Been looking to get an opinel for a while. I couldn't decide between the No 8 or No 9, Carbon or Stainless. The No 9 Multi-Function sold me due to the added features. The bits store securely in the handle to the point of having to tap the handle on something solid to loosen them up enough to get them out. When in use, the bits sit deeply in the end of the handle and don't seem like they would strip out easily. The blade came shaving sharp. I wish there was more of a point to it and have thought about switching the blade for one from another Opinel. That's a project for another day though.

I use this DIY knife as it was intended to be used and it excels in its intended role. As usual silly people complain about silly things with opinels. #Weak ringlock - an internet myth. Locks up solid with no blade play year after year. I cannot say that about any other knife I've ever owned regardless of price. # It's not sharp out of the box. Opinels must be the easiest production knife to sharpen, period;'so sharpen the d#mn thing! # Opening is not single handed. - Mine is! After 15min of calibrating I can open AND close it single handed faster than any of my other single handed knives. Don't believe me? Don't buy one. # They rust easy - Pffft. If they get wet, dry it! Common sense. I always carry carbon steel Opinel and I've never had one rust out because I USE it, and I live on the salty humid east coast of Australia. # They aren't great for battening - of course they're not! And who seriously battens with folding knives anyway? It's a stupid thing to do. As far as the DIY opinel goes, it does everything it was designed to do and it does it very well. As far as all Opinels go, they aren't for pretenders or mall ninjas. You won't get "it" until you've owned one.

I’ve only had a little bit but I’m surprised how much I like it. I’ve never had our own an Opinel until recently. I purchased this and three wood handled no 8’s. I do like the wood handled models but this feels better for outdoor usage. The bits are secure and the blade came sharp. The collar turns without any issues and it locks opened and closed without any issues. This just might replace over 30 Swiss army knife’s in my collection. The blade is a perfect shape and I can’t wait to take this hiking.

Blade not very sharp

The knife blade was not sharp. and the rear portion has an odd ridge just in front of the wire striper. That part of the blade was very dull. The front part could be sharpened ok but the rear 1/3 will require much attention before it is to my sharpness satisfaction.
