excellent bushcraft fire knife
This knife is great at a general fire making chores. feathersticks, kindling making, firesteel striking, making nest materials, batoning and can even be used with flint to spark a fire. It is one of the best fire knives on the market. It does a myriad of other chores as well. Viking is a well suited name for this knife and it's handle is very naturally ergonomic. The sheath can be tucked under belt or lashed ranger style or upright lashed in a belt loop. I really love this knife and have made it a permanent EDC item. Triple laminated carbon 1095 steel is perfectly tempered and easily maintained by stropping or use of a fine or medium grit stone. It maintains an excellent and durable edge and is easy to sharpen due to the true scandi bevel edge. I highly recommend this knife. To add cord or rope cutting ability use a medium to coarse stone when sharpening. It must be oiled to keep rust from forming. I use olive oil, which is perfect when I use it to process meat or food. Again, for me it is a must carry item, it will even open cans.

Good fit
Always use carbon steel as it's easier to keep sharp for general use knife, at least for me. Have yet to really try it out as garden season is only now approaching. Feels good to my hand, like the balance!

Excellent historical knife w/ everyday uses
Please bear in mind this review was written by a history nerd who likes historic knives. - Helle's Viking is based on original knives found in Viking graves in Norway. The knife does reflect that 800 c.e. to 1000 c.e. aesthetic of a common man's knife. - There's no metal bolster or guard, just a blade thrust through curly birch, and peened over another piece of steel. - The handle is an oval shape that aids in gripping. Another reviewer was upset because he though the handle was circular in profile, but that would make indexing the knife without looking nearly impossible. - With bushcraft becoming more and more dogmatic, one starts to see movement away from simple proven knives of indigenous or historical provenance. But the Helle Viking is a successful, proven knife carried by people who didn't practice bushcraft, but lived it.

Helle #96 (Viking) and #52 (Fjellmann) blades
Awhile back I bought 2 Helle blades with the idea of putting handles on them. Both are very nicely made (i.e. perfect as far as I could tell) and also the *sharpest* I've ever bought. The "Viking" blade profile is really timeless: 4.25" long, around .15" thick and .90" wide, with a modest drop-point. You really can't do any better for an all-purpose belt knife.

I opened the box with great anticipation, as the photos made the Viking look simple, sleek, and Viking-like. The blade has a beautiful shape, and the two-tone gives it a nice old style look. The birch of the handle is colored perfectly, giving the wood a pleasing warmth. My lower rating is due to the shape of the handle. All text says “Round Handle”, which it is not. In cross-section the handle is teardrop shaped, with the bottom being quite narrow. Not comfortable in the hand, especially when gripping tightly.

Mora is better by far!
This is an awful product. I have had it for a few years of hit and miss use. Camping with fire making and shelter building mainly. From day one it hurt my hand with the sharp V shape of the handle where you wrap your fingers around it? What in the heck is that all about? There’s no bolsters or pommels ect. At this price range, people expect more. Comfort, at the very least. The sheath is so seriously cheap and thin, it’s insane at this price point! The blade is not bad, but I’ve never been a fan of laminated blades. 1095 is cheap and tough, holds a great edge,so if I am after a lower to mid price blade, that’s a great go to. A Mora is every bit as good, if not better, at a fraction of the cost.
