Comfortable and tough

When the KA-BAR Becker folder was first shown off I was really excited. I wish KA-BAR would make high quality folders in general, but usually they aren't the best. This being said what instantly turned me off was their steel choice of AUS-8A. It seems KA-BAR is locked in with putting cheap steel into their folding knives. However, when I saw this advertised my curiosity hit its peak and I just ordered it. Reviews saying the knife handle is comfortable are NOT exaggerating, I was very impressed with how it felt. I am also a huge sucker for anything that is D2 steel (personal favourite for a lot of situations) so this exclusive was an obvious choice for me. I used it today at my job and purposefully went out of my way to cut down as much cardboard as possible and it just worked fantastically. It MAY be a little chunky for some people and maybe a tad too big, but this was an obvious add to my collection.

Fits great in the hand, the blade deploys perfectly - Always been a fan of D2 - so this was tough to say no to.

Great knife a a great price.

I wanted to buy this knife when it first came out with AUS-8a steel. I held off hoping it would get a little love in the steel department. D2 Was the least of the steels I wanted this knife in. The Knife itself is just as good in the hand as a becker should be, the D2 steel is still fairly easy to sharpen but has the edge retention to be a great edc or light duty woods knife. This is a definite great contender for a budget edc. I absolutely love mine so far.

Excellent Knife

I bought this knife for camping. I wanted a knife that was as close to a fixed blade as possible but still be a folder. I think this knife with D2 steel is perfect. It's strength and durability is very clear. My only complaint is the "sticky" action. When deploying the knife there is a kind of drag to it. Not sure if that will let up or not over time. Overall a very good knife made with strong D2 steel and ready to do serious work in the woods.

Amazing knife that demands aggression

I have been carrying this knife as my daily EDC for two weeks straight. I have been wrestling with cardboards to try to get the blade to dull, and oh did it fight me on that. Surprisingly this felt that it had the same edge retention as an S30V, and took me twice longer to sharpen. The website says its around 58 HRC but based on the edge retention and the stubbornness when sharpening on the whetstone it felt more like a 62-63 HRC blade. It usually takes me 250 strokes per side on a 1000 grit stone to sharpen an S30V and around 80-120 strokes for D2, but this specific knife took me around 420 strokes per side to get any type of burr. The frame (liner) of the knife feels very sturdy, but it also demands that you aggressively open the knife for it to lock optimally, otherwise the liner lock wouldn't fully actuate underneath the blade. I noticed another reviewer complaining about it but I personally didn't care once I got used to it. I just wish it was softer because the edge retention is too high for me. I typically enjoy and look forward to sharpening but this knife will make that an infrequent occurrence. I also wish it had a lockback instead, as that would better compliment the durable nature of this knife.

Great Work Knife, with a few caveats

For starters, this knife is a beast, very ergonomic, the smooth contoured handles feel awesome in hand, blade is beautiful. My detractors for this knife are minimal, but noteworthy. First, it's got solid, non-skeletonized liners. I'd say that's both a pro and a con. It's great for adding to the beefiness and rigidity of this awesome working knife, but also adds noticeable weight if you're looking to EDC this puppy. The grind on the blade was not awesome, but for the price of the knife, it's something that I can deal with. The wire clip works well for deep carry, but is a weak point on a knife that seems born to work and be abused. On the upside, a Spyderco wire clip fits this guy, so likely down the road, I'll replace it with a LynchNW Ti clip. The action is a bit stiff, but is very smooth. I was able to deploy without too much effort, or a wrist flick. Some extra break in and maybe polishing of the washers and it will be smother/easier to deploy. I disassembled, cleaned and lubed mine in hopes of helping improve action. It didn't really improve, but it was worthwhile as after almost a week, it had already gotten kinda grimy. The pivot screw is not captive, requires two T8s, and they are TIGHT! Same with some of the T6 body screws. Be aware, and careful if you decide to disassemble. Also, I thought it was interesting that there were 3 washers inside, instead of 2 or 4. The second washer goes on the clip side of the knife. Overall, this knife is a beast and one I look forward to using and abusing! I expect that it this knife will serve me well for a long time.

Big Beefy Folder

This is my second Ka-Bar and first Becker knife. I was attracted to the black handled version of this knife when it first came out last year but people complained about the cheap steel and didn't reconsider this knife until they came out with this Knifecenter exclusive with the D2 steel. Unlike David's fast flick opening on his video, I was not able to accomplish this fast flick opening. Thankfully I have a torx screwdriver set and slightly adjusted the main blade screw and the knife now opens and closes a lot better although with not not that that fast act flick on the thumb screw. When I slightly adjusted the torx screw, it also slightly threw off the centering of the knife. This is an affordable working knife that I won't be worried about carrying, although it still costs $50, I love the thick, beefy brutish look of this knife, and this would have been something I'd carry on an US Army training exercise if I was still in the military. I also appreciated how the gray handles fit nicely in my medium sized female hands and how scales are not slippery and don't feel like cheap shiny plastic. I like the gimping and the wire clip too. Although this is not a light weight knife, it doesn't weigh a ton either, unlike many Becker knives. All in all this is a good but not great knife but a great working folder.

Questionable Action

I really like this knife despite two major issues: the action and the lock. With a regular thumbstud flick, the blade consistently open about 3/4 as seen in the video when it “misfires” on DCA. From there, when I walk it out the rest of the way it has a sturdy click at about 90% the way there, but it’s not open all the way or locked. Then it fully clicks a second time when locked into place. It’s kinda like a Colt. Then the liner lock is really stiff which is good for lockup, but it’s thin and the jimping wears on your thumb after awhile. I learned this b/c I was unhappy with the action and figured it just needed breaking in so I spent two days fidgeting all day while at my computer. It got smoother, but the “two-stage” open never changed and that’s when my thumb started hurting from closing it over and over. So why do I like it? With a heavier wrist flick it will open all the way with one motion. It’s a heavy blade so that makes some sense. The handle/grip is great and I’m confident in the lock so it’ll make a good hard use camp chore knife. Just wish is was a smoother action with a wider lock bar.

Nothing special. Blade steel is good. Handle is ok just plastic and smooth. The action is probably the worst I've had in a long time. If you are looking for just a plain knife with no frills than this knife is for you.

Loose blade

I bought this knife with high expectations and am pretty disappointed. I love the look of this BK40, the fact that it has a D2 steel blade and a great feel in the hand. The problem is that the blade is loose and cannot be tightened so it doesn’t wobble. Brand new knife and the blade is loose.
