I need another camp knife/combat/chopper, like I need a third butt cheek. But, I just had to have this KaBar, Gunny Fixed in remembrance of a great American, R. Lee Ermey, affectionately known to us as, “Gunny.” Some may question whether Gunny was a fine actor, or just played himself in the roles he played. But, check out his performance as the sleazy preacher, Jimmy Lee Farnsworth in, Fletch Lives. Definitely not who he was as a person; yet he is very believable in that role (He was snubbed by the Oscar’s Memoriam this year; Shame on you, Hollywood!). But, Gunny endeared himself to us in his role as U. S. Marine Drill Instructor, Gunnery Sgt. Hartman, in the movie, Full Metal Jacket, carrying out a role he lived and owned. Gunny was the quintessential bad-a**, hard charging, alpha male we all looked up to, from a bygone era in America before men were neutered by political correctness. Hard to the core. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Appropriate for a U.S. Marine, Gunny Fixed has the weight and feel of a short boarding cutlass; an, ‘enlisted man’s boarding cutlass,’ if you will? Arrived machete sharp, with a 25 degree edge on the flat saber ground blade. Swedge is unsharpened. Has good balance with fulcrum about 1” in front of guard. Feels light weight in hand for such a large knife. Handle is comfortable, and rocks forward in a chopping stroke to deliver a power snap. No hot spots noted with use. Handle scales are handsome, but not grippy. Fine fit ‘n’ finish. Sheath is adequate, but definitely not a quick release sheath. This knife seems almost too nice to use. But, Gunny was never a man of pretense, aesthetics, facades, or false bravado. He was a man of function and action.
