The Gerber 06 was a little stiff (to open and close) when I pulled it out of the box but after opening and closing it(putting it to work) after a short time the knife started to open and close more freely. Compared to the Cold Steel Recon 1 knife I prefer the Gerber 06. It is a good knife and well worth the money.

I carried this knife on the job, the edge is very sharp and does what a good knife should. The knife may have been to good, it was stolen. Very trustworthy knife, when I would forget to clip it to my pocket I felt 'naked' even though when off duty I conceal carry a Taurus .45.

Pretty good knife so far, I have not had too much experience with it yet though. It would be better with rubber handles, but as it is it is a very good knife for the money. Lock is somewhat hard to push.

This is a great knife, very sharp right out of the box. I love the size and heft of it. I am sure it will be able to do what ever I need it to. The only complaint I have is the little lock 'button' kind of stubborn sometimes.

This was my self defense carry knife for a long time, and I still love it! The assisted opening still works well after all these years and, although slower than an auto-opening, it opens fairly easily with a single swipe of my thumb. I seldom use the knife for general tasks, because of the difficulty in sharpening a tanto and serrated blade. However, without abuse the blade has held up well for minor cutting tasks. The clip position means that the end of the knife protrudes from my pocket (so not very discreet), but it also means that my little finger hooks very comfortably around the knife when drawing, which makes for a speedy and controlled draw every time! Also, the guard ensures that there's no danger of fingers sliding forward onto the very sharp blade. The window / forehead breaker make for another useful tool in various crappy situations. I LOVE my FAST 06!

I recently purchased a Gerber '06 F.A.S.T, G-10 Black, 3.8" Tanto Combo. I'm a former Special Operatations Soldier. I served 16 years. How I wish there were '06's back 'in-the-day' AND a customer oriented company like 'K.C.'. The '06 is a superlative knife. It's my "Go to" knife. The handles are virtually unbreakable, as its accidentally fallen from my vehicle & run over without blemish. The blade is s30v.... Need I say more (2nd best blade metal in the world!) it holds an edge even with monumental abuse. No rust when it's left in the rain. This knife takes the abuse of vehicles, use as a pummeling device, as a screwdriver, it cuts everything with exception of metals (other than aluminum). I would recommend it to anyone from a collector to fair-weather-outsider to an enthusiast!

When I first got the knife opening and closing was a chore as the locking button is very stiff. However once you work with it, it does free up and becomes easier as you use the knife. I find the knife somewhat heavy but again it's a get used to it thing. The blade is super and very sharp Like the Gerber more every day!

I have found ONLY one very small problem. The tip of the pocket clip needs to angle outwards slightly more than it does for easier pocketing. I have used my 06 FAST for opening MRE's, cutting wire, skinning game. Even got to try out the glass breaker on a junker car. I suggest gloves if you do this because the glass breaker goes thru glass like the blade does skin. Quick and easily. Holds a great edge & if it needs sharpened it is easily done on a diamond steel

I don’t use a knife for work. My interest is self defense. I have several high end custom knives that are similar to this Gerber (I bought the tanto blade/G10). I find this knife to be a very good value. The piece I received had no problems out of the box. The handles feel good. The blade is sharp and the knife locks up strong. I think it opens plenty fast. The balance and weight are perfect for me (I wear a large shirt). I don’t think you can go wrong here. Some might think it heavy for an EDC but for my purposes it’s not a concern. Knife Center got it out fast after very good customer service answered a couple of my questions. I’m satisfied with this purchase.

I am a faithful Gerber owner going on my 5th year with this very knife. This knife gets use from outdoor, construction, recreational, and as protection. Comfortable in the hand, though it will take singe time and use to break in. Only downfall I've found is upon accidental drop, the knife can, and will asy times open unexpected. But all in all I'd Highly recommend!

I've been carrying this knife for about a week now, I bought it to use as a cheap beater at work instead of my Griptilian or Foresight. For the price, it isn't bad at all. Sure the 7CR steel is lacking, but it works for its intended purpose. I've beat the snot out of this knife and it's still ticking fine, I just strop it after I get home from work (I cut wire, twine, boxes, shrink wrap, and thin plastic) on a daily basis, I've had no problems with the lock, the assist is fine, it isn't super fast, but it isn't slow either. Zero blade play out of the box, but unfortunately only a tip up right hand clip. I bit the bullet in trying this blade, and I wasn't disappointed.

This knife isn't bad. I always have mine in my pocket and use it at work regularly cutting straps, shrink wrap, and plastic. Out of the box the blade was very sharp, but I feel like the quality of the metal is really lacking. It's very easy to wear the blade down after repeated use compared to other knives. The handle is sturdy and feels good, but the clip isn't very useful. After a few years the action still feels great, but there is a slight lateral movement to the blade. Overall I'm satisfied with everything aside from the quality of the metal. Great for self defense, and light duty, but not a great knife for work.

great knife... i dont know about u guys but i think u all got a bad batch of this knife... JOHNNY ur using the loock too much without oiling it... the powdercoat finish absorbs oil after a few months... itl be a little stiff when right out of the box. every knife is because just like a sitting car. if it sits for a while the parts arent gunna work well right away... if u get the chance to open it up look how complicated yet durable the construction is... just make sure ur a mechanical person lol. but the only thing is the handle is kinda slippery when wet. i would have used a t74 rubber instead... it absorbs less and reflects more... and also the point of the lock being on the grip like that is ease of securing the blade with one hand... i dont concider myself a knife expert but i do know a good knife when i see one... i give it a 9.5 or a 10.

I have a few Gerber knives and one Gerber multi tool. One thing they all have in common is that they are well built with quality materials and overall good design. The Gerber 06 FAST™ 3.8" Black Tanto Combo Edge Blade, with G10 Handles is on the large side, has a great look and feels and fits well in your hand. The clip is fixed correctly so that when the knife is drawn from your pocket it's already in the correct position in your hand. My only gripe is that it can be difficult to open the knife quickly, due to placement of the thumb studs. The locking mechanism works, but is not very smooth. Overall a great very solid knife, and would recommend even with it's imperfections.

Gerber vs SOG
I bought this knife to replace my SOG Aegis tanto I lost. Out of the box, this Gerber was not as Sharp as the SOG and the serrations were not as Sharp either. I sharpened them and now they're sharp, but it took a little work. The action of the spring assist is nice and tight. Lock is tight, but now I've used the knife and carried it for a couple of weeks, I have noticed a little play after the blade locks open. The handle is Very nice and is easy to get a good grip! G10 should be on every knife! Overall, its a good knife but a lil disappointed with out of box sharpness. I would give it a 3.5 but I can't.

i like the 06 & dmf series tanto blades they pierce great and cut even better. the only beef i have with this knife is the locking mechanism. though ive had no problem with this knife one of the last knives from gerber i had with this mechanism literally fell apart. however gerber has great customer service and warranty. so if it does snap il be getting another one

I could not pass up this assisted opener. My first one. It's a good knife but I would recommend the Cold Steel AK-47 for better heft and materials, plus the blade deploys like lightning without assistance and the complications a spring might develop over time.

Generally, this knife has a great in hand feel and weight and the blade shape is excellent. The assisted opening mechanism is awkward and I think it would probably be better if it had no assisted opening mechanism at all but I can live with it. When you start pushing the stud with your thumb it takes a little pressure to get started and then it kinda takes off but not usually enough to open all the way. It can get ahead of your thumb and if you keep pressing you might press into the blade instead of catching up with the stud again but it still has another 10 degrees or so to get it all the way open. So you can see what I mean when I say it might be better without that and you just push all the way to open it. But other than that, great feel and weight and blade shape.

Solid, Heavy Knife
The FAST action works well in this knife. The blade is heavy and strong. Overall, the knife may be a bit on the heavy side for everyday, small tasks but it is certainly up to the large jobs. The blade is very sharp upon receipt, including the leading edge of the tonto. Cons: I had to send this in to Gerber a few days after purchase. The release stud is loose and 'grinds' when the blade is in the open position, attempting to close. I had to bend the pocket clip out a bit to get over the pocket seam on my jeans.

Blade is very versatile and holds its edge. Thumb lock mechanism was very rough and jammed often until lubed. Assist is good but the thumb knob could be a little larger or have a better shape to initiate the assist.

For the price, this knife will get the job done. However, if you are looking for a long lasting knife, this is not for you. First, the pros. This knife is a decent price if you consider the materials that were used in the making of it. It is a decently heavy knife and looks great. The g-10 handles are what really makes the knife and give it a good grip. The serrations will help get any tough job done. Now the cons. The steel is of low quality and needs constant sharpening, assuming you know how to sharpen a half serrated tanto blade. If you've done any research on this knife, you would notice the blade steel is a measly 440A but not before you have looked very long and hard since most sites will not disclose the steel type. The lock switch has a cheap feeling, is pretty hard to operate, and gets stuck sometimes. The overall construction of the knife is a disappointment. After having mine for only a couple months, some of the threads on the screws became stripped and caused the knife to loosen up and fall apart from the inside out. Overall, as my own personal opinion from my one and only experience with this knife, this knife is a good design but not well built. I love this style blade and really wanted to love this specific knife but just couldn't. however, if you like this style l do, Gerber does make a better version of this knife that I highly recommend researching.

this isn't a crappy knife but I've owned other Gerbers and they've all functioned great. This one the blade didn't open that well and had the most of its spring at the early opening and then got sluggish at the end - which is where it really needs to snap and lock solid so you know it's safe to then handle / won't go folding back on your fingers. The size and shape of the knife is great, it's the assist that fails on this one. probably should just have a stronger spring in it.

This knife was a great knife until it snapped. I went down south to go camping, i was sharpening sticks to roast marshmallows and the tip snapped off after the 4th stick. The metal used to make this knife looked very powdery, didn't even look like a metal. No more china made knives for me.

not a bad knife for the price. blade feels a little short for the design though. to me that is. the "fast" opening is not a bad system, but the lock feels much too loose. having said that, with the pocket clip design when you stick it in your pocket the force will keep it locked...when you pull it out it can and does occasionlly unlock it. not a big issue though as the assist spring works well, but it takes some thumb force to get it to pop open really fast, so it's a non issue for the most part. i gave it three stars, not because it's crap, but because it would have to be made here in america and use better steel than 440a to get 4 or 5 stars. i reserve those for better materials and made here where they all should be made, imho. if your hunting for a cheap assist opener that looks tactical and scary this one is good.

This is a spring assisted version of the similar auto model. The handle shape is great for a fighter. But the pocket clip that you can't clip to a pocket?! Come on!

Ok first the pro's:The blade was shaving sharp out of the box and the serrations are very well made. The grip, finger choil, and jimping all feel very secure in the hand. Also the glass breaker feels like it could break lot more than glass. The reason I give it a 2/5 because it out of the box it opens slower than my year old kershaw, and sometimes not all the way. When I close it it sounds like a chinese wind up toy which tells me it won't last. Out of the box there is an unacceptable amount of blade play, and I can't tighten the screws and still open it. Had it been made in the US I am sure it would have been a 4 or a 5.

Much like the last Gerber multi tool I bought, this knife lasted less than a year of regular use. I would use it sometimes daily for anything from stripping wire to slicing vinyl. The blade does not hold an edge, the tip broke off exposing what appears to be low grade potted metal, then bent about a half inch from the tip cutting through a piece of plastic. On three occasions the blade deployed in my pocket, fortunetely I did not cut myself but on the third time the knife was broken and will no longer stay shut , and the spring assist no longer works. Headed back to Gerber.

Not worth the money
I bought this knife a few years ago and was very disappointed with it. When I got the knife, it wasn't very sharp and the serrations were horrible. The blade itself does not hold an edge well. The lock mechanism takes a while to work in and the assisted opening is extremely slow. I would recommend looking somewhere else when looking for an assisted opening knife, such as the Kershaw Blur.
