Great heavy duty full sized knife

This is a great chopper & slasher. This is the big brother to my Rat 3. When it comes to battoning or more heavy duty work, this is my knife. The large broad blade is great for scraping and allows for a safe top grip of the blade for control. The choil gives more control to the knife for fine work. The handle feels great (micarta), I don't mind it's a bit blocky, it fills my hand perfectly. The tip doesn't thin down like the Rat 3. It's full thickness almost all the way to the point. They machined down the very tip for better piercing. The heavy point makes for good drilling. The sheath is ok, plastic liner rattles a bit but it's got tie downs & secures nicely. This is a big tough knife. Handles well. Takes a beating and keeps going. Well worth it.

RAT-7

The RAT-7 is not as refined as an ESEE or TOPS but it’s arguably a better value. 1075 is good stuff for a “field/woods” knife. Contrary to popular opinion there’s not a significant difference between 1075 and 1095. 1075 is slightly tougher while 1095 has slightly better edge retention. Pick which one is more important to you and start using your knife. The sheath is a basic sheath but it works. This is a great value for a US made knife.

They're 1075 steel now...

Ontario changed the blade steel to 1075 some time around 2016. The only knives made of 1095 are military contract knives. If you type in the SKU 8668 on the Ontari Knife Company website and pull up the specs, you will see it's made of 1075. The knife I have is well made, and arrived quite sharp. The micarta scales are quite blocky, but not uncomfortable. But I have large hands. The coating seems a little cheap, but I plan on stripping it off anyway. The sheath is functional, but unimpressive. The knife itself is solid, tough, and very well balanced. The handles and sheath can be replaced, but with the cost involved, one could purchase a similar knife by the same designers for less than what you would ultimately pay for the this knife. Used as it comes, it's a good value. Otherwise, you could pay a little more and have a better knife.
