Great EDC knife

With a medium hand the Rat 2 is a great EDC knife. Looking for a anssited opening just like the Rat 1, that would be sweet.

Rat Infestation...

OK, I'll join the review line as number 10. I am a collector. In hand, not in the field. Already own Rats 1 & 2 with black nylon handles and Satin D2 blades. I blame Shabazz for the first two. So why a second Rat 2 and Rat 1? Easy, read reviews one through nine. Not that I don't have knives as good as Rats 1&2 close to the price. I do. But, I happened to bump into this Rat 2 version at another vendor in Black Blade and Black Carbon Fibre G-10 handles. (Ontario listens, and I enjoy collecting this knife). I like this combination for a knife and the Rats look so good. I noticed I object to the large graphic on the exhibition-side of blade with the non-exhibition side clean and pristine. Except, I got used to Ontario's Blade graphic. So, never mind. I realize this is meaningless comment for a review. I bought both along with a Civivi Elementum. Ontario just manages to produce a dependable and wonderfully simple designed EDC with desirable features with perfect operations and is fabricated so reliably and is just fun to collect. Do I need four Ontario Rats? Of course. I have limited edition EDCs that Ontario approaches in the essence of what makes a knife worthy to purchase/use/collect/whatever. KCI saw to it that my UPS shipment reached me in their usual jet pack speed. And the promotion item however it fits is always appreciated. And, what to do about a Rat infestation? I recommend enjoy them

FANTASTIC EDC

So...I have this knife with OD Green Nylon handles. Normally, I would never give a liner lock a five, but... I have a modest collection--including a Sabenza. I have a pretty standard Delica. And I have an Osborne in D2 (limited edition, from about 10 years ago). I picked up the Rat2 in D2 to see what the Rat fuss was about. O M G IMHO, what I like in an EDC... light (check), under 3" blade (check), sharp-good cutter (check), good action (check), good lockup (hmm check minus), decent steel (check), no speed assist (check) What a fantastic knife--liner lock or not... I had a little trouble at first with the detent, but it did work out over time. Yes the Delica has a better lock, but for EDC use, the Ontario liner is JUST FINE. The washers in this thing make it a super smooth pivot/opener that you can easily flick open (with a little break in). The handle is super comfortable, and it comes with 2 stainless liners that provide plenty of stability that the nylon might have lacked--to the point where I'd say the G10 isn't really necessary (still nice especially with the carbon fiber, but not NECESSARY as the standard Rat2's handle is plenty strong). As for D2. It's fine (no pun intended). Like I said above, I have other D2 knives, and I will say that D2 if not maintained will corrode/rust, even if just sitting in a drawer. I've had to work out a few spots from my other D2 knives. So what can we do about it? Hmmm...how about a coating to help resist that corrosion...BRILLIANT! Now, yes the coating will wear over time and is ugly when it does. But as your EDC, it's not your household beater. My edcs don't get a lot of heavy use. For most heavier-use tasks around the house, I'll pick up a bigger knife. But it's always there, inside or out, every day. Even with basic cleaning from say, a tuff cloth, corrosion should not be an issue anyway, but the coating provides a little more protection. So yeah it is a liner lock. Liner locks have had some documented spectacular failures, but all liner locks are not created equal, and I can say with confidence that Ontario, ZT, and Spyderco give good liner lock. The likelihood of failure for edc use is low. And the more I use this knife, the more I like it. So yeah my $30+ Rat2 has overtaken my slick little $80 delica as my edc. The real reason for the 5 though is the price. Even at this price point around $50, what you get for your money is spectacular. The fuss is justified. The Rats 1 and 2 are great, well-designed knives worth every penny and in many ways superior to more expensive knives. IMHO, these are THE BEST budge folders--even against those companies trying to copy them with slight improvements. The F/F and overall experience is just...wow. Come winter, I'll keep the delica in one jacket and my Rat2 in another.

Best EDC

Best edc and it looks pimp with carbon fiber. I use this exact knife and it's larger brother the Rat 1 with serrated blade also for edc. Best mid size D2 blade for the price is the Rat 2 no doubt about it.

Very Good Knife

I'm a everyday all day EDC guy, letters, boxes twine paracord, etc. This knife was sharp out of the box, properly adjusted and blade centered, very smooth operation. I found the carbon fiber really nice, edges rounded with a very good 3D appearance. It is smooth but not necessarily slippery. I'm not an in the muck kinda guy with a knife so I can't comment on wet muddy use. For me I like how it feels. For the money, awesome knife.

Couldn't resist the beauty of this knife. The carbon fiber handles are a sexy addition. I don't typically care for small blades but made an exception for this as I love the Rat 1 model. Highly recommend.

This blade gets the job done.

I use this knife everyday from cutting paracord to cutting my lunch. The D2 steel can cut through anything, I think. It's not showing any nicking or dulling from everyday use. The jimping on the top of the blade provides excellent control of the blace. I like the length of the blade too. Since I am not a large person, I try to keep the maximum length to within 3 inches. Because of that, it fits very good in my hands. The ergonomic handle design cradles my forefinger well without compromising the placement of the liner lock. It is neither too recessed, nor pronounced, and opening and closing the blade is very smooth and efficient. The CF handles are a little too smooth though. I'm not saying that the knife may accidentally slip between your fingers during use, but maybe choosing the G10 scales will provide extra security for others. But having CF handles makes it easy to clip it in my trouser pockets without fear of the cloth being frayed in time by rough scales. Overall, I am pleased with this purchase. It gives the most bang for my buck.

Bad Carbon Fiber

This is the best knife, for the money, out there. The problem is the cheap “sticker” of carbon fiber they put on the handle. It is so slippery I had to put gun handle tape on it! It doesn’t ruin this excellent knife, especially in its D2 counterpart, but it does take away. Get the other handle material.
