German quality

I will be buying another. Top quality German made to perfection. It will survive a nuclear war. Very utilitarian, but hey it is a tool, right? If you want something to look at, get something else, but I you need a real man's knife, you found it. Quit reading this an buy one for yourself. You will not regret it.

Glad to have it

As far as I can tell, every part of the knife: rivets, locking mechanism, lanyard loop etc. are stainless. Should last pretty much forever. Very slim in the pocket, blade lockup is very solid with no looseness. Blade shape is surprisingly useful. Aesthetics are great. Otter stamp is cool and nice brushed finish. OK it’s a $35 knife. Mine came in a plastic sleeve all dirty and covered with machine oil. Edge was rough. But cleaned up easily and I always put a new edge (or at least refine the existing edges) on a knife anyway. The steel is “Solingen” which is undoubtedly some variant of German 0.5 carbon stainless, but the heat treat is pretty good. You won’t be disappointed with the edge holding, unless you are expecting something like S 30V. All and all a very cool knife. One possible downside is that the lock spring is pretty stiff. If you have small hands you might have trouble with it.

Great quality and workmanship.

I purchased 3 Black Cat Mercator knives about 5 years ago, one to use and 2 to keep. The one I used took a lot of time getting the blade to open smoother and had to carefully file the burs off the rivets without scratching black finish, then had a professional sharpening job, since blade had almost no edge. I don't believe these were made by Otter. I was attracted to the stainless handle Otter because I once had a polished Mercator with fine lines on the handle but I gave it away and never saw one again. I received my Stainless handle Otter yesterday and I was very impressed in the quality and finish. The blade was sharp, The rivets were smooth without burs and the blade opened without any filing or polishing. I just ordered 2 more Otters to keep.

The Silver Otter- A Great EDC Version of the Mercator Black Cat

I have carried a Mercator Black Cat on and off since I was a kid in the 1980's. My dad carried one since the 1950's (he has been gone nearly twenty years, but the knife still functions perfectly). A slim, light weight, strong design made for hard use, many were used during both world wars. The only down side has been that the black paint starts to wear pretty quick. Finally, they are being made in an all stainless version! A real joy to carry and use, the stainless blade is easy to hone razor sharp, with a secure positive lock.

Excellent quality

Just like these knives carry it as a second knife sometimes.

Very sturdy, no nonsense hard use knife

The knife arrived so quickly. Great shipping service ! The knife was perfect , no issues with quality, fit, or finish. But, the knife was much larger than I expected. This is not a small or light knife. You definitely know when it's in your pocket. This will be a work knife. I may order the smaller, non locking blade for casual carry.
