade's spine with my thumb. This is easier and quicker than the way they show. The handle is made of a hardened steel, I know as I have engraved it and it was tough as well! It is a good engraveable knife as the entire thing is a clean slate. It is not the most comfortable handle but I believe this is of course due to the fact that the handle itself lends much to the rigidity of this folding knife, so I list the handle feel as a "pro". My only gripe is the joint between the handle and blade. Too loose and it wobbles, too tight and it is a struggle to close. I exchanged one of the PTFE washers with a copper washer because I found that once dirt entered beneath the PTFE washers, it became very gritty opening and closing. While it is slightly tougher to open and close with the copper washer, it is much smoother and will still provide a solid joint between the blade and handle. I wonder if there is some other alternative. Of course, this isn't the most expensive knife, so I would not file my gripe as a "complaint", because for the price point it exceeds it's expectations overall. I have convinced quite a few people to purchase this as well and they were all happy with it, despite at first being irked by the odd closing mechanism, they of course realize its advantages soon enough. Couldn't be happier with it!

it's not a one handed knife.it's not meant to be.i've hand mine for some time now.it has put with a good amount of tough out door use.the lockup makes the knife almost as strong as a fixed blade.i rely on my knives to be ready for life saving uses.i have yet to use this knife as such.however,i am confident to the point that i purchased a second one.as usual the knife center performed flawlessly and with a free gift.can't beat them for service.

Bushman Looks Good to Me

I bought this knife to use a working tool as part of knapsack of gear for hunting, exploring or whatever. Whenever I may need it, I want it to be tough enough to do things you wouldn't normally expect a knife to do. I don't intend to be gentle or careful with it. The knife is solid with some real heft. I fits my hands well and passes the wiggle and rattles tests. The materials seem to be great quality for the price. The locking mechanism is strong. Opening and closing both require your attention. That's OK. It's not going to be my everyday pocket knife. If you go for solid over fancy, this is one to get.

Not easy to open and close, but a very strong tool

An absolutely incredible deal at $30. Strong & very solid capable of real use and abuse. While I cannot say for sure whether "cyro-quenching" really improves the lower-end 4116 blade steel, it has certainly stood up to the punishment I've meted out so far. You need manual strength and dexterity to operate this knife --- closing it in particular isn't very easy, especially when the knife is new. Makes sure to following the closing instru8ctions packed with the knife.

Cold Steel 95FB Pocket Bushman Folding Knife 4-1/2"

This knife is solid and built to last! I have yet to use it in out door usage. I really like the locking of the knife and the pull release of the blade. The handle is very nice and a great surface to do some graving and make a nice design. Can't wait to get into the graving. The cost was super too! A solid utility folder

I've been curious about this knife since it first appeared. It's modeled on the XL-sized "Douk Douk." However, the Pocket Bushman adds a very solid and novel locking system (the Douk Douk is a slipjoint). Although the lock is a bit tight at first, it works in well. Note: This is not a knife for the careless; the lock will snap the blade shut on the unwary. The knife is solid and unobtrusive. With it's robust build, slim profile, lock, and flat-ground blade, I expect it will be the perfect folder for "strolls in the woods."

One awesome knife....once you've worked on it a bit...

This knife is more than great, it is the best folder i've ever owned. It is solid beyond compare, super sharp, so elegant in design it is a work of art. That being said 3 things do detract from it's magnificance: 1. difficulty in opening with the flick of your thumb. however after about 3 applications of WD40 into the pivot pin area and approximately 1000 repetitions of opening and closing with 2 hands, it is now easy enough to open with a single handed purposeful flick of my right thumb, (though I don't think it will ever fly open as quick as some i own which almost feel like they are assisted openers). 2 . difficulty in closing. resolved with wd40 sprayed into the lockingpull out area and again repeatedly working on a retetive motion of a simple 2 handed closing. and lastly 3 the smooth finish can be a little slippery when trying to open, i pull the knife from my back poclet with my pinky in the lanyard loop and when i hold it in my right hand to open it the lanyard is taut around my finger and helps hold the knife steady in my hand as my right thumb flicks the blade open with a distictive THUD. once that baby is open it is as solid as any fixed blade bowie or survial knife i've ever held.

Can't be beat for the price

It ain't pretty, but it's big and tough with a lock that just appears will never fail. The blade is sharp and easy to resharpen when needed. Yes it is a bit awkward to unlock the blade but not that bad, and "can" be done without the lanyard. It's also hard to open with the thumbstuds due to the massively strong spring in the lock system. Do I care?? Absolutely not. Two hand opening is just fine. I'm not going to use this design for "rapid deployment" self defense. It's a superb tool for routine knife jobs. When locked open it "is" an impressive, formidable looking defensive tool and will serve in an emergency. A real PLUS?? It's incredibly inexpensive. I bought several to tuck away in cars, bug out bag, range bag, and pocket carry when desired.

I like that this knife takes after the douk-douk knives in design and durability. The lock mechanism is astounding as well as the price I got mine for $30. This knife out preforms many other knives in the $150-$200 range. Easy sharpening, sharpen it often, the Krupp 4116 steel is durable yet hold a shaving edge. This knife may not be the most user friendly but I doubt any reasonable person would ever need to buy a replacement.

The Pocket Bushman is a serious heavy duty folder without a heavy duty price. Once it's open it's going to stay that way until you unlock it, period. I've been using it when a fixed blade might attract too much attention, and so far I'm well pleased. Opening the knife takes some horse power,but it's certainly possible with one hand. It grips more comfortably than I thought it would. Big surprise... it's not a super slick gentleman's folder. It's a simple well made CHUNK of razor sharp stainless. I recently purchased the Pocket Bushman because I wanted a large flat durable folding knife, this knife meets those needs and then some. I was very pleased to see the sharpness of this knife out of the box it shaved hair. I have used it twice since purchase in August 09 the Scouts like to make primitive type shelters and this knife seems to be made for this. It is not a fixed blade knife put very rugged. If I have a complaint, this knife should have a sheath with it.

Great Knife

I own the first generation Recon 1 with the plain edge tanto blade and I wanted to get the new one for EDC. I always looked at this knife but I really ndidn't think that much of it, so while ordering my new Recon 1 I ordered this knife to use as a work knife but when this knife arrived I was so amazed at the size of the knife and its quality I decieded to put my new Recon 1 away for display and use my new Pocket Bushman for EDC. For the money this is a great knife, don't sleep on it like I did or you just might miss out on a good thing.

I don't have large hands but with just a little practice this knife is easy to open with one hand. The locking mechanism is VERY strong & rugged although you can't close the knife with one hand, the only drawback I found. Use this knife for anything, too large for everyday although if you camp, hike or do any outdoors activity, don't leave home without it. Very sharp out of the box, not the prettiest knife, but I'll trade pretty for rugged and reliable any day. Great all around working knife

This is prob one of the best working knives for the money you can get.Holds a edge,takes a licking and keeps on a cutting.I've field dressed 3 deer so far this year,including spliting the rib cage and all Ive done is touched it up on a fine ceramic cross sticks.Its still razor sharp.It will be going back hunting with me next week.For the price you can give them as xmas gifts which is what Iam doing.Just wish you could get a high quaitily belt sheath for it.I dont know if the cold steel macanall knife sheath will fit it.

Perfect combination of economy and strength

Cold steel has managed to perfect the combination of economy and strength in a folding knife.Although the lock requires strength to operate,it lightens up a bit with use and a little lube.Simply be very intentional and not in a hurry when opening or closing and the ram lock will not be a problem. Deep choil will aid in maintaining strong grip in heavy use,but I think the jury is still out as to whether or not it would function as an instrument of self defense,perhaps in an emergency,but there are better tools for the purpose. Overall,a very strong utility folder that will undoubtedly serve in an outstanding fashion for the price.

Always needs two hands to close. Will never close on you. sharp right out of the box. A lot of steel for the price. I plan on using it as my EDC at work to open and break down boxes. Best damn knife

I always carry a knife for utility purposes(when I don't have one is when I need it the most) The design is perfect with the one piece metal handle,very strong. The blade-lock is the best design on any folder I've ever used. The only stronger system is a fixed blade!!!! I think a knurled surface would improve the grip especially when cold and wet. Other than that it's the prefect carry knife,it's large but it carries comfortable cliped inside the waist band. no sense in having a smaller knife with less strength and grip area. This is a good rescue knife. The price is a steal that's why I purchased two of them!!!! this knife surpasses the strength and quality of other top line brand names out their which I also own......

Cold Steel Pocket Bushman Review

I have been a Communications technician for 30 + years and have always carried a knife for installation and service work. My preference has always been for American made products. I collect knives, so I have carried all the major USA brands. This Cold Steel Pocket Bushman, made in Taiwan has changed my point of view. I can use this knife for any daily chore and not be concerned about the lock failing or damaging this knife in anyway. I can not find any other knife that can hold up the way the Pocket Bushman can. It holds an edge well and I can afford another one if it gets lost. I would really like to see an American knife mfr step up to the plate and offer a knife of this type. This is Mil Spec quality. Impressive, large and razor sharp folder

I knew this was a two hand opener knife. It was hard to pull back the small rope on the handle and I got pinched while trying to open it. Nevertheless, I was impressed by the sharpness and size of this knife. This is a very useful tool that reminds me of a heavy duty utility knife. I would use this knife when camping although I would use gloves for better grip as well as safety. I would like this size knife as fixed blade but not as big as the bushman.

Haven't put it to use yet.. came razor sharp right out of the box. it does take longer then most knifes to open and close. watch out when closing it. it tends to close fast. Cold Steel Quality at 1/3 the Cold Steel price

This is more affordable than other Cold Steel folders thanks to a simplified design. No shortcuts, just simplification. The handle is stamped out of a single sheet of metal, the blade is flat-ground. Nice steel but not as fancy as the AUS 8A that their other folders use. When I think of Cold Steel, I think of a knife that's built rock-solid. One that can take more abuse than any sane person would give it. That seems to be their brand identity ever since they were stabbing that tanto through the car door. And this knife delivers on the Cold Steel identity. Shaving sharp when you get it. After opening and closing it a few times, you'll know there's no way the blade is closing on your hand. As others have said, probably a little big for day-to-day carry. More for a tool/tackle/glove box or a backpack. And it will take two hands to open it. Not necessarily bad, but you're not just going to pull this knife out of your pocket and open a box with it.

1 year ago, I would have never imagined myself even touching the Cold Steel Pocket Bushman, because it looked like a funny knife with the Ram-Safe lock and stainless steel handles. But today, through some fortunate mistake, I have gotten my folding bushman from knifecenter. Man, this thing is built like an AK47, very, very sturdy in hand and only costs about a fraction of those TRI-AD lock knives. Only thing i would have wished for was for the handle to have some traction, but hey, its a 26 dollar knife, just go with it.

Almost my EDC

4 months later...It's just a tad too big for EDC but it's my go to for general construction rehab. It's just the right size and when folded it stays with me...not on the shelf or the floor or the toolbox..and I it doesn't seem to poke holes in the seat if I drive and carry. I can't explain it but It feels really good in my XL hands and in my pockets. Mind you the metal blade point is not a "spike" so don't hammer on it like I did with say the Tanto XL Voyager (when my chisels are the wrong size for cramped work). I think bushman point would bend a bit digging out hard particle board to fit an awkward electrical socket under a sink. Leave that to big Tanto's...(no knives were harmed in these tests). I use the bushman for food all the time...(it's a bushman...what?). It's even wide enough to stick into peanut butter or to slice bread...butter toast...etc. Man it loves the kitchen. Once it dulls a bit...that is...otherwise...straight out of the box.. you'll put a hole in pan...or the cutting board...or the floor if you drop it...and do wear shoes around this thing...one drop the wrong way even kind of dull and you will lose more than a little blood...and you might get hit something..."then one day he was cutting on some food and up from the ground comes a bubbling crude". Oh...because no serrations...it's a dream to sharpen with a steel. Don't go grinding on it either...this thin 4116 steel edge seems to fold over a bit..I think it's ductile...a bit like mild steel. It's tough but not really hard, so sharpening is a waste of metal if you ask me...it just re-profiles for nothing. Just bring back the edge with 2-3 swipes on the kitchen steel and it'll be good to go for the day. Remember...it's a kitchen type steel...it should last a whole meal...if not the shift. Is it better than 400 class steel or AUS 8a? Yes..I think 4116 is comparatively strong and it sharpens easier...I think that's why the blade can be thinner than the Voyagers as a whole and still carry a useful edge. What will the CPM steel be like? I bought oh...maybe 3. I'd buy more but then I'd be another stupid viking knife-nut. (I got off once scott free when TSA found a new 4 inch Mora knife in my violin case...I was afraid they'd confiscate the whole $25,000 violin on the way to a job in Arizona...but I'm old...and I was totally surprised when TSA showed me what they found). Good thing I can't keep guns in the house...who knows where one might get to that I forget. County daycare regs save me and a Bushman is about as dangerous as I can get. Yes...it's a bit clunky but its OK. I'd love a blade shaped a little more elegantly, say like the Boker plus stingray but for $140...fuggidaboutit! Come to think about it...why can't we buy a nice folding Mora for say $15-20? I love that Sandvik sandwich steel even though blades run a bit thick. Who would rid me of these troublesome Moras? My EDC is a 3 inch Tanto Voyager...it's even better than my old 2 3/4 inch Camillius lever flipper...well...except where the Camillius says Made In USA. Sigh.

Since I bought the Cold Steel Pocket Bushman I carry it as my everyday knife. It is big yet it is extremely well made, functional and comfortable to carry when I slip it in my back pocket. It is now my favorite everyday knife. I’ll probably buy a couple more for gifts for my adult sons.

Cold Steel Pocket Bushman

I forgot a few things on my first review. To open and close the knife safely. I recommend two hands. The lock is unique, and requires deliberate effort to close. I see this as a plus. It seems that there is no way that this knife will "unlock" accidentally. Since I would reserve this large knife for larger tasks, I also carry a smaller (3 inch) one hand, locking folder for EDC, I for tasks that require quick deployment of a blade. I am looking forward to putting this knife to the test. But I have all the confidence that it will pass with flying colors!

This is a fine example of very cost effective engineering: A simple, clever strong design. I really hope the Cold Steel people will run with the ball, and perhaps come out with the PB mark II or some such. The new improved model would have: a blade of better steel (S30V ?) and some more thought would be given to the final form of the folded metal handle.

I am really pleased with the CS Pocket Bushman. It's extremely sharp out of the box. Enough to shave arm hair easily. I also like the sleek stone wash look it has. However, the knife is very hard to manipulate with one hand as you might or might not have already heard. I disassembled it and cut about a 1/8" of the spring to counter the resistance. I know this voids any warranty the knife my have, but with it being so cheap in price I wasn't really concerned. Anyway, needless to say it's easier to open now, but now the blade is a little looser once open without those extra ft lbs of pressure the 1/8" of spring provided. Oh well you "can't have your cake and eat it too". Lol

Whaou, what a folding knife ! I was very curious about this knife and it’s special locking system. It is big and strong, I seems it will never unlock once opened. Despite its length its weight is descent. The locking system is amazing and you should be careful when manipulating. But once you know that, it is the strongest folding knife you can find. Great overall no-frills work horse. From the online photo I thought it would be a little smaller but was pleasantly surprised by the size. Fits in the hand well and, with some practice, is easy to open with one hand - assuming you have good finger/grip strength. The only downside is that the handle is slippery, but the finger cutout and size of the handle make it easy to hang on to. Not ideal for cold, wet conditions. Locking mechanism is super strong and works great. Blade is high quality steel found on more expensive knives. Takes a beating, stays sharp. Doesn't attract lots of attention. Something to keep in the truck or with your gear, use it for everything.

It had kept a good edge for my bushcraft hikes. It cleans up well after sappy tree chores. Nice finish. I am trying to like the lock release. Not a one handed knife but it is a good folding backup for my fixed blade. A solid knife and it hasn't let me down.

Must experience knife for any collector.

A legend for many reasons. Absolutely indestructible as a knife. Legendary Demko lockup, a steel that sharpens up nicely and simple design. You have to be careful when unlocking the knife or you could cut yourself, but that also adds to the interest of the knife. I have only used it for some kitchen tasks so far but this knife could do just about anything from slicing to feather sticks, not hing and any Bushcraft tasks. The handle is comfortable but being a folded over one piece design, the bottom is just the two edges of the folded sheet, so the knife isn't for someone to use it all day in a trade, although it would be a comfort issue rather than and failing of the knife.

I put this knife in a BOB after I sharpened it on a belt sander and honed with my Spyderco ceramic stones. The lock seems better than most. It is important to unlock the blade with the knife pointed away from your face or body.

Just a great nuts and bolts type of knife for use around the yard,work shop,and activities in the great outdoors. The knife has a sharp strong blade and locking system. Solid Brute of a Knife

Will be keeping it in my garden tools for pruning and dirty jobs in the yard. Took off one star for almost pinching me before I realized the potential for loss of skin in the lock release process. I don't expect it to be a problem though. Just pay attention when closing which is a 2 hand process. I like that the lock seems bulletproof and handle is smooth stainless for easy cleaning when muddy.

This is a heavy duty folder best used for out door use-a edc it's not! That being said it excels in extreme usage that a folder shouldn't be used in! This is one tough folder that can chop, cut, and be hammered and keep going. The blade holds a edge well and takes to the hand stone well. The locking mechanism takes time to wear in but is extremely well designed(due keep extra lanyard cord handy though). This knife is great for the outdoors man who needs a good tool that takes up little space. Truly a great value.

cold steel got it right with this knife!What a tank, its the perfect all around outdoor/camping knife.The blade locks up real tight and is not going anywhere once the unique lock is in place. I've used it heavily to baton through hardwood and chop, and the knife has performed great every time. you can't beat this knife for the price. The only thing wrong with this knife is the blade steel is 4116Krupp which is a medical grade steel and a little too hard which makes the blade somewhat brittle.My tip does have some very very small cips in it(nothing show stopping)but the belly is solid. All in all if you want a 30$ workhorse you can abuse time and again, then this is your knife.

forget that video on youtube. guy was opening it wrong and of course it broke. another example of someone who thinks they know more about knives than they do and not reading the instructions prior to playing with the knife. i examined it in detail it's a fine design if opened, closed, used the way it was designed. for the price it's a fine pocket carry camping, or woods/swamp walking knife. not good at all for self defense, edc, or fast opening needs. only for walking in the woods, swamps and wanted a large fairly tough knife for certain tasks without carrying a fixed blade. for that application it does well and at the price it's pretty good.

Impressively Well Made

I normally stick with USA made knives and for the most part, never disappointed. This imported, uniquely constructed knife is impressively well made, shaving sharp out of the box and locks open like a bank vault locks shut. I've seen Youtube videos from some famous knife critics that don't favor this knife. Cold Steel has supposedly addressed the spring failure issue that was pointed out in the Youtube reviews, although I have not taken the knife apart to confirm this. I haven't used it yet but it looks and feels very functional. As a builder, I thought I'd add this to my tool belt on my next project.

folding machete!

this is one tough folder. im in the woods alot, and do alot of survival training, so i like knives that can really take a beating. this one pretty much takes the prize. ive used it to take down small trees, split branches, clean fish and game, accidentally hit it on rocks, used it totally submerged in water, really beat the crap out of it and it has not shown a bit of wear, other than needing resharpening of course. i agree with dan the lock is a bit tough to use, but is undoubtably strong, and gets easier to use with practice and lots of oil. this is a must have knife for any outdoor enthusiast, in a survival situation would be worth its weight in gold!

A good knife at a good price.

This is a very solid well built work knife. I would have gladly paid double for this type of quality in a pocket folder. Comfortable grip, nice blade finish, bronze washers not platic, very solid lock up with no play, wow! Just a very tough simplistic work knife. There is nothing tactical about it, deploys and closes slow which is fine because other options are out there. My only con and or reason for a 4 star rating is I wish the blade material was cold steels aus8 and not krupps 4116. That would make this a remarkable knife(hint cold steel;) ), but again for the price you won't be let down. Also arrived sharp out of the box and the pocket clip is perfect for EDC. A BIG Surprise

I thought this would be a nice pocket knife and it is-- just a lot bigger than I expected. It's also a bit on the heavy side for a pocket folder, but that's simply because of the amount of steel in the blade and handle. The locking system is excellent-- there's no way the blade will be accidentally unlocked. The blade is also EXTREMELY sharp. Great value. Opening the knife takes a bit of effort-- it's clearly not designed for fast deployment. The blade is also a little Can't think of any significant negatives.

Good value

I will use this for camping and some heavy duty stuff around the house. It is sharp like a razor out of the box - surprisingly so for such a large blade. Fits the hand very well and is proving to be excellent at carving wood. Edge is holding up well. I have very mixed emotions about the locking sytem. On the positive side, when it is open it is nearly as solid as any fixed blade, on the negative, it is a bugger to open. I have not yet been able to open it one handed and have tried loosening the screw to no avail. Given the way I intend to use it, I think the trade-off will be worh it.

Great knife for the moola, just be really careful closing it. I had a few drinks and ended up with six stitches in my left index finger, nicked the nerve and the tendon. I know, I had read the reviews and thought I was too experienced to let such a thing happen, but it only takes one slip. But it's damn sharp, I'll tell ya that!

cold steel has great products and are a great value yes there are more expensive knifes out there but sometimes you don't want to carry a cheap knife and you don't want to take an expensive knife that you will really miss if you lose this knife is great for the price and very well made a real work knife

I have been playing with it for about a week now; The Kalashnikov is known for being stupid simple, cheep & working no matter what. Thats how I feel about this knife. If cold steel made a 3 1/2" I would buy it and throw out my kershaw.

Great for some, not for everyone.

I owned and carried this knife for a few years. I have a lot of good things, and bad things to say about it. The blade shape, grind and sharpness are top notch, exactly when I like in knife. Full flat ground, functional clip, good belly, and reasonable thick. The handle is very tough, and relatively slim for it's size. I enjoy a large and long handle to get better leverage when hacking/chopping, and because I have large hands. However, it is very uncomfortable to use when doing a lot of heavy carving. I tended to wrap a bandana or other material to wrap the handle in to keep my hand from getting sore. The handle also transmits a lot of vibrations when trying hack into hard/dried wood. The open/close mechanism is very stiff, but strong. It does wear in very well though. I am able to open it one handed, but it takes a lot of thumb strength. I know a lot of people who still can not do it one handed. Closing it is unique, and once practiced is easy, but absolutely requires two hands. Not something I like in a most folders. 4116 Krupp is a good steel for what it is, but AUS8 would've nicer. I would give this blade a 3 out of 5, except for the price. At a price point under $30, it is a great blade. That bumps it up a point in my books absolutely.

This knife is heavy enough to do most camping chores. Right now, being it's new, it's a bit stiff and hard to open, but I suspect with use it will get easier. The same can be said about closing this knife.

I didn't think , that out of all the folders I bought, that one would be so... HUGE ! Sharp out of the box. Looks like a machete! Hard to open and close though. Because it's scary, I always try to be veryyyy careful with it. I guess a bit of WD40 wouldn't hurt , cause for now it's a two-handed opener and closer. Will definitely take this on a camping trip, to cut down trees, and stuff. Awesome.

Get a svord peasant knife or a douk douk

The svord peasant knife has a superior blade steel to this one, is significantly cheaper, and is also offered by knifecenter. Cold Steel always advertises their knives' lock strength, but if you use a knife correctly, you should really only need enough strength to keep the blade from falling into your hand. This is not "tactical" or anything, so why sacrifice blade quality for this locking mechanism when you could get a friction folder and have 95% of what you pay go directly towards the business end of the knife, rather than 50% go to the mechanisms and 50% towards blade steel? Laci Szabo makes a french knife called a Douk Douk. It comes it different sizes and blade steels (high carbon or stainless), and performs 15 times better than this knife. Just some options to consider.

A chunk of a knife...

I bought this as a hard working knife here on the ranch that I wouldn't have to worry much about. It is a BIG and HEAVY knife. Outward appearance is, well— cheap. You can pretty much forget about one-handed opening. It's rough, hard, and doesn't work well at all for that even after lubrication. Opening like a Barlow works fine (two handed), but it's still not very smooth. The strange closing method (tugging HARD on a lanyard to release the lock) can make for some frustration and as others have said BE CAREFUL as the knife is very sharp. For the price I have no complaints and I'm pretty sure it will hold up well.

I purchased this knife because I really like Cold Steel products, but like all Cold Steel knives, this thing was huge. As a police officer, I am supposed to keep inside the law. When this knife arrived, I thought, ok it's big but it fits well in the pocket. Then I attempted to close it. Who in their right mind would ever come up with such a system? This is dangerous! Anyway, a friend who is a collector benefitted as I gave it to him.

It is overall an excellent quality knife

The handle is remarkably comfortable and ergonomic for a folded-up piece of metal. Size and weight is great for a full-size folding knife, with a very slim profile that fits easily into your pocket. The lock - while I have no doubt it is extremely strong and durable, it is very stiff and not the most user-friendly design in the world. You DEFINITELY want to read the enclosed instructions before trying to use the knife, and even then it takes a bit of getting used to. Closing is the difficult part. It is overall an excellent quality knife, and one you would expect to pay more for than you do.

This is an amazing knife. Big strong and dam sharp. Bye it by all means but in closing the fold keep fingers clear and hold back of the handle only. The spring for the lock release is very strong and with wet or sweaty hands and fingers in the wrong place you will also receive 15 stitches on one finger.. nice knife tho....

Pinch Point

I wish I knew before I purchased this knife that it bites!! The rear of the knife has a pinch point and if you are not careful it will get you. I have gotten pinched if I didn't first think about it and made sure my palm was higher up so when the blade is loose and the lock is released I won't get nipped. This is a bargain basement knife that stands up to heavy duty cutting and for the price might be worth it. I would rather have a locking folder like a buck 110 and know I am safe from my tool biting me.

i barely used this knife at all and the edge of the blade got small chips in it right away.the blade geometry is wrong for this type of steel it makes the edge of the blade far to weak. would be fine for light game prep or carving but this is defiantly the rough use type of knife that cold steel claims. as for the knife center a different story altogether easy to order shipped right away got here quick no problems whatsoever

You absolutely HAVE to use two hands to close this knife and if you don't practice a certain technique, you could severely cut your fingers. I don't see all the hype about Cold Steel.

Blade broke

I hade this for a couple of years and liked it for general stuff , despite the awkward and kinda dangerous locking system. Blade broke when I hacked at a vine when clearing vines off of a tree in my yard. It chipped right in the middle of the blade edge. I was surprised that a "pocket Bushman" could not hack a wisteria vine without chipping. These knives are kind of neat, but crap quality. Handle is big and slick, blade OK unless you use it for um...treating like a knife you could use in the bush. If you see these on sale, there's a reason. Maybe mine was made on a Monday or something, but I have never seen a knife blade chip when not abused. I kept the knife, just to remind myself to never buy another. First Cold Steel knife I ever bought from Knifecenter, and last.

this is a poor knife to rely on in a wilderness area

185 grams 150 mm closed (a large folder), 265 extended Grip is fair for an all-steel handle; edges of open size don't permit a tight grip, but slight swelling in midbody is helpful. Lockup is tight; no wobble. Thumb stud is nearly useless; opening is strictly a two-hand operation unless your hands are unusually strong, long and insensitive to pain. The Taiwanese blade is up to Cold Steel's recent standards and was shaving sharp out of the box. The unusual release mechanism requires the user to secure the knife in one hand and pull the locking bar, which extends out of the handle, to the read with the other. There is a short nylon cord to assist with this, and it's absolutely necessary as it requires in excess of 5 kg to release the detent. If the cord should break, it may not be possible to close the knife. Holding the knife securely while doing this is not easy, and the smooth steel surface does not help. In cold or wet conditions, slippage is very likely. Despite its macho name, this is a poor knife to rely on in a wilderness area.

Pocket bushman. A big disappointment.

I am an experienced woodsman and also a blacksmith. I used the knife within normal limits while getting a walking stick cut out of woods. A knife advertized as robust should be so. I dug around the roots energetically in dry soil to expose the lower part of tree to the saw. that way I can use larger part as a knob head after a bit of shaping. The blade bent several degrees out of true at the tip. This was within normal limits advertized by Cold Steel. I have never been an advocate of ridiculous torture tests for a knife. Summary. My pocket bushman was a piece of junk that I put back in the box and in a drawer. I would not carry it in any survival situation or for normal use for that matter. Big disappointment. The blame rests with Cold Steel.
