Keep it centered and use a light stroke!
I think that people giving this sharpener a poor review are just trying too hard. Literally too hard! I can easily see how someone pressing too hard will not get a sharp edge and likely will dull their knife further. I received this product today and tried it on a second hand "tactical" japanese sword that I bought used and quite dull I applied 20 or 30 light strokes on about half the blade in each direction. I used a very light pressure, not much more than necessary to keep the tool in contact with the edge of the sword. That was enough to make it quite a bit sharper, and I'm sure that when I have time after the holidays to work on it I'll be able to get this sword as sharp as I want with this tool. Anyone who has had a bad experience with it, give it another try and if you see the difference give it a new rating. -Jerry
