Best hunting knife ever.

The absolute best knife design I've ever used, initially I was a little put off by its odd appearance but after some use I came to appreciate every odd curve and angle on this knife. They were all incorporated into this design for a reason, turning game into meat, and its hard to describe how well suited this knife is for that task to anyone who hasn't used one. It is impossible to grasp the handle in a manner which feels uncomfortable, the blade has a nice sharp point for making the initial cuts and for delicate skinning jobs, the curved spine keeps that point out of the guts and meat, the steel is good enough that I can quarter a moose or large elk without needing to re-sharpen until the job is done... cant beat it.

none better in the field

It is the most ergonomic knife I've ever owned! I've hunted jack rabbits, prairie chickens, quail, pheasants and coyotes for decades on the plains and this is my go to knife from harvesting meat to just taking the ears to meet federal requirements to taking complete hides. Yes, I have to sharpen it now and then but it's easily done with a good whetstone compared to other top brands that require a grinder or belt sander to get that razor edge. Best of all they are still made in Nova Scotia and didn't sell out to child labor China like so many other big name brands! I only wish it originally came with the #3A - "Army sheath" button overlap. for complete protection.

The Classic Canadian Knife

I have owned the model #1S for almost 20 years and I primarily use it for deer hunting. I also had the earlier carbon version that I got from Herters in the 70's but that one is long gone. The most striking thing about this knife is the design. It is very practical and functional. When dressing out a deer, you can always hold one way or another to get the perfect cut. When you see a hunter with one in a deer camp, you know the hunter is not a rookie. I am not sure of the type of steel that is used but mine came new without a razor edge. The old ones were really a hard, my guess is RC60 or so. Once you put a good edge on them, they hold up well and only require a steel to maintain the edge. The unique shape is what stands out among hunters and designates it as the most famous Canadian design in my humble opinion.

Grohman #1 Canadian Belt Knife

Have used on Deer, Moose and Trout; excellent shape and edge retention. Both the Carbon steel and stainless sharpen perfectly. Carries easily on a belt thanks to the well designed and quality leather sheath. Unlike other, new companies, there are no gimmicks, cheap additions or plastic or nylon sheaths. Grohman is a solid knife for an outdoorsman or woman. I purchased my first Grohman in 1979, I have both flat grind and the standard, all are well worth the price.

Eye candy for those who love knives!

I wasn't sure if I should give this knife a rating of 3 or 4. Because I haven't owned it that long, I gave it the benefit of the doubt and gave it a 4. This is a BEAUTIFUL knife that feels wonderful in the hand. Just holding it in your hand is a sensual pleasure! The reason I gave it a 4 rating is because it came from the factory with a very uneven and not particularly sharp edge. It gave me the impression that the makers sell this knife for people to look at, and not use. It took a lot of work on a coarse stone, and even a file to properly shape the edge, then progressively finer stones to give it an edge a person can use. I haven't used the knife a lot yet, so I don't know how well it will keep its edge. I have the impression, however, that though this isn't bad steel, it isn't the steel quality a person would get in a Benchmade or Spyderco knife. The sheath is very high quality leather. It is a deep pouch that holds the knife snugly without a retaining strap. You aren't going to lose you knife while carrying it in this sheath! I'm very much looking forward to using this knife more. It feels so good in the hand, using it is simply a pleasure. I think it will be absolutely wonderful for dressing deer and other big game, yet it isn't too big to use on small game either. I made a few feather sticks with the knife, just to see how well it worked. I was having so much fun my wife had to yell at me to knock it off and come in for supper.

Nice!

This is a quality knife: nice handle design, made for a easy "push down" motion, good looking scales, good quality sheath. The only con I had was the blade was not sharp from the factory. As as a matter of fact, I can't think of a knife I purchased new that was as dull. Admittedly, though, putting a good sharp edge on the blade was easy and the edge has held up well. Overall, this a nice fixed blade knife, easy on the eye and easy in the hand.
