I didn't buy Douk-Douk from Knifecenter.com only because they didn't have it then. This is time proven design, highest quality you can find in knife industry ( they're all still made in Thiers, France). There is no lock but the spring is very very strong and it will feel like it has a lock. Saying that, I must say this knife is not to be used as tool that you smack with hammer, this one is more like scalpel blade... it has beautiful blade geometry ( I am talking 3-D, not just what you see on picture), it has perfect size, not small but not to big, it fits in pocket.. You can't flick it or open it one handed, but this knife is not ment to be used like this. But, make no mistake.. this is classy item.. you can have it in your jeans, or ( as I did :) - carry it with you with tie and suit and cut your steak in restaurant. And, I did HHT on it and it passed. I could tell you more, but if you want knife that has it all, quality, soul, feel, this is the one. One more thing, if you buy it and then give it one star because " you like your kershaw or benchmed better because it has lock, it has zytel handles,,," or some other comment like this - you have no clue about knives.. This would be like comparing Keurig coffee machine vs. coffee percolator. Good job Knifecenter! Finally!!!!

Gave this knife to my fiancé as a Christmas gift and he loved it above all gifts! He’s a knife enthusiast and has many pocket type knives. He loves this one the best. He loves the slim shape and the unique design. What an interesting history as well!

Timeless and Functional

This is a knife with taste. First impressions may seem strange as it is not a modern whiz bang extreme tactical design. However a pocketknife need not have all those super features to make it work. Carbon steel excellent blade choice, cuts like a razor out of the box. Thin and lightweight you hardly notice your carrying it. Cool "douk-douk" design on handle evokes exotic lands. Great price too. A must have.

It's the classic you'be never heard of.

The douk douk is the classic you've never heard of! The douk is a knife with a romantic history, starting in 1929. It was first produced in Thiers, France by M.C. Cogent as an inexpensive utility knife for the average working man. It is comprised of only six parts, and so it is extremely robust and reliable. Upon it's blackened handle is the douk douk, a with doctor representing the Melanesian god of chaos and doom. Intended for the market in the French colonies in the pacific, the knife was however unsuccessful, the natives being none too keen to have the representation of a god of chaos and doom upon their cutlery. However, the knife did have great success in the French North African Colonies, so much so that the term due douk has become synonymous with knife regardless of whether or not it is in fact an actual douk douk. The knife has been used by French Legionaries and Algerian rebels aike. The Algerian rebels could turn this knife into a quasi fixed blade by crimping the metal handle directly below the blade. Made of a c75 carbon steel blade the douk came with a "utility" edge. With some basic stones I was able to put a hair shaving sharp edge within a few minutes...and due to its slightly hollow ground profile this knife is one of the sharpest knives in my collection. My one and only complaint is, that if you cut something greasy, unless you wipe the blade off extremely well, the next time you need to open your knife will be extremely difficult due to the stiff spring and the lack of nail notch or a thumb stud. Other than that I love this knife, and at this price you can get one for your rough tasks and spare your super steel modern tactical folder the indignity.

Great knife for emergency or bug out kit. Light weight, slim profile but nice thick blade that takes a great edge. The thin handle takes some getting used to, but you can stash one of these about anywhere and have a good blade on hand that is nearly indestructable. For edc they make a nice change of pace and the blade shape is kind of cool too.

Good collectors knife

I bought this more as a collection piece. It is a nice knife to have but somewhat impractical especially if you are use to more traditional folders. The action both opening and closing is very stiff. I was almost afraid I was going to cut myself just trying to close it. Other than that aspect of the knife I have no additional complaints. The blade takes a razor sharp edge Once honed. It's a great tradional knife that is better suited for non edc needs.

Lightweight, oldschool folding knife

This knife is a great edc knife if you are in to classic folders. It has no pocket clip, but it's very slim and light and does not feel bulky in your pocket. There are no locking mechanism for the blade, but you need to apply quite some preassure to open and close it, so the chance for it to accidently close over your fingers, or open by mistake in your pockets is very unlikly. The blade came semi sharp, but it's no big deal to touch up the edge. Carbon steel shapens easily. It is not as rust prone as many other carbon steel knives, but need proper care.

Like a best friend

I bought this knife from knifecenter a year or so ago, at the recommendation of my brother. He loves his. At first sight, I was unsure about its not having a lock, but I was immediately surprised (and relieved) at the strength of the entire knife. The slip-joint HOLDS the blade both open and closed with AUTHORITY. The handle is a very solid, and fairly thick, single piece of steel. I have no worries whatsoever that it will close on my hand unexpectedly, and it will be impossible for it to accidentally open in-pocket. As for the blade itself, I have no explanation for just how sharp it gets. Its edge is terrifying. In fact, I shave with it once in a while just to say I did it. In short, this knife is extra-strong, extra-sharp, and extra-affordable. Get three and stow them where your life depends on it. back to basics folding field knife

This is an excellent general purpose pocket knife for outdoors. The blade is high quality and very sturdy. The construction is solid, but the folded knife is slim and easily carried. The handle spring is quite stiff, making it slow to open and close. There is no lock or handle clip. It is not stainless steel, so one has to clean and dry the knife to prevent rust.

Affordable and historic.

Great knife to have around, and affordable too. The "locking" mechanism is firm. Be careful to check for burring on the back of the blade. I cut my thumb opening ad closing it before I noticed this. No big deal, just check yours first before fondling it too firmly. I filled mine down a bit and it didn't hurt the appearance. C

good work knife

Several years ago I had several knives like this that I used in my commercial fishing business for net repair work. They held an edge well, could be worn on a lanyard around your neck, and, best of all, cost about $2US.
