Opinel N09

Haven't own an opinel previously. Wanted one to try, as my. Grandfather and my dad had one in their shop all the time. Really a handy knife to keep with my shop tools, just remember to treat it to prevent rusting. Very handy shop knife

Been looking to get an opinel for a while. I couldn't decide between the No 8 or No 9, Carbon or Stainless. With the prices on here I was able to get one of each. The No 9 Carbon came shaving sharp. The locking collar was a little too tight but I was able to loosen it up with a pair of pliers.

Opinel No.9

Full disclosure, I just received this knife and have not used it yet, so this review will be limited. I intend to use this as a long-term EDC pocket knife, and not abuse it. The Good: -Excellent fit and finish -Good quality despite mass production -Acceptably sharp right out of the box -Easy to open -No wiggly or loose pieces -Overall a very lovely knife -No buyer's remorse whatsoever -Great value The Bad: -Final sharpening of the blade is slightly lackluster, but workable -Some very small reflections in the edge in places -Locking ring is slightly bent in one place, but does not impede functionality -One of the facets in the wooden handle is uneven, but that's just a nitpick The Ugly: -Knife arrived in a small plastic bag, not in a box from Opinel. Not bad, just strange. -The tip is concerningly thin. Not a bad thing necessarily, just something to be aware of. Not that one should be prying with the tip of a pocket knife anyway, I just think it would pay for it to be a little more robust. -Handle is varnished wood. This is not a bad thing, and is simply the choice of the manufacturer. However, I would suggest scraping off the varnish and applying boiled linseed oil to protect the handle from moisture, which would cause the wood to expand and possibly make the knife difficult to open, as well as potentially rust the blade. Overall, I give this knife 5 stars in terms of the quality, fit and finish and in terms of customer service. All negative qualities listed above are either subjective, unable to be easily controlled, or are simple for the buyer to correct on their own time. Either way, they don't leave a black mark on the excellent product received, or on the excellent service given.

Wonderful knife!

This is a great, high-quality knife at a very reasonable price. The locking mechanism is simple and effective. The blade is sharp, holds an edge well, and is easy to re-sharpen. The handle is comfortable. This knife is a great buy!

I have wanted one since the 80's

Glad I finally pulled the trigger and ordered one. Truly love everything about it, even though I don’t think much of the French. I don’t know how they do it for this money, twice the value.

Great Knife and Super customer Service!

Great knife, and the larger size gives me a better full-hand grip and mechanical advantage when slicing, for example, thick rope. Please convey my best regards to your customer service people. They're super-efficient, and just plain great. I had two glitches on this order. One of them was a failure to transfer funds to you from the throwaway debit card I used. Your e-mail thanked me for my order, but you never received the money. I checked my transaction record with the card issuer to confirm that when it seemed I had a larger balance than expected. The other glitch was a mistaken reply to an e-mail I sent asking about my order. That was before I realized you'd never received money from me at all. Your customer service folks straightened out both problems as expertly as I've ever experienced. I did receive my original order just a few days after talking to your people. They deserve major credit for keeping this customer's confidence.

Excellent Knife, Excellent Steel

I have used this knife as an EDC, while camping and for processing small game. Also have used it in kitchen as it can slice paper thin. The slightly clipped, 3.5 inch blade of 1095 carbon steel is flat ground can be sharpened to a razor edge and hold it for more than a reasonable time. I have the Opinel #8 and like it, but I find the larger handle of the #9 and larger blade suits me better. While I have folders made of various stainless, I much prefer 1095 and it's performance. This knife locks open and closed and is a simplistic, yet excellent slicer. I enjoy using this knife virtually everyday. Great price, great service, great knife.

Old school greatness

great knife, comes outta the box super sharp, extremely light heck i forget im carrying it, good locking mechanism secures blade tightly, the only problem I have found is that if you get the handle wet it will swell because its wood. What i'd like to call a gentleman's knife.

Great Knife, Great Price

I use this knife as a pocket knife for general use. I also use it for skinning game. The style and shape of the blade is perfect for skinning. It is a simple, and functional design, nothing fancy. They say that you get what you pay for, well, in this case you get way more than what it costs. The blade holds a good edge, yet when it does get dull, you can whip a new edge on it in short order. Hard to find carbon blades of this quality. I just love it, in fact I bought two. If you want a simple, functional, quality knife, then this is for you.
