Good tool

One thing I couldn't Click as a pro/con The handle on this is quite large. I have Large hands but Dang this thing is big. Nice weight. It most definitively is a Machete. I took it to the field already and hacked through logs, Plywood, brush, and other natural Material. And Aside from the finish (Worn in, but that is expected) this thing is holding up amazingly well. Even more so than my 18 inch Latin Machete from CS. This is my new favorite toy. (Got the Condor Cutlass as another purchase along side this one.) From what I understand also, is the tang runs through the entire Hilt and Hand guard and it feels like it does too.

You really need to own this blade. It is too blade heavy for my ancient fighting arm but that is corrected below. The blade is strong and mine is convex sharpened. An edge that will last for a long time if you know how to sharpen convex edges. The same edge that Japanese blade makers use. Take the time, it is worth every hour of practice and the new skill will increase your knowledge of blade edges. Because the blade is tip heavy, I plan to take mine to a machine shop and have the blade cut to 18". I will then have them apply a tanto tip at a 45 degree angle. I will then have the machinist put a thirty degree inclusive, 15 degrees per side, edge on the blade. It will then fit into a GI plastic machete sheath at maximum length. I love these sheaths for machetes. Just cut to length. I will let you know how this turns out.

Easy to recommend

I have been playing with this machete for about a week now and I have to say, I really like it. First however I will say that it came with a very coarsely sharpened edge; but for me, sharpening up a new toy is half the fun so all is well. The handle feels solid an robust and the blade seems durable but I haven't tried to cut anything large yet. The balance point is 6.5 inches forward of the handle for those who may want it as a play sword to take hiking. If your electric hedge trimmer has gotten boring; you should buy this machete.

Good deal on a good blade.

Good and heavy blade. Blade needed to be de-burred out of the box. Holds and edge very well. Have used it quite a bit since purchase and performs very well. Handle needs some stipling for grip. And over all is heavy duty and heavy weight wears you out pretty quick. Performs as expected great quality to price ratio.

I can finally be a pirate... XD

Ah... Perfection ^^ I put my blades through a lot of work in the forests surrounding where i live, and this newest addition performs most admirably. Came sharp out of the box, went over it a few times with a DMT diafold diamond sharpener to hone the edge a bit; cuts like a razor :) after trying it out, mostly on deadwood and thick branches; i'm thoroughly impressed with how it performs. I expected some wobbliness but it doesn't shake at all, real sturdy piece of steel (^_^) No real damage to it so far (except a very small chip where i missed a tree and hit a rock :p.... You should see the rock, actually gave it a small gash O_O) Final word though: pay attention to how you swing it. I've noticed it won't cut as effectively if you swing it like a heavy duty chopper ^^

Excellent, fun machete!

This item is useful for many things, from brush clearing to boarding a Spanish Galleon! It is well made and comes with a useful edge (for once!). I think I like everything about it except the sheath which is a bit flimsy. The Saber style of blade lends itself to continuous cuts as your swing progresses and is an excellent choice for many types of dense/heavy vegetation.

Affordable version of 1917 cutlass

I really liked the 1917 cutlass but could not justify the expense. So when I saw this I had to have it. This machete is tough. There are some wicked videos on you tube using this thing. Out of the box the edge is a little rough but it didn't take long to clean it up nicely. Its a little bigger than I thought but not too big. Bad a** machete for the money. I'd recommend to a friend

24" of lethal 1055 steel....

...the brush in my yard is toast; help the poor soul that enters to cause harm...this is 24 inches of pure 1055 lethal steel with steel reinforced knuckle bow guard...I honed the edge just a touch, added a loop of paracord ..balance is about 6" in front of handle, but adds chopping power being a little blade heavy...this is a workhorse ! '30 bucks'...a no brainer... must also mention great folks at Knife Center; thanks.....

surprise

I bought this because I lacked a sword like this. and since I was buying the cold steel Gladius I might as well throw this in. I didn't know what I was missing. This thing chops better than any machete. I can chop down a whole banana tree in one stroke. and it stabs and the hand guard makes a good brass knuckle. I really like the way this feels it is a great weapon and a great tool. so useful Feels like it was made for me maybe I was a pirate in the past. Might be my new favorite sword.

Great value for a bare bones cutlass

It is hard to believe that Cold Steel can sell this at the price they do. This is a knockoff of their 1917 Navy cutlass. The blade is not as thick as the blade on the original but it is substantial. Destruct tests on other Cold Steel machetes made from the same 1055 show it to be tough as h#ll and this goes through briars and thick weeds with ease. The poly hand grip and guard is metal lined but slippery as there is no molded in checkering. This is easy to rectify with some handlebar grip tape. Like most machetes, you have to put an edge on the blade. Mine came up razor sharp in a very short time on my paper wheel. The sheath is cheap but serviceable and it lashes up easy to my evac bag.with a few zip ties. All and all a surprisingly good tool for the money.

Impressed to say the least

So I just got my cs cutlass machete in the mail a couple days ago and right out of the box, I fell in love. The sharpness is amazing, though there was a bit of burr on the edge. But a little time with a whetstone takes care of that. I was impressed by how little energy it took fo it to cleave a water bottle clean in half. I have had other products do the same, so, I thought I'd up thet ante. I grabbed a spare gallon water jug from my stockpile to see if the new acquisition could tackle this obstacle. First swing just knocked it over but made a cut... second swing, I used both hands (since I'm a smaller guy). The cutlass went clean through and I was absolutely floored. My only concerns was that the scabbard leaves just a bit to be desired and the handle material can get slippery. But that was a quick fix with some gause tape I bought at cvs... great job, Cold Steel and many thanks to knife center! I'll definitely be shopping more from y'all!

very good

It is arrived yesterday and now I have this sword/machete in my hand asking myself: why I didn't bought two or three of them? The size and shape of a sword can intimidate but is a machete with all the limits of a machete( weight, blade thickness, flexible) so with a sword have little in common beside the shape but as machete can be very useful on thick brush and aI mean very thick brush where other machetes can surrender. The machete come " utility sharp" which mean you must sharp for yourself if you want to cut something more than butter. The sheat is nylon, nothing of special but for the price is much, much better of expected and look well done and durable. Very good work CS!!!!Service on Knifecenter was, as always, excellent.

Cutlass

The blade is a good thickness but the sharpness from Cold Steel is poorly done compared to the Condor Cutlass. Nice design overall. Poor design in the sheath. Condor has a very nice sheath. I can't understand why CS goes so cheap on their sheaths. Very poor sheath quality. Other than the sheath the Cutlass will do a great job cutting after you spend a little quality time on the blade touching it up.
