Best bang for your buck. Came centered, no blade play. Beats chinese kershaw's in my opinion. Own ZT's and Spyderco knives. I have no problem carrying this knife at all. Great action, Buying these for folks who carry crappy knives. Nick Shabazz is right about these, Youtuber Came super sharp also. Great work knife!

Best knife for the money period!

It’s hard to find a true bargain these days but this knife is unbelievable for the price. It has a very good fit and finish. It has the best natural fit to my hand out of all my folders. It’s not as handsome as my Osborne 940 but it performs on par or better. It’s very good slicer. All it needed on arrival was a good stropping to bring a razor edge. Yes….the Aus 8 steel will need to be touched up more than your high end steels, but at this price you can’t go wrong. Buy this knife!

A real deal for a REAL knife

I'm a knife guy. Have many brands and many levels of "quality". I have a small construction business doing mainly home remodeling. The knife I carry daily at work gets put thru the ringer each and every day. Cutting shingles, trimming shims, H2O line cuts and PVC prepping, fixing nail guns, strap cutting, shaving down 2x4's edges, and all things under the hood of my vehicles....my daily carry gets its ass kicked all the time. This RAT 1 takes it and smiles, asking when the next round begins. I have carried the Griptillian for a few years (15 actually and it's little brother) and still love that knife system. One day in Academy I saw this RAT on the store shelf and thought it looked like a good daily carry but had my doubts. This thing was $38 and I figured what the hell. Got her home and spent the next few days playing with it. Snapped it open and shut a hundred times while watching tv. For those unfamiliar with this model you have to HOLD it. The dynamic between forefinger and thumb on this knife is like none other. There is an incredible balance and feel. If you silhouette the opened knife the shadow reveals a very sexy shape. Looks like an Italian sports car maker designed it. The curves of the handle blend into the blade in a way I've not seen on ANY other knife, no matter the price...and you can feel that Ferrari look in your hand. Trust me on this. I went back to Academy a few days later and got another with a smaller RAT 2 and another "special edition" RAT 1.The special edition had the D2, combo blade and carbon fiber scales. Those scales are way too slick so I swapped them out with my OD greens. Perfection now. I've been shopping KC for a little while now (civivi. we, spyderco. etc) and purchased two more of these AUS-8's and just got three more coming. At $22 and change there is NO BETTER deal anywhere at any price. It IS a workhorse of a knife. Some bitch about the size or weight....get one and carry it, use it...those issues will never enter your mind. As I mentioned earlier about my griptillian. Yep a good/great knife and a workhorse as well. But you can get 8 RAT 1's for a single griptillian. Will that one Benchmade outlast 8 RAT 1's ?? No way in hell !! I hate that the Ontario RAT 1's and 2's aren't made in the USA but damn....$22 ?? Just try one and work the hell out of it and report back your results. That feel and balance in the hand and the confidence to use it for ANYTHING (forgot to mention I used it to baton stakes and firewood while camping for the past 3 years) will have you wondering about real VALUE in a knife. Honestly I'm afraid to put my high end stuff through all this knife has been through. Of course I only figured out the hard nosed work this one takes by saying, what the hell, if it breaks I'm only out a few bucks. RAT 1 says move aside to every other folding knife you need for a daily carry. $22 is an ASTONISHING deal....and that's from a knife guy!!

What a deal

This is my first RAT 1 and I have to say it appears to be a very nice knife. For the large dementions it doesn't appear to be a big hulking knife and it carries smaller in the pocket. This knife is ergonomically pleasing as well , feeling good in the hand and the thumb stud placement is good. The blade flicks open very nice. I was torn between the 1 and 2 but I am glad I chose the 1. The size and weight is good. I was expecting the foliage green to be a funky shade due to the price reduction but no, it is very nice. Also Knife Center gets a thumbs up for fast delivery. I ordered it Sunday night and received it Wednesday morning.

A terrific knife, especially at this price

I'm not a fan of linerlocks, but I live with it on this knife because it's just TERRIFIC in every other way (and, frankly, it's a fine liner, though the detent is firm enough that the blade CAN tomahawk down on you, so be careful!). I wear XL gloves and this handle fills my hand. I don't like G10 scales because they tend to be too grippy, snagging against the pocket too much: these are rounded and smooth, with just enough texture to stay firmly in the hand. The quasi-choil where the index finger rides is deep and offers excellent protection against riding up the blade during hard use. That 3.6" blade is a perfect size for a knife like this, with clean geometry and a tip-to-hand angle that puts the belly at just the right point for slicing. The open back gives it a clean look and helps you keep it clean, and that liner lock thunks into position with a deep, positive hold, yet isn't a beast to unlock. And I like AUS-8 for a hard-working steel: holds a good enough edge long enough, and freshens up easily. For years, I've purchased Kabar Doziers to hand out to people ("you don't own a knife? you MUST.. here.."). This knife is much better than my beloved Doziers (though I miss the thumb-hole in the blade, my preference over studs) for overall build quality and that longer blade. Gonna buy several of these.

Similar to the Spyderco Tenacious, but better.

Just got mine in the mail today and couldn't be happier. The handle is extremely comfortable. It's at least as comfortable to hold as an Opinel. The blade is AUS 8 steel, a mid grade steel, but hard to beat for 20 dollars. The blade is a very functional shape and came razor sharp and locks up nice and tight. No blade play at all. This knife compares favorably with knives I've bought that cost two or three times as much. It reminds me a lot of the Spyderco Tenacious, except it's more comfortable to hold, less intrusive to carry in the pocket, and is about half the price.

For $23, you can't beat it

A classic knife and for a good reason. Ergos are incredible, even as larger knife for someone with smaller hands such as me. Just melts into the hand. Feels rock-solid and ready to put in the work. Opens with a very satisfying "thwock!" Everyone should have a RAT in their collection!

A Classic Value

Until I started watching knife reviews on YouTube I knew nothing about the Ontario Rats. This version at the price I paid is just an incredible value. I understand why it's been an iconic knife for so long. After playing with it a few days the action loosened up and it's now just a joy to flip open. I really like the feel in hand, the sharpness out of the box, and that it's from an American company made in Taiwan not China. I even like the green which to me looks more like a light OD green. I'll be back one day for the D2 version.

This is a well built knife. For the price I don't think a better knife can be found under $30. Knife feels comfortable in my hand. This knife is just so much better than the tiny rat II. Would never buy a Rat II when this is available for half the price. Liner lock is a little difficult to disengage. Would highly recommend

Excellent Large Folder

I ordered this knife to handle chores around camp that might be asking a bit much of a Swiss Army Knife. I couldn't be more pleased. The blade is well-shaped for utility use and came as sharp as I'd want it to be. My experience with AUS-8 has been good, so I expect no trouble there. Neither the pivot point or the lock on the RAT 1 exhibit any slop whatsoever. The ergonomics are excellent, and the placement of the thumb stud is such that the knife almost seems to open itself. While "Foliage Green" wouldn't have been my first color choice for the handle slabs, I'll live with it for $22.95 and may order another before they're gone. I would offer one caution: This isn't a small knife, and it may not lend itself to comfortable pocket carry in lightweight slacks or shorts. If you're looking for an outdoor knife, go for it; if you're looking for an all-around EDC, you might consider the slightly smaller RAT 2. As usual, my KnifeCenter order got here before I actually expected it, and there were no problems with the order.

The Rat 1 gets 5 stars because of the value of this knife. Its the perfect size and heft for me, super sharp and opens with a snap. I got this on sale for $22 which is just crazy. I feel like I should get a few more for friends and to put them all around the house to have them readily accessible. You can’t go wrong buying this knife.

Just got mine in the mail today. This is my second Rat1. I bought the tan D2 steel model awile back and couldn't pass this deal up when I saw it. You can't go wrong at $22.95. These are big, strong, well made knives. Deployment is smooth and crisp. Lock up is solid with no blade play. Blade design is really clean and simple, yet elegant and rugged. A nice design for gutting and skinning big game. Razor sharp out of the box. These Rat1's are a winner.

I can't sing the RATS praises enough. It's by far the best knife in this price range I've purchased. I prefer it to just about every other knife in my collection, and some of my other knives were more than ten times as much. It came sharp as a razor out of the box, locks tightly, is comfortable in the hand, opens easily, no blade play at all, is comfortable in the pocket and it doesn't draw attention to itself. Just perfect. I wish I bought mine ten years ago. At this sale price I may just buy a few more to hold on to in case they retire the model.

I, like a millions other folks, carried a RAT 1 folder for years. These are just solid, well designed, fine functioning work horses (D2 version probably even better). Great knife for the bug-out bag, truck, camping, canoeing, hiking, hunting, and everyday utility. They’ll handle whatever comes down the pike.

RAT Model1 with AUS8 blade

I have owned the version with D2 steel blade for several years and have been very happy with how it’s made and handles. I have owned other knives with AUS8 blades and have found it to be a good mid range steel. When I saw the version with AUS8 blade steel on sale for $22.95 I considered it to be an excellent price and ordered 5 which came in today (2-20-21). Quality of the knives was excellent, highly recommend them in AUS8 or D2.

Excellent EDC knife

This is an excellent knife. I use it for everyday carry, although most people will probably find it a little large for that. Mine was razor sharp right out of the box, and has stayed sharp after 2 weeks of moderate use cutting open hay bales and breaking down boxes mostly. It only takes a few tries to master one-handed opening, and once you do, it opens with authority. I like the nylon handle scales. They feel great, and offer enough grip. The knife is very sturdy without being heavy. The blade geometry is about perfect as well. I like that the user can change the position of the pocket clip, and can disassemble and maintain the knife. There is a lot of potential for project work with this knife. If I could change one thing about it, I would make it just a bit smaller, but not as small as the RAT 2.

These at this price range are the best value on the net I m o. Paid less than 75 bucks for 3. 1 in my pocket 1 in the vehicle n 1 staying in the box in my bugout bag. Come sharp as hell. Almost any knife I've ever bought even at much higher price point need something. Not these! Just an outstanding quality for the money. I mite buy a couple more as gifts before they go off sale. Only negative is they r slightly heavier mayb than u want in each. But if u can use ur hands the liners can b taken out n dremmell it out in the center to loose a few ounces n still retain strength!

Great knife

I just recently received the Rat1 and I’ve been using it for opening boxes, cutting cord, etc. I really like the feel of the knife. It feels solid, well built. It opens easily and closes just as easily. The blade was sharp out of the box and so far has retained its edge. Really good knife for the price.

I pretty much forvthe money! Great price and quick shipping! Can't find anything wrong with this knife! I own a few spydercos! Many civvi! And toothless many others. And this Ontario Rat is becoming a favorite edc. I would even think twice about buy it again. Fairly sharp out of the box but, I made that hair stripping sharp quick. Great knife for heavy duty cutting

I bought this Ontario RAT 1 from Knife Center a few weeks ago as I was looking for a strong folder for a wood trimming project. I made a good choice. This is my first Ontario knife and after using several other folders and fixed blade knives in the past I am very pleased with this RATs performance. The ergonomics are very good. Great grip and balance. When cutting and shaving wood the knife feels like a full tang fixed blade knife. When open the blade is locked in solid. No play or wiggle. The blade snaps open with a sharp snap with an easy flip of the stud. The blade is sharp and has held its edge very well after all cutting. This is a great knlfe at this price point for knife users. A previous review go it right. This RAT is a workhorse.

What a Steel! See what I did there :)

Love this knife and at this price it is a complete no Brainer , I’ve carried it for about a year now and used it on boxes , paper , rope, meat , plastic ties , tape etc.... and it holds a useable edge for awhile and is crazy easy to sharpen . This knife is a steel! :) see what I did there . I’m sure the D2 version is better but I would buy two of these at this price instead .

A lot of knife for the money!

I'm not sure what this will cost when you see this review but when I purchased mine it was on sale here for $22.95! That's an astonishing price for this much knife. The lockup is rock solid, the scales are very nice and the grind nicely centered. My sample is among the sharpest folders I've ever found out of the box, truly impressive! Generally in my experience Spydero is about the only brand that sells knives that are reliably sharp enough OOTB that I don't have to touch them up before using but this certainly passes muster. AUS8 is not a 'super steel' by any stretch of the imagination but it's pretty rust resistant and a good choice in this price range. It's new so I can't speak to edge retention but I imagine it will be pretty pedestrian in that regard. Not a huge issue though as AUS8 is pretty easy to sharpen. At the price there's no much to complain about. The lockup is extremely solid and the blade shape is great. The scales are comfortable in the hand and the whole package feels solid. I'd like to have the D2 version but for this price I'll live with the steel. Really the only minor complaint is that it's a tad heavy but certainly not terrible for a knife this size.

Looks great, feels great, is great!

Just got this today and it is one sweet knife! Very sharp out of the box and appears to be very solidly built. Opens and closes very smoothly with minimal effort. Used it earlier to cut up some cardboard boxes and it was no contest! I have average/large hands and it fits me perfectly. I’m very confident it can handle any reasonable, tougher assignment that I give it. I got it on sale from KC at $20.00; what a great deal! Very happy customer!

Great EDC, If I had to use one word it would be solid. Just the right amount of weight, great action and easy to clean. AUS8 is a terrific steel that can be sharpened way easier than the super steels. Locks up like a vault door when open. This is a KC exclusive knife and the color and finish appear high end. Seriously, is way more knife than the money they are asking for. And yes, I finally understand what a lot of folks have been saying about the RAT. I will be getting more of both the RAT 1 and RAT 2 models. The only con I can find is weight but it really isn't heavy.

Understanding Achieved

I've been collecting for a little over a year now. At this point, I've aquired - I think I'm up to 62 blades now? Many of my selections have been based on good references from the knife community on YouTube. Popular reviewers Blade HQ, of course Knife Center, etc. I've been hearing about the RAT almost since I started. It's on a lot of top lists, you see it used as a comparison reference all the time, everybody seems to have one and swears by it. I couldn't understand why? Because I think it's hideous. Mainly just how the blade meets the handle at the pivot; but yeah, the weird profile ruins the aesthetic for me. So I never really wanted this knife, but when you offered it on-sale for around $20 ... I figured, "Sure. I can spare that to maybe see what all the hype is about." And I kinda get it now. Still ugly though.

There are always exceptions ...

This is my third Rat model 1, and I've had nothing but good experiences with the first two. The both get heavy use. So when the price lowered to under $25 at Knife Center, picking up another was a no-brainer. Out of the box all looked good. Those FRN scales are wonderful. Great weighting, and an excellent grind on the AUS-8 blade, which came very sharp. What is not so excellent on this example is the liner lock, which doesn't engage properly when opening one-handed. That can be dangerous. It will snap fully into place, but only with the additional leverage provided by a second hand, or a table. When comparing the knife with another RAT Model 1, I find the liner lock mechanism to be identical. And careful scrutiny reveals that the mechanism both knives is not quite as robust as it should be. One was made with more precision than the other, that's all. That precision is no doubt the norm. I never noticed a problem with the first two. Knife Center would process a return in a heartbeat, but it is still a very useful knife. I'll keep it, I just can't rave about it.
