Worth $15 for the extra functionality of the side pockets
It's kind of silly that Leatherman doesn't just make this the default sheath that comes with their multitools. But if you are hesitating about having to spend $15 extra when your expensive Leatherman came with a sheath, I understand. I was too. But those little side pockets will allow you to up your EDC significantly while keeping your pockets free. These are my favorite style sheaths by Leatherman, and the pockets add enough extra functionality that for me they are definitely worth the extra $15, but it would have been nice if Leatherman just sent these out with the multitools. I got this for my P4 or Signal, but it's really large and the Signal just about disappeared down inside it. So I tried my SAK Rangergrip 79 and it just fits lengthwise. So, perfect for me because I was wanting a sheath for it and couldn't find one. I'm putting together another order now where I'll get a couple of the same sheath in Medium for my P4, Signal. When they arrive I'll try my Sidekicks in them to see how they fit. If they made this is a small for the Sidekick and similar size Leathermans I would buy them. I'm coming at this from a wilderness survival/bushcraft perspective. I've been able to fit a 1/2" x 6" ferro rod in one of those side sleeve pockets, although depending on the size of sheath you get a 5" or 4" might be a better fit. Because the pockets are elastic I'm pretty sure it will fit the 3/8th diameter and be snug, but you can always add a lanyard long enough to wrap over and under your ferro rod to secure it. If you're following the Pathfinder School technique of wrapping 1" width Gorilla tape around the top of the ferro rod just below the lanyard hole there is no way the ferro rod is going to drop out. The 1/2" fits so snugly I can turn the sheath upside down and shake all I want, it's not budging. On the other side you could fit a ceramic sharpening rod in similar fashion. Here at the KnifeCenter you can find just the rods without a handle, and you could wrap the Gorilla tape around one end in a similar fashion to form a 'handle' and guard so you don't accidentally take the blade down so far that you cut yourself. It would also be possible to fit penlights, pens etc as long as they are 1/2" or less in diameter. So imagine, all in one unit you can carry your Leatherman and have an ultra-sharp knife, saw, pliers, wire cutters and whatever other tools your Leatherman has, plus a ferro rod that will last for years if not your lifetime, a ceramic rod for sharpening and honing in the field, or other useful tools like a pen or flashlight.
