Reliable Workhorse Kukri

I’m amazed that there are 80+ reviews for the regular Cold Steel Kukri, and zero for this one! I have used both versions, so let me enlighten all you grasshoppers... For 9 months I have carried this in my camping/survival bag and use it mostly for chopping wood, sometimes for clearing brush. For these purposes, it is truly excellent - as expected from a 13” Kukri. I put a lanyard on the handle which completely secures the machete to my wrist. If I drop the machete, it just dangles from my wrist. This, along with the finger guard and the aggressive texturing on the handle, makes the machete extremely safe to use. If safety is important to you (which it should be), this version is safer than the regular Kukri due to the added finger guard. The Kukri Plus has a sharper tip and slightly less belly than the regular Kukri, but seems to be equally good at chopping & cutting. Although I have never used this machete for any real combat situations, I have practiced using it in such a way, and can assure you that it would be very useful for self-defense. With the aforementioned features, no one will take it from you, and it is light enough to stab and swing with great speed and agility. One possible downside is that the handle material doesn’t have a soft feel to it that some might prefer. It is like a hard plastic with fairly aggressive texturing. While grippy and extremely durable, it’s not the most comfortable handle in the world. However, a huge bonus is that all versions of the Cold Steel Kukri have pommel swell on their handles just like traditional Nepalese Kukuris, allowing you to maximise centrifugal force when chopping. The Cordura sheath is practical and works well. It’s easy to slide this into your pack or hang it off your belt. But there’s no Molle attachment options or lashing points, so keep that in mind. The final “con” is that the edge did not arrive sharp enough to cut paper. However, I was not expecting such sharpness from a $20 machete, and 1055 steel is very easy to sharpen if you feel the need. Overall I can highly recommend this machete to anyone looking for a very affordable workhorse chopping machete that can also cut and be used for self-defense. It might just be the best $20 I ever spent.
