only 2 things can think of to improve it 1. is smoother top side of the blade (done it with spyderco sharp maker) 2. milled liners to lighten it up. very smooth to open & close most comfortable knife in hand for multiple opening & closing in my collection. SUPER FEEL IN HAND NO ROUGH SPOTS. near perfection at INCREDIBLE value for the money and then some! final thoughts BUY IT!

Now that's a knife!
First impression was the overall quality of the knife. Already own CRKT, BUCK, and KERSHAW knives. ONTARIO easily matches them. (or perhaps they match ONTARIO quality) Little heavier than some EDC knives but those few extra ounces give you a rugged and hard working tool. Good blade steel (AUS-8), nice finish, very sharp, easy to open with a flick of the thumb, has a good feel and fits the hand vey well, locks up tight, and easy to breakdown for cleaning. That's a lot of knife at a very reasonable price. Actually bought a second one to put in the tsunami bugout bag.

This knife is great I bought it a month ago and it still cuts paper with the factory edge! I've been using it moderate to heavy so I was suprised. Definetly worth the money for the knife you are getting. If you want a decent medium sized folding EDC knife this will surly do the job. I'm going to pick up 2 More as gifts. Also the pocket clip is great it can be moved to 1 of 4 locations and I moved mine to the bottom left as it offers another place to put your index finger when griping.

Great Low Cost Folding Survival Knife
This is a fabulous knife for under $30. The flat grind blade is easy to sharpen. The four way clip and ambidextrous thumb studs are excellent features usually found on a more expensive knife. I know some prefer a US made knife, but being made in Taiwan, it's kept to a reasonable cost. At $30, you can keep a few of these knives in different bags ready to go. You can also use it hard, because it didn't cost too much to be a real tool.

This is by far my favorite EDC knife, and I'll tell you why... I'v carried the RAT 1 for over a year, and I use it for everything. I don't need to worry about thrashing it or losing it because it didn't cost me a hundred (or MORE!) dollars. And a few weeks ago... I lost mine. I was cutting some rope behind my truck, and mistakenly left my knife on the rear bumper, and drove off. I came back and looked everywhere, but it was gone. I was only heartbroken for a minute, because I got online to knifecenter.com and bought me a new one! This time I got the Desert Tan version. I previously had the Coyote, which I liked alot, and feel I should have got that one again...but its all good. Maybe I'll just pick it up anyway.

I collect knives for fun and just received this knife today. I love it. Can't believe the price is so low for this much quality. Feels great in my hand, opens and closes easily one-handed, sharp out of the box, liner lock centered perfectly, I own or have owned benchmade, spyderco, cold steel, gerber, buck, craftsman, leatherman, victorinox, kershaw, and case pocket knives. The rat model 1 is among my favorites already.

this knife seems to be well made and sharp right from the box.it has good balance and you can get a good grip on it.the things i find that could be improved are the ease of opening and to produce it in the u.s.a. like a lot of other ontario knives are.over all i think it is a good knife to have in a pack or bug-out-bag[b.o.b.].

Excellent Folding Bushcraft Knife
The only thing that makes this knife a 4 out of 5 stars is the weight. It's pretty heavy compared to a Benchmade AFO or similar knife, but lighter than a Buck 110. It comes extremely sharp out of the box, can be adjusted to carry tip up in the right or left pocket, and opens well one handed with either hand. The real winner for this knife is the price - I bought one and tried it out and was so satisfied that I bought three more to keep in the drawer for future gifts. The only thing I woud change is to have blaze orange colored handles - orange is easy to find when you drop it and makes the knife less threatening to people who are afraid of knives (which seems to be more and more the case these days).

I wanted a heavy duty work horse of a knife. Wow! Refined Excellence. It has to be the smoothest action I ever experienced. Only the lack of being a flipper and too smooth a handle kept it from being a 5-star. I wish the RAT 2 came in other colors. Lavender would be an instant purchase for my wife. Lighter, bright colors would have me with orange, red, blue or green. Alas, they stuck to their drab colors. Anyway, getting back to the RAT 1, it is simply one of the best knives in the world. The grip is comfortable and there is plenty of room for a full grip. I've been waiting for years to buy this beauty and the time was finally right. A must have for any collection or man serious about doing hard work. Strongly recommended.

I had previously purchased one in OD/black finish. I thought having one with almost opposite colors would be cool. It is. Handle color looks more white in the picture than it actually is though. It really is tan. I'm really going to be critical of the RAT-1 in this review. Overall, it's a good knife for the money and remember, I bought two. NOT an EDC unless you're a hunter/skinner/similar tough use; too big and too heavy for that. I just wish they gave you a thicker blade. If I was digging inside of an elk and was trying to cut and pry off skeleton I'd be careful...it could snap. Maybe that's not this knife's intended purpose? I think Ontario should make one like that(heavier) and then also one sized more for the EDC crowd. That market is getting crowded for sure, but I think a RAT model would fit in. It's a great time to be a knife collector! Usable blade on these is more like 3 1/4". Most importantly: please, please skeletonize the liners Ontario!!! If you're afraid of weakening the pivot area then just don't go so closely there. This knife would be a 10 out of 5 if they did that. I know! More labor intensive = more cost.
